***The 2016 conference theme

The City2016 conference theme is "The City: Site and History". Cities exist in both space and time. How have cities taken on their different shapes – residencies, commercial quarters, waves of settlement and expansion? Why have they taken on specific locations – riverside geographies, trade routes, fortification, population flows, religion, food, migration? How has their siting played into history, politics and culture?

We anticipate exciting interdisciplinary response from scholars and practitioners in the arts, humanities and (social) sciences, from artists and writers, to urban planners, designers, and futurists.

We welcome abstracts in the open call in the following sub-themes and academic (inter)disciplines:

The Smart City, The Future City and the Future of the City
The Built City & The Mapped City (Urban Planning, Architecture and Design)
Governing, Managing & Surveilling the City
Media and the City
Migration, Multiculturalism and the City
The Divided City
The City: Finance, Financing and Competition
Hospitality. Tourism and the City
The Sustainable City
Health and Wellbeing in the City
Educating the City
History and the City
City Voices & City Sounds (The Musical City)
The Artistic & Literary City
The Underground City: Night, Sex and Death

IAFOR looks forward to welcoming you to Barcelona, Spain.

Our conferences are meticulously planned and programmed under the direction of prominent academics to ensure that they offer programs of the highest level, and are also quite unique in the way in which they are supported by some of the world's leading academic institutions, including the University of London (UK), Virginia Tech (USA), Monash University (Australia), Barcelona University (Spain), Waseda University (Japan), the National Institute of Education (Singapore), and The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKSAR).

IAFOR's credibility has enabled it to become a genuine pioneer, and has grown to be the most respected and trusted organization encouraging international, intercultural and interdisciplinary study. The organization is a formative influence in providing new research avenues and visionary development solutions necessary in our rapidly emerging globalized world.
