Nordic-Baltic Maritime History

Nordic-Baltic Maritime History
11th to 14th January 2027
Helsingborg, Sweden

Nordic-Baltic Maritime History
Helsingborg, Sweden & Helsingør, Denmark, 11-14 January 2027
https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/nordicbalticmaritimehistory/

Theme
The Baltic and North Seas have long served as conduits of political power, cultural exchange, economic integration, and human mobility across Northern Europe. From the marine livelihoods of communities along the prehistoric coasts, to the maritime networks of the medieval period, to the highly industrialised shipping lanes of the modern era, the geography of the Nordic-Baltic region has continuously shaped human enterprise, geopolitics, and physical and institutional infrastructure. Maritime history continues being made, as cross-border economic regions, tourist imaginaries, security politics, and intangible cultural heritage imperatives continually create new visions of what the Nordic-Baltic maritime world was, is, and could be.

This international, interdisciplinary conference invites historians, archaeologists, geographers, literature studies researchers and others to investigate the empirical, material, and intangible histories of northern waters. We explore how state actors, commercial networks, and seafaring and coastal communities have navigated, regulated, and contested these maritime spaces.

The conference is held in tandem with the ‘Island Dynamics Blue Humanities Conference 2027: Oceanic Urbanisms’ (https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/bluehumanitiesconference-2027/). Delegates from one conference can attend the other, and delegates from both conferences can participate in two days of study trips and explorations in Helsingør and Helsingborg.

Abstract submission
If you wish to give a presentation at the conference, please submit your proposal via the abstract submission form:https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/abstractsubmission. Abstracts should be 150-200 words long and must not include citations or references. After submission, your proposal will be reviewed, and the organisers will respond with a decision as soon as possible. The earlier you submit your proposal, the earlier you will receive the decision. All presentations will be in English. The deadline for abstracts is 30 September 2026.

Conference location
The main conference location is Helsingborg, a small Swedish city on the Öresund, facing the Danish town of Helsingør across the strait. As both a border city and a port city, Helsingborg’s millennium-long history has been inseparable from the sea. Today, Helsingborg is striving to become a testbed for smart and sustainable urbanism—a laudable goal that nevertheless raises questions about the wider proliferation of role models of eco-urbanism and their complicated role in global systems of financial, racial, gender, epistemic, and other inequalities. The conference will begin with two days of local site visits. On 11 January, delegates will explore the Helsingborg’s terrestrial and marine cityscapes, from the medieval centre to the state-of-the-art harbour and port. On 12 January, delegates will take a ferry across the Öresund to Helsingør in Denmark, visiting the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, walking the grounds of the imposing Kronborg Castle, and experiencing the wider historic city. Conference presentations will be held on 13-14 January at Elite Hotel Marina Plaza.

Publication opportunity & free registration
This conference is organised in association with the peer reviewed, non-fee charging open access journal 'Blue Humanities' (https://bluehumanitiesjournal.org). Presenters are strongly encouraged to submit papers to the journal. When submitting, follow the instructions here. If you wish for your paper to be published in advance of the conference, the deadline for submissions is 31 August 2026. Although we strongly encourage article submissions, it is not necessary to submit a paper to the journal or to have a paper accepted for publication in order to participate in the conference. All submissions will undergo double-blind peer review and must follow the journal’s ordinary submission requirements. To learn more about journal publication, please contact Adam Grydehøj (agrydehoj@islanddynamics.org).

Authors who have had a paper accepted for publication to the journal in the 12 months prior to the conference can receive free full conference registration and accommodation during the conference upon request. If you have already paid the registration fee, this can be refunded to you. For multiauthored papers, this free registration is available to only one author.

Captivations: Animal Geographies in Literature, Film, Media, and Culture

Captivations: Animal Geographies in Literature, Film, Media, and Culture
4th to 7th October 2027
Odense, Denmark

Captivations: Animal Geographies in Literature, Film, Media, and Culture
4-7 October 2027
Odense, Denmark
https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/captivations/

Theme
How do the physical and conceptual spaces we construct for animals shape the boundaries of human identity, science, and culture? While cultural narratives frequently map human journeys across untamed landscapes, the containment, categorisation, and display of animal life—in literature, folklore, zoos, maps, film, cat cafés, and other spaces of representation—reveal a complex geography of cross-species encounter.

This interdisciplinary conference investigates the symbolic, historical, and material enclosures that define human-animal relationships. We invite scholars to explore how humans have mapped, captured, and recontextualised the natural world, analysing the structures—mental, material, architectural, conceptual—that position animals as threats, spectacles, miracles, masters, companions, and dependents. How are animals kept alien or made familiar in works of literature and film? What roles do animals play in the construction of cultural narratives concerning the place of humanity in the world and the fate of humanity in the future? How are certain animals used as symbolic of nature or the wider environment (the adorable but vulnerable panda, the noble polar bear in a melting world, the insatiably inhuman great white shark)? How are animals alternately domesticated or made wild by cultural practices such as taxidermy, museum and zoo display, and the production of children’s toys? The conference is interdisciplinary but may be especially interesting for researchers from literature studies, folklore studies, human geography, the environmental humanities, history, film studies, and anthropology.

The conference takes place in Odense Zoo: a philosophically and landscape architecturally innovative space that creates the ideal framing for explorations of the (at times trangressible) lines people draw between the human and the non-human.

The conference is held in tandem with the companion conference ‘Fairytale Geographies: Folklore, Setting, and the Supernatural’ (https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/fairytalegeographies/). Delegates from one conference can attend the other, and delegates from both conferences can participate in two days of fairytale study trips and explorations in Odense and Copenhagen.

Abstract submission
If you wish to give a presentation at the conference, please submit your proposal via the abstract submission form: https://islanddynamics.org/abstractsubmission. Abstracts should be 150-200 words long and must not include citations or references. After submission, your proposal will be reviewed, and the organisers will respond with a decision as soon as possible. The earlier you submit your proposal, the earlier you will receive the decision. All presentations will be in English. The first deadline for abstracts is 28 February 2027 (permitting early registration).

Schedule
3 October: Arrival in Odense
4-5 October: Conference presentations at Odense Zoo
6 October: Study trip in Odense, including visits to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and Hans Christian Andersen’s Childhood Home
7 October: Study trip in Copenhagen, including visit to Tivoli Gardens.

Publication opportunity & discount
This conference is organised in association with the peer reviewed, non-fee charging open access journal Folk, Knowledge, Place (https://folkknowledgeplace.org). Presenters are strongly encouraged to submit papers to the journal. When submitting, follow the instructions here. Although we strongly encourage article submissions, it is not necessary to submit a paper to the journal or to have a paper accepted for publication in order to participate in the conference. All submissions will undergo double-blind peer review and must follow the journal’s ordinary submission requirements. To learn more about journal publication, please contact co-Editor-in-Chief Adam Grydehøj (agrydehoj@islanddynamics.org).

Authors who have had a paper accepted for publication in the journal in the 12 months prior to the conference can register for the conference at half price (adjusted for each registration category) upon request. If you have already paid the registration fee, this portion of the registration fee can be refunded to you. For multiauthored papers, this discount is available to only one author.

Conference registration
In order to make the conference affordable to as many people as possible, we have created three registration packages:

Basic registration: Includes attendance at the conference presentations on 4-5 October. Includes all lunches and admission to Odense Zoo. Early registration fee: 700 Singapore Dollars.

Partial registration: Includes attendance at the conference presentations on 4-5 October and the Odense study trip on 6 October. Includes all lunches and admission to Odense Zoo, Hans Christian Andersen Museum, and Hans Christian Andersen’s Childhood Home. Early registration fee: 900 Singapore dollars.

Full registration: Includes attendance at the conference presentations on 4-5 October; the Odense study trip on 6 October; and the Copenhagen study trip on 7 October. Includes all lunches; Odense-Copenhagen train ticket; and admission to Odense Zoo, Hans Christian Andersen Museum, Hans Christian Andersen’s Childhood Home, and Tivoli Gardens. Early registration fee: 1100 Singapore dollars.

Registration does not include accommodation. The deadline for early registration form is 28 February 2027, after which fees on all registration categories will rise by 250 Singapore dollars. The final deadline for registration is 30 June 2027. To register, fill out the registration form here: https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/registration. Within the next day, you will be sent an invoice (payable by credit or debit card) using the information included in the registration form. Payment of the registration fee is due within 48 hours after you have received the invoice.

Travel and accommodation
The most convenient way of reaching Odense is to fly into Copenhagen or Billund in Denmark and then take the high-speed train. There are numerous hotels in Odense, but we recommend that delegates stay near Odense Station, from which it is a short walk to both the old medieval centre and train/bus connections to Odense Zoo. Milling Hotel Plaza is an option for those seeking a standard hotel experience, while Cabinn Odense offers tiny, basic rooms at a low price. For those following the conference to Copenhagen, we recommend a hotel near Tivoli Gardens and the Central station, such as ProfilHotels Copenhagen Plaza or the basic option of Cabinn City. The conference organisers can provide an invitation letter to be used for visa applications but can only do so after the registration fee has been paid.

Island Dynamics Blue Humanities Conference 2027: Oceanic Urbanism

Island Dynamics Blue Humanities Conference 2027: Oceanic Urbanism
11th to 14th January 2027
Helsingborg, Sweden

Call for papers
Island Dynamics Blue Humanities Conference 2027: Oceanic Urbanism
Helsingborg, Sweden and Helsingør, Denmark, 11-14 January 2027

Theme
As a multidisciplinary scholarly movement within the environmental humanities, the Blue Humanities explores the role of water spaces in forming, maintaining, and transforming human cultures and societies as well as takes humanities and social science approaches to the non-human aquatic world. The Blue Humanities encompasses research from such fields and disciplines as history, anthropology, cultural studies, maritime studies, human geography, literature studies, ecology, gender studies, Indigenous studies, im/migration studies, art history, and tourism studies.

Presentations at this conference are welcome on any topic within the Blue Humanities (past, present, or future). However, presenters are especially encouraged to address the special conference theme of oceanic urbanism: the ways in which human cities, settlements, technologies, and infrastructures interact with water systems and spaces (oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, bays, estuaries, glaciers, fog, etc.).

Throughout history, coastal cities, towns, and villages have been spaces of intensive interaction between humanity and the aquatic realm. Urban experiences with waters have shaped ways in which people perceive themselves, their culture, the city, nature, and the world as a whole. Human-water entanglements have inspired a myriad of artistic and cultural creations on the part of humans as well as urban adaptations on the part of non-human actors such as plants and animals. It is in urban spaces that the hard infrastructure of ports; harbours; and waterside residential, leisure, and commercial zones meets the ever-changing liquid environment. It is here that marine and riverine forces challenge the illusion of human control over nature and the hubris of imagining that any anthropogenic structure can ever be permanent or complete. Yet it is also here that people undertake both productive and extractive engagements with aquatic spaces in ways that profoundly influence human life, hydrological systems, and the ecosystems that depend upon them. Oceanic urbanism extends beyond coastal cities as discrete, primarily terrestrial units, encompassing offshore rigs, aquaculture facilities, dams, ships, undersea cables and pipelines, and other spaces that can be studied from an urban perspective.

Presentations may reference particular water bodies, sites, cities, infrastructures, or they may discuss the conference theme in general terms that are nevertheless situated within particular cultural frameworks and worldviews. The conference is open to all theoretical approaches. In line with Island Dynamics' wider philosophy, we take a pluriversal perspective that insists upon epistemic diversity and distinct ways of knowing and acting within the world.

Min Zhou (Professor at Hangzhou Normal University's Center for Caribbean Studies and co-Editor-in-Chief of Blue Humanities) and Søren Frank (Professor at University of Copenhagen's Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics) will serve as keynote speakers.

Fairytale Geographies: Folklore, Setting, and the Supernatural

Fairytale Geographies: Folklore, Setting, and the Supernatural
4th to 7th October 2027
Odense, Denmark

Fairytale Geographies: Folklore, Setting, and the Supernatural
4-7 October 2027, Odense and Copenhagen, Denmark
https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/fairytalegeographies/

Folktales and fairytales (broadly defined) are often studied in terms of their plots, motifs, themes, characters, and social meanings. Less attention is paid to the settings in which they occur. Yet setting is not a passive backdrop in traditional oral and literary written narratives. It is a dynamic force that shapes character, drives plot, and bridges the gap between the mundane and the miraculous.

From the depths of the Central European forests, to the bottom of the sea; from the liminal spaces of bogs, crossroads, and seashores, to haunted mansions and gingerbread houses; from bustling city streets, to the mundanity of the farmhouse; from the lofty halls of Heaven to the gloom of the Underworld, the geography of the fairytale is always alive with meaning.

This conference explores how landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, and other geographies function within traditional narratives. Tradition is not something of the past; it exists in the present and influences the creation and recreation of fairytales and folktales today. The conference is thus not limited to discussions of narratives recorded or written by folklorists, authors, literati, or antiquarians in previous centuries. It also encompasses tales that proliferate as texts and videos across social media, internet streaming services, and in movie theatres as well as those that are continually reinvented by new authors for new audiences and published in traditional print media. Still-emergent forms such as serialised internet fiction and ultrashort video dramas represent frontiers of traditional narrative.

At this international academic conference, we invite submissions to explore this neglected aspect of fairytales and folktales. The conference takes place in the Danish city of Odense, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, the world's most celebrated fairytale author. The conference proper will be held in the fantastic setting of Odense Zoo, followed by two days of fairytale study trips and explorations in Odense and Copenhagen.

Presentations are sought concerning tales from around the world. The conference is interdisciplinary but may be especially interesting for researchers from folklore studies, human geography, literature studies, history, and anthropology. Potential perspectives include:
- how settings afford or do not afford certain tale types and motifs
- how settings reflect or interact with cultural, social, economic, political, and environmental hopes and fears
- lost or understudied topographies of the past, real or imagined
- how specific historical events (extreme weather, epidemic, colonial incursions) altered the physical settings of classic tale types
- how classic illustrated print editions of other artworks of literary fairy tales contributed to the construction of stereotypical fairytale landscapes
- how tale settings establish (or break down) physical and moral boundaries between the domestic sphere and the wild
- similarities and differences between the settings of tales in oral, literary, and video forms and across different media

If you wish to give a presentation at the conference, please submit your proposal via the abstract submission form: https://islanddynamics.org/abstractsubmission

6 October: Study trip in Odense, including visits to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and Hans Christian Andersen's Childhood Home
7 October: Study trip in Copenhagen, including visit to Tivoli Gardens.

Publication opportunity and discount
This conference is organised in association with the peer reviewed, non-fee charging open access journal Folk, Knowledge, Place (https://folkknowledgeplace.org). Presenters are strongly encouraged to submit papers to the journal. When submitting, follow the instructions here: https://folkknowledgeplace.org/for-authors
If you wish for your paper to be published in advance of the conference, the first deadline for submissions is 31 January 2027 (permitting for early registration). Although we strongly encourage article submissions, it is not necessary to submit a paper to the journal or to have a paper accepted for publication in order to participate in the conference. All submissions will undergo double-blind peer review and must follow the journal's ordinary submission requirements.

For multi-authored papers, this discount is available to only one author.

Includes all lunches and admission to Odense Zoo, Hans Christian Andersen Museum, and Hans Christian Andersen's Childhood Home. Early registration fee: 900 Singapore dollars.

Full registration: Includes attendance at the conference presentations on 4-5 October; the Odense study trip on 6 October; and the Copenhagen study trip on 7 October. Includes all lunches; Odense-Copenhagen train ticket; and admission to Odense Zoo, Hans Christian Andersen Museum, Hans Christian Andersen's Childhood Home, and Tivoli Gardens. Early registration fee: 1100 Singapore dollars.

Registration does not include accommodation. The deadline for filling out the early registration form is 28 February 2027, after which fees on all registration categories will rise by 250 Singapore dollars. The final deadline for registration is 31 May 2027. To register, fill out the registration form here: https://islanddynamics.org/conferences/registration
Within the following few days, you will be sent an invoice (payable by credit or debit card) using the information included in the registration form. Payment of the registration fee is due within one month after you have received the invoice.

Call for Presentations:

The London Arts-Based Research Centre is delighted to announce the upcoming Eco-Poetics and Environmental Artivism hybrid conference in London, taking place at Pembroke Lodge in the iconic Richmond Park on July 16, 2026 (as well as fully online on July 17).

Richmond Park, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a National Nature Reserve (NNR), due to its rich biodiversity and important habitats, offers an immersive experience to the conference theme, which aims to explore the intersections between creativity, ecology, and environmental activism. Environmental aesthetics in different art forms such as poetry, writing, painting, photography, fashion and fabrics, sculpture, drama, dance, film and music play significant roles in shaping our aesthetic appreciation of the natural world around and within us.

We seek to bring together scholars, creatives, and arts-based researchers to discuss a wide array of topics on ecopoetics and various kinds of eco-aesthetics while looking at recent trends and innovations in the creative field, as well as the future directions of eco-creativity.

Ecopoetics, as well as other types of environmental artivism, attempts to locate us - humans - in the world, with the intention of focusing on ecology (from Greek oikos, or "home" and logos, or "reason"). So environmental aesthetics contemplate the way we exist within this oikos and how this "home" is perceived; they also navigate the borders between human and non-human nature, and how images, places, spaces and memories assist our desire to explore the self in the world.

Ecopoetry and environmental artivism in general, therefore, view humanity's relationship with the planet, instead of merely focusing on the unfolding scenes of nature through different modes of art; thus, they highlight the complexities of our interrelationships within and our responsibilities toward our environment.

We welcome proposals from scholars, poets, activists and creatives from diverse backgrounds and disciplines (including literary studies, cultural studies, philosophy, environmental studies, and creative writing) whose work engages with ecological themes and environmental concerns in creative expression.

We invite proposals for 15-minute academic or creative presentations that engage with (but are not limited to) the following topics:

- Arts-based research projects and methods in environmental studies
- Ecological imagination and poetic language
- Poetry and environmental justice
- The role of poetry and other forms of art in environmental activism
- The representation of nature and the non-human in creativity
- Ecopoetry and the Anthropocene
- Ecofeminism and poetry
- Eco-poetics and eco-criticism
- Environmental ethics and poetic practice
- The symbolism of water in creative works and/or religion
- Environmental symbolism in myths and folktales
- Creative depictions of nature as sacred
- Nature and photography
- Wildlife in docuseries and film
- Sustainable fashion and innovations in synthetic material
- Future directions in environmental aesthetics
- Ecopoetics and language
- Ecofeminist perspectives in the visual and performing arts
- Utopian/dystopian depictions of nature in literature and film
- Environmentalism in music
- Environmental photography
- The impact of the environment on creative thinking
- Creative technology for environmental art (eg: astrophotography, fashion, digital art)
- Environment-friendly innovations in the culinary arts
- Modernist and post-modernist ecology in literature and visual art

Presenters may share academic papers and/or creative work (poetry, prose, photography, music, painting, etc.), as we highly encourage arts-based research, as well as research which stimulates reflection on creativity, image, symbol and archetype. Please fill out our proposal form on https://forms.gle/d3TcQrJCxmpHR8kZA, by March 22, 2026. We will be announcing our plenary speakers and the full programme of the conference will be ready after the presenters are selected.
