SPECIAL FOCUS: The Future of Museum Narratives
The pluralistic and inclusive positioning of museums pursued through the past two decades of activities by the Inclusive Museum Research Network are reflected in both the updated 'Museum' definition by ICOM (2022) and statements within the comprehensive UNESCO Recommendation on Museums (2015).
The world's constant state of flux is challenging museums to be relevant and reflexive in confronting contemporary realities. Intercultural and intergenerational dialogue are ongoing priorities as we face rising global tensions, escalating climate crisis and deepening social conflicts. Reconciliation and community building must continue to shape museum actions. In 2026, we will meet at the Chau Chak Wing Museum, University of Sydney, addressing many of these global challenges. The context of Sydney aptly provides one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse urban formations in the world.

ABOUT US
Founded in 2008, The Inclusive Museum Research Network is brought together by a shared concern for the future role of the museum and how it can become more inclusive. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. As a Research Network, we are defined by our scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions.
