CALL FOR CHAPTERS

LiHE 2016 Riga Latvia - Teaching and Learning Entrepreneurship in Higher Education - 9th to 13th October 2016.

Enquiries: info@lihe.info

Sponsored by: Stockholm School of Economics Riga & Institute for Learning in Higher Education

*****

Dear colleague,

At the Institute for Learning in Higher Education (LiHE), we are currently putting together an international anthology on TEACHING AND LEARNING ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN HIGHER EDUCATION for which we are seeking contributors.

The anthology will be finalised at our international symposium taking place in beautiful Riga, Latvia from October 9-13, 2016. There all authors will meet to finalise the manuscript for publication.

The deadline for chapter proposals is May 23,2016.

The deadline for full chapters is August 8, 2016.

We hope that you or some of your colleagues could have an interest in participating at the symposium and getting your research published worldwide by the British publishing house Libri Publishing Ltd., Oxfordshire.

Our symposiums are designed around the method of collaborative co-creation, which means that you will get stimulating collegial feedback and establish long lasting collegial friendships as you work on finalising the manuscript for publication. The LiHE-symposium is unlike any academic conference you have been to before. Here are no powerpoint presentations. And no traditional paper presentations. We work with the Socratian dialogue following the original Greek symposium format. All is done to further develop knowledge and improve our research output.

Why this anthology on Teaching and Learning Entrepreneurship?

For many years, there was a heated debate over whether or not entrepreneurship can be taught. "Entrepreneurs are born, not made!" was the logic. And consequently, entrepreneurship was often considered to be a topic unworthy of higher education. Viewed from the student perspective, the debate followed a similar logic— "Entrepreneurship is innate, not learned." was the nay-sayer's mantra. And likewise, the study of entrepreneurship was deemed a meaningless enterprise.

But the debate over whether or not entrepreneurship can be taught— whether or not it can be learned— has largely subsided. And higher education has embraced with fervour the teaching and learning of entrepreneurship. Witness, for example, the growth of entrepreneurship centres, new venture incubators, and business plan competitions on university campuses around the world. Note the way in which entrepreneurship now figures in discussions about the role of higher education, and the economic and social benefits of universities.

The moment is ripe, so it seems, to switch the debate from if to how. That is to say, the focus of attention ought to be redirected away from the legitimacy of entrepreneurship in higher education toward the efficacy of entrepreneurship in higher education.

For this anthology, therefore, the editors seek chapters which explore the teaching and learning of entrepreneurship, within the domain of higher education and with an emphasis on learning, as per the focus of LiHE. They welcome chapters from all scientific disciplines and which follow any methodological tradition.

The editors will be guided, however, by the two broad but interrelated perspectives of theory and practice:

Theory: Chapters which aim to improve our understanding of teaching and learning entrepreneurship.
Practice: Chapters which aim to improve the performance of teaching and learning of entrepreneurship

Any chapter, however, irrespective of the guiding perspective, must address entrepreneurship, learning, and higher education explicitly.

We hope this will have your interest, and we welcome you to submit your work on TEACHING AND LEARNING ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN HIGHER EDUCATION.

Yours sincerely
Rector Dr. Anders Paalzow, Rector, Stockholm School of Economics Riga
Professor Dr. John Branch, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Professor Dr. Paul Bartholomew, Aston University, Birmingham
Professor Dr. Claus Nygaard, Institute for Learning in Higher Education, Copenhagen

Local Sustainable Development and Global Challenges: Exploring Spaces and Scales of Sustainability

Conference call for papers
Local Sustainable Development and Global Challenges: Exploring Spaces and Scales of Sustainability
15-20 May 2017, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sakhalin, Russia
http://www.islanddynamics.org/sustainabilityconference.html

This international conference explores sustainable development initiatives at the local and regional levels and how these relate to national and global processes.

Although there is general support for the ideal of sustainability, visions of sustainable development can differ significantly at local, regional, national, and global scales. That which is good for the local community does not necessarily contribute to global sustainability, and global challenges such as climate change, falling biodiversity, and inequality of opportunity are not necessarily the most pressing concerns locally. How should community-level sustainable development initiatives be practiced, and who should practice them? To what degree should local and regional decision-makers prioritise the sustainability of their own communities? How can the often-competing needs of local and global, short-term and long-term social, economic, and environmental sustainability be balanced when a variety of governmental and non-governmental actors are involved in decision-making at a variety of levels? Should any particular space or scale for sustainable development be privileged over others? By exploring these and other questions, 'Local Sustainable Development and Global Challenges' will advance our understanding of sustainable development through an examination of what sustainability means in practice.

About Sakhalin.
Sakhalin (population 498,000) is the largest island in Russia, stretching 948 km through the Sea of Okhotsk. Sakhalin's regional capital and largest city is Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (population 189,000). Peripheral to Russia's centres of power, Sakhalin has been subject to settlement and colonisation by numerous peoples over the past millennia. Under Japanese colonialism in the first half of the 20th Century, large numbers of Korean workers were brought into southern half of the island, which retains a significant population of Sakhalin Koreans. This history of labour migration as well as regional and international engagement has continued with the flourishing of the Sakhalin's oil and gas industries in recent decades, transforming this remote and peripheral island into an important bastion of the Russian economy.

With its mountainous geography, rugged coasts, and deep forests, this sparsely populated island is a nature lover's paradise. Yet Sakhalin also raises difficult questions regarding sustainable development: How does the island's current oil boom relate to its own social, economic, and environmental sustainability? When a local economy is dominated by multinational business interests, how can local values be protected? And bearing in mind global concerns regarding climate change, can an economy based on extractive industries and fossil fuels ever be locally and regionally justified?

About the conference.
On 15-17 May, delegates will explore Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and its surrounding areas, visiting nature areas, industrial zones, cultural sites, local businesses, and government offices in order to understand the form that sustainable development might take in Sakhalin. Conference presentations will take place on 18-19 May at Sakhalin State University. On 20 May, delegates will have the opportunity to venture out into Sakhalin's wild nature.

This Island Dynamics conference is a collaboration with Sakhalin State University.

How to make a presentation.
Conference presentations will concern all aspects of social, economic, and environmental sustainability, with a focus on local and regional sustainable development initiatives and their interaction with global problems and values. Presentations can take the form of case studies, comparative research, or theoretical and review pieces. The conference is open to researchers, policymakers, NGO representatives, and community representatives from around the globe. You are also welcome to attend the conference without giving a presentation.

The deadline for abstracts is 31 July 2016, but to ensure that you have the opportunity to take part in the conference and have the time to seek funding from your institution or government, we recommend that you submit your abstract early: http://islanddynamics.org/sustainabilityconference/cfp.html

If you have any questions, feel free to contact conference convenor Adam Grydehøj at agrydehoj@islanddynamics.org.

***The 2016 conference theme

The City2016 conference theme is "The City: Site and History". Cities exist in both space and time. How have cities taken on their different shapes – residencies, commercial quarters, waves of settlement and expansion? Why have they taken on specific locations – riverside geographies, trade routes, fortification, population flows, religion, food, migration? How has their siting played into history, politics and culture?

We anticipate exciting interdisciplinary response from scholars and practitioners in the arts, humanities and (social) sciences, from artists and writers, to urban planners, designers, and futurists.

We welcome abstracts in the open call in the following sub-themes and academic (inter)disciplines:

The Smart City, The Future City and the Future of the City
The Built City & The Mapped City (Urban Planning, Architecture and Design)
Governing, Managing & Surveilling the City
Media and the City
Migration, Multiculturalism and the City
The Divided City
The City: Finance, Financing and Competition
Hospitality. Tourism and the City
The Sustainable City
Health and Wellbeing in the City
Educating the City
History and the City
City Voices & City Sounds (The Musical City)
The Artistic & Literary City
The Underground City: Night, Sex and Death

IAFOR looks forward to welcoming you to Barcelona, Spain.
