Special Territorial Status and Extraterritoriality

Special Territorial Status and Extraterritoriality
20-24 January 2019
Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway
http://www.islanddynamics.org/extraterritoriality2019.html

This conference explores tangible consequences of territories subject to exceptional forms of governance or jursidiction: enclaves and exclaves, autonomous zones, reservations, reserves, domestic dependent sovereignties, export processing zones, sham federacies, subnational island jurisdictions, overseas territories, military installations, protectorates, realms, free-trade zones, and any other forms of specially designated territory, the status of which creates identifiable outcomes. These outcomes include (but are not limited to) territorially conditioned differentiations in: economic policies and practices; inward or outward migration; culture, language, and traditions; health; Indigenous self-determination; military alliances and installations; scientific and research practices; environmental issues; jurisdictional capacity; and diplomatic or paradiplomatic practices.

About Longyearbyen, Svalbard: Longyearbyen (population 2200) is the world's northernmost town, the main settlement in the vast Svalbard archipelago. Svalbard is under Norwegian jurisdiction and is administered by a Governor appointed by the Norwegian state. Nevertheless, the terms of the Svalbard Treaty (1920) have placed significant limits on Norway's ability to control immigration to and economic activity in this distant territory. Longyearbyen is home to residents of over 40 nationalities, Russia runs the mining town of Barentsburg, and the settlement at Ny-Ă…lesund hosts research stations from more than a dozen countries. The polar night, when the sun never breaches the horizon, lasts from late October until mid-February.

About the conference: Delegates will arrive in Longyearbyen on 20 January. On 21 and 24 January, delegates will take excursions out into Svalbard's spectacular arctic landscape: 1) a trip to an ice cave and 2) a trip out into the polar night by dog sled (the precise excursions are subject to weather). Conference presentations by delegates will be held on 22-23 January at Radisson Blu Polar Hotel Spitsbergen. Full registration covers five dinners and all conference activities.

How to make a presentation: This interdisciplinary conference welcomes presentations addressing any region of the world as well as innovative perspectives that highlight the complex intersections of multiple peoples, places, and polities. Presentations last 15 minutes and will be followed by around 5 minutes' question time. The deadline for abstracts is 30 June 2018. You can submit your abstract here: http://www.islanddynamics.org/extraterritoriality2019/cfp.html
The deadline for early registration is 31 July, and the final deadline registration 31 October.

The IAFOR International Conference on Global Studies (GLOBAL2018)

Dear Colleague,

The Early Bird Submission Deadline for The IAFOR International Conference on Global Studies (GLOBAL2018) is rapidly approaching. Submit your abstract by February 28, and join us July 13-15, in the amazing city of Barcelona, Spain for this exceptional event.

***Conference Theme: "Fearful Futures: Cultural Studies and the Question of Agency in the Twenty-First Century"

We have reached a moment in international history that is one of potential paradigm shift. It is a moment when a problematic, but at least blandly progressivist, pro-multiculturalist movement toward "cosmopolitanism" (as Kwame Anthony Appiah might use the term) is being threatened by a far more destructive and potentially genocidal ethno-nationalism, the ferocity of which is fuelled by economic disparity, religious intolerance and retrograde ideologies regarding gender, race and sexuality. The possible global futures we face are fearful, indeed.

In this context, cultural studies has a unique role to play in tracing the genealogy of the present moment and charting different paths forward. As never before, cultural studies is called to return to its activist roots, to diagnose the ideologies driving hatred and intolerance, and to posit different models of social engagement and organisation. Looking to the past, what do we learn about the challenges of today? How does culture replicate itself (or critically engage itself) in the classroom, in literature, in social media, in film, in the visual and theatrical arts, in the family, and among peer groups? How do we rise to the challenge of articulating a notion of human rights that also respects cultural difference? How do cultural representations of the environment abet or challenge the forces driving climate change? What are the roles and responsibilities of the individual activist as teacher, writer, social scientist and community member?

This international and interdisciplinary conference will bring together a range of academics, independent researchers, artists and activists to explore the challenges that we face in the twenty-first century. While we have every right to fear the future, we also have agency in creating that future. Can we commit to a cosmopolitanism that celebrates difference and that challenges social inequity? On our ability to answer to that question affirmatively likely hangs our very survival.

The organisers encourage submissions that approach the conference theme from a variety of perspectives. However, the submission of other topics for consideration is welcome and we also encourage sessions within and across a variety of interdisciplinary and theoretical perspectives.

This conference will be held in parallel to The IAFOR International Conference on the City 2018 (CITY2018). Registration for either of these conferences will allow participants to attend sessions in the other.

In conjunction with our Global Partners, including the University of Barcelona, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2018.

The conference lasts for three full days, from about 9 am until about 6 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The time frame for each paper is 30 min for the presentation itself + 20 min for discussion, 50 min in total, and with a 10 min break in between each paper. This is an interdisciplinary conference. Perspectives from different psychoanalytic schools will be most welcome. We promote discussion among the presenters and participants; the symposium series creates a space where representatives of different perspectives come together, engage with one another's contributions and participate in a community of thought. Therefore, attendance of the whole symposium is obligatory. Due to the nature of the forum audio recording is not permitted. This is a relatively small symposium where active participation is encouraged and an enjoyable social atmosphere is sought. A participation fee, which includes a shared dinner with wine, of € 299 before March 1st 2018 – € 377 between March 1st 2018 and April 10th 2018 – € 455 after April 10th, is to be paid before the symposium. Fees must be paid via Picatic. (Transaction fees are not included in the price).

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer travel grants or other forms of financial assistance for this event, though we will be able to assist you in finding affordable accommodation after February 1st... Please contact us if you wish to make a donation towards the conference. We thank all donors in advance! We would like to thank the Portuguese Psychoanalytical Society.

Islands, Resources, and Society: Sustainable Development under Globalization and Urbanization (ICUA 2018)

Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos 2018
Theme: Islands, Resources, Tourism, and Society: Sustainable Development under Globalization and Urbanization

26-29 September 2018, Zhoushan, China
http://www.islandcities.org/icua2018.html

This international, interdisciplinary conference brings together researchers from across the globe to explore the role of islands and archipelagos in our increasingly urbanized and globalized world.

Neil Brenner speaks of a 'planetary urbanization' that draws the entire world into urban processes. Islands are experiencing increasing flows of inward and outward migration, as residents come and go in search of skilled or unskilled work, education, higher quality of life, or simply new experiences. Mainland cities depend on the resource-rich waters, soils, wetlands, and associated ecosystem services of many island environments.

Island destinations for mass tourism, adventure tourism, nature tourism, and cultural tourism are producing specialized tourism landscapes and built environments. As the forces of 'development' make themselves felt in even the most remote island communities, modern cities are constructed on the basis of mainland capital and expertise. Some resource-rich or politically innovative islands serve as financial powerhouses in the globalized economy, projecting capital investment out from islands and into the wider world; conversely, other islands serve as tax havens, attracting and storing mainland wealth, sometimes with problematic results for local and overseas publics. Some formerly peripheral islands are even transforming into major urban centres, with diverse yet explosive development transforming today's Pearl River Delta and Ganges Delta regions at a speed and to an extent that dwarf even the fantastic growth of urban archipelagos within the Hudson River Estuary and the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt Delta in centuries past. Even in predominantly rural archipelagos, major population centres are increasingly important, as rising interconnectedness with the outside world enhances the roles of island towns and cities as transport hubs, administrative centres, and providers of urban services and functions. Yet at the same time as islands and islanders are gaining renewed significance, it is commonly held that islands are under increasing threat from global environmental and economic challenges. Some islands remain impoverished relative to more powerful mainland neighbours, and the alleviation of island inequalities is an important aspect of, for instance, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

This conference considers the roles and realities of islands in this age of globalization and urbanization as well as how we might envision sustainable island futures. What natural, social, political, financial, and human resources do islands contribute to global flows? Can an ecosystem services approach help us better value islands in the 21st Century, or should we seek to protect island peoples and environments from global markets? Can islands take on central roles in world systems without losing the insular characteristics that make them special? Can island cities simultaneously be global economic, political, and cultural leaders and contribute to local and global sustainability? Can small islands maintain local traditions in an age of global entertainment and cultural diffusion? Do resource-rich islands have a special responsibility to support wider sustainable development, or does the often-vulnerable nature of island communities justify islanders taking a locally oriented approach to sustainability?

Keynote speakers: Godfrey Baldacchino (University of Malta), Manulani Aluli Meyer (University of Hawaii, West Oahu), Luisa Del Giudice (Public Folklorist), Yue Wu (Zhejiang University), Stephen J. Walsh (University of North Caroline at Chapel Hill)

About Zhoushan: Zhoushan is China's largest coastal archipelago. The archipelago is regarded as peripheral and remote yet is just offshore from the major cities of Ningbo, Hangzhou, and Shanghai. On account of its spectacular scenery and sacred island of Putuoshan, Zhoushan has been a popular tourism destination for nature and religious tourism for centuries. Zhoushan is home to China's largest fishery, yet the islands have also become a major innovation and shipping hub, with the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan representing the busiest harbour in the world by tonnage. A place of beauty and dynamism, secluded isles and bustling cities, holy mountains and industrial parks, Zhoushan exemplifies the an archipelago in the globalized age.

About the conference: Conference presentations will be held at Zhejiang University's Ocean College on Zhoushan Island. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore the islands, including visits to the sacred Buddhist island of Putuoshan and Ocean College's own technological innovation island. Transport will be provided for foreign delegates to and from Pudong International Airport in Shanghai. The organisers will assist delegates with accommodation and visas.

How to make a presentation: Presentations are welcome on any aspect of urban island studies, but we especially invite presentation on the conference theme of 'Islands, Resources, and Society'. The deadline for abstracts is 28 February 2018. You can propose a presentation here: http://www.islandcities.org/icua2018/cfp.html
