SPECIAL FOCUS: The Image as Advocate: Shaping Cultural Conversations
This year's special focus examines how visual media serve as agents of cultural dialogue, activism, and change, particularly within complex and pluralistic societies. Images do more than reflect the world; they intervene in it. Whether mobilised to document injustice, amplify marginalised voices, reframe dominant narratives, or inspire solidarity, images hold or possess the capacity to advocate. As technologies evolve and the circulation of images intensifies, so too does the need to critically assess how they shape public consciousness and cultural meaning. This conference invites an exploration of how visual forms, across analogue, digital, and emerging mediums, operate as tools of advocacy within their own cultural contexts and in dialogue with others, placing an emphasis on practices that are situated, responsive, and ethically engaged. We ask: What are the possibilities and limits of the image as advocate? How does visual advocacy operate across linguistic, societal and cultural thresholds? And what pedagogies, platforms, or ethics are needed to support such work? In gathering diverse voices, we aim to cultivate a conversation on how images not only represent but also actively shape the cultures from which they emerge.

SPECIAL FOCUS: The Future of Museum Narratives
The pluralistic and inclusive positioning of museums pursued through the past two decades of activities by the Inclusive Museum Research Network are reflected in both the updated 'Museum' definition by ICOM (2022) and statements within the comprehensive UNESCO Recommendation on Museums (2015).
The world's constant state of flux is challenging museums to be relevant and reflexive in confronting contemporary realities. Intercultural and intergenerational dialogue are ongoing priorities as we face rising global tensions, escalating climate crisis and deepening social conflicts. Reconciliation and community building must continue to shape museum actions. In 2026, we will meet at the Chau Chak Wing Museum, University of Sydney, addressing many of these global challenges. The context of Sydney aptly provides one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse urban formations in the world.

Strangeness and Oddity: Embracing the Extraordinary in Arts-Based Research (A Transdisciplinary Conference)

Strangeness and Oddity: Embracing the Extraordinary in Arts-Based Research (A Transdisciplinary Conference)
10th to 11th March 2026
Online

A conference where curiosity meets creativity and the bizarre becomes a gateway to profound insights. We aim to take a deep dive into the world of strangeness and oddity within arts-based research.

Call for Papers:

"Blessed are the weird people - poets, misfits, writers, mystics, painters and troubadours - for they teach us to see the world through different eyes" - Jacob Nordby

What happens when we look beyond the ordinary? Can the strange and the peculiar hold the key to deeper truths about our world and ourselves? In what ways does the "bizarre" serve as a mirror for societal norms, fears, and desires?

Throughout history, the extraordinary has often been misunderstood - yet it has also been the birthplace of revolutions in thought and creativity. From the surrealists who redefined art and consciousness to the pioneers of experimental media who dared to imagine new forms of expression, the extraordinary has consistently shaped and reshaped our cultural landscapes. So in the creative arts, the strange and the odd invite us to question, provoke, and transcend. These are the catalysts for unique insights and innovations that inspire new perspectives.

At "Strangeness and Oddity: Embracing the Extraordinary in Arts-Based Research", we celebrate this legacy of bold exploration and invite you to contribute to it. This transdisciplinary conference challenges you to journey into the unknown, where curiosity meets creativity and the bizarre becomes a gateway to profound insights. We aim to take a deep dive into the world of strangeness and oddity within arts-based research. We seek to unravel the enigma of the unusual, celebrate the beauty in the bizarre, and draw inspiration from the mysterious and the unconventional.

We invite scholars, creatives, and anyone passionate about the intersection of creativity, research, and the unusual to share their ideas and collectively push the boundaries of what arts-based research can achieve. Whether you're a seasoned researcher or a visionary creative, your work in progress, case studies, or theoretical explorations are welcome to at this online event, which promises to be a transformative exploration of the unconventional, the unexpected, and the extraordinary in arts-based research!

Key Conference Topics: We encourage 15-minute presentations on a wide range of topics that embrace strangeness and oddity in arts-based research, including but not limited to:

- Eccentric Methodologies: Unconventional research approaches and techniques that challenge traditional norms.
- Avant-Garde Artistry: How strange and odd art forms can act as a medium for critical exploration and expression.
- Bizarre Narratives: Unearthing narratives that defy conventional storytelling, and the implications for understanding complex phenomena.
- Experiments in Expression: How the peculiar and the unusual in artistic endeavours can lead to novel insights and connections.
- The Supernatural and the Surreal: Exploring the uncanny, the supernatural, and surrealism within the arts.
- Provocative Visualizations: Visual arts, photography, and multimedia presentations that push the boundaries of perception and understanding.
- Psychology of the Unusual: How the strange and uncanny provoke emotional responses, expand cognitive boundaries, and offer insights into human behavior and mental processes.
- The Politics of Peculiarity: Investigating how the unconventional challenges societal norms, critiques political structures, and fosters alternative visions for the future.
- The Shadow and the Self: Exploring Jungian archetypes, the shadow, and other psychological constructs through artistic representations of the strange and extraordinary.
- Subversive Aesthetics: Examining how art deemed "odd" or "bizarre" can disrupt power structures, foster resistance, and challenge cultural hegemony.
- Dreamscapes and the Unconscious: Using arts-based research to explore the rich terrain of dreams, fantasy, and the unconscious mind.
- Radical Storytelling: The use of unconventional narrative techniques to amplify marginalized voices or tell stories that conventional methods fail to capture.
- Art and Activism through Strangeness: How surrealism, absurdism, and avant-garde practices inspire social and political change.
- The Ethics of the Unusual: Ethical considerations in creating and interpreting art that intentionally disturbs or challenges audiences.
- Embodied Oddity: Investigating how the physical body and performance art can convey the peculiar and provoke deeper connections with viewers.
- Temporal Anomalies in Art: Artistic explorations of time, non-linear storytelling, and how the strange distorts our perception of temporal flow.
- Myth, Ritual, and the Peculiar: Revitalizing ancient myths and rituals through the lens of arts-based research to reinterpret their relevance in contemporary contexts.
- The Absurd in Everyday Life: Artistic reflections on absurdity as a response to contemporary existential, societal, or political challenges.
- The Margins of Creativity: Celebrating outsider art, naive art, and other forms of creativity that defy categorization within traditional artistic norms.
- Digital Peculiarities: Examining how technology, virtual reality, and AI contribute to new forms of creative oddity and artistic disruption.

Ever since the dawn of time, there has been an art-based approach to spirituality. People have created and developed ritualistic relationships with artefacts in order to help them understand, express, and communicate with the divine. From jewellery to iconography, music, garments, sculptures, architecture, incense, and more, these objects of art have encapsulated and preserved religious symbols and traditions over many generations.

This conference aims to bring together researchers, postgraduate students, and creatives interested in the role that religious artefacts and rituals can play in our perception of the sacred. In this transdisciplinary forum, we will be sharing ideas relating to all aspects of art and the divine, especially regarding matter, materials, and materiality in religious cultures throughout the ages. Art is associated with religious traditions around the world, and sacred objects/artefacts (such as icons,
sculptures, jewellery, garments, architecture, etc.) have the capacity to depict and describe archetypal, spiritual concepts and religious content through matter. We would like to explore topics revolving around the connection between religions and material culture, especially in observing the relationships between people and sacred artefacts, whether these relationships are of spiritual, informative, creative, scientific or ekphrastic nature.

We would like to explore the following questions: How can religious artefacts shape our
understanding of the divine? What type of ekphrastic responses may be generated between
different mediums of religious art? What factors come into play in the making and development of iconography and other art of religious significance? How can archaeological findings tell us more about the history of the sacred in our psyche?

We welcome 15-minute presentations of either academic or creative form.

Central topics include, but are not limited to:

- Iconography: process, meaning, making, and using
- Calligraphy
- Ekphrastic responses to sacred art (such as icons)
- Art-based rituals in spiritual practice
- Cross-cultural interactions and influences
- Archaeological discoveries through these artefacts
- Modes of interaction between different cultures/faiths in the creation and use of artefacts with religious significance
- Spiritual architecture
- Special processes and techniques in iconography
- Renovation of artefacts
- Sacred music
- Food in religious practice
- Religious sculpture
- Classicism and neo-classicist approaches to religion through art
- The Renaissance
- Religious symbols in art of ancient civilizations
- The contemporary use of ancient religious symbols in art, fashion, and rituals
- Comparative religion
- Religious manuscripts
- Interdisciplinary conversations
- Consciousness and the imaginal realm
- Archetypal expressions
- Spiritual symbolism
- Mythology as methodology
- Alchemical symbolism

Held at the University of Oxford (as well as online), this two-day hybrid conference will take place on 16-17 May, 2026.

Presenters may either share academic papers and/or creative work (poetry, prose, photography, music, painting, etc.), as we highly encourage arts-based research, as well as research which stimulates reflection on creativity, image, symbol and archetype. Please fill out our proposal form on https://forms.gle/Go8CULxEBW15iUbd7 by March 16, 2026. We will be announcing our plenary speakers and the full programme of the conference will be ready after the presenters are selected.

We look forward to receiving your abstracts!

Eco-Poetics and Environmental Artivism A Transdisciplinary Conference (July 18-19, 2026)

Eco-Poetics and Environmental Artivism A Transdisciplinary Conference (July 18-19, 2026)
18th to 19th July 2026
London, United Kingdom

£180 (In person participation)
£100 (Online participation)

Call for Presentations:

The London Arts-Based Research Centre is delighted to announce the upcoming Eco-Poetics and Environmental Artivism hybrid conference in London, taking place at Pembroke Lodge in the iconic Richmond Park on July 18, 2026 (as well as fully online on July 19).

Richmond Park, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a National Nature Reserve (NNR), due to its rich biodiversity and important habitats, offers an immersive experience to the conference theme, which aims to explore the intersections between creativity, ecology, and environmental activism. Environmental aesthetics in different art forms such as poetry, writing, painting, photography, fashion and fabrics, sculpture, drama, dance, film and music play significant roles in shaping our aesthetic appreciation of the natural world around and within us.

We seek to bring together scholars, creatives, and arts-based researchers to discuss a wide array of topics on ecopoetics and various kinds of eco-aesthetics while looking at recent trends and innovations in the creative field, as well as the future directions of eco-creativity.

Ecopoetics, as well as other types of environmental artivism, attempts to locate us - humans - in the world, with the intention of focusing on ecology (from Greek oikos, or "home" and logos, or "reason"). So environmental aesthetics contemplate the way we exist within this oikos and how this "home" is perceived; they also navigate the borders between human and non-human nature, and how images, places, spaces and memories assist our desire to explore the self in the world.
Ecopoetry and environmental artivism in general, therefore, view humanity's relationship with the planet, instead of merely focusing on the unfolding scenes of nature through different modes of art; thus, they highlight the complexities of our interrelationships within and our responsibilities toward our environment.

We welcome proposals from scholars, poets, activists and creatives from diverse backgrounds and disciplines (including literary studies, cultural studies, philosophy, environmental studies, and creative writing) whose work engages with ecological themes and environmental concerns in creative expression.

We invite proposals for 15-minute academic or creative presentations that engage with (but are not limited to) the following topics:

- Arts-based research projects and methods in environmental studies
- Ecological imagination and poetic language
- Poetry and environmental justice
- The role of poetry and other forms of art in environmental activism
- The representation of nature and the non-human in creativity
- Ecopoetry and the Anthropocene
- Ecofeminism and poetry
- Eco-poetics and eco-criticism
- Environmental ethics and poetic practice
- The symbolism of water in creative works and/or religion
- Environmental symbolism in myths and folktales
- Creative depictions of nature as sacred
- Nature and photography
- Wildlife in docuseries and film
- Sustainable fashion and innovations in synthetic material
- Future directions in environmental aesthetics
- Ecopoetics and language
- Ecofeminist perspectives in the visual and performing arts
- Utopian/dystopian depictions of nature in literature and film
- Environmentalism in music
- Environmental photography
- The impact of the environment on creative thinking
- Creative technology for environmental art (eg: astrophotography, fashion, digital art)
- Environment-friendly innovations in the culinary arts
- Modernist and post-modernist ecology in literature and visual art

Presenters may share academic papers and/or creative work (poetry, prose, photography, music, painting, etc.), as we highly encourage arts-based research, as well as research which stimulates reflection on creativity, image, symbol and archetype. Please fill out our proposal form on https://forms.gle/d3TcQrJCxmpHR8kZA, by March 22, 2026. We will be announcing our plenary speakers and the full programme of the conference will be ready after the presenters are selected.

Art, Tradition, Environment: Folklore in place

Art, Tradition, Environment: Folklore in place
13th to 18th September 2026
Xining & Rebgong, Qinghai, China

Conference call for papers: 'Art, tradition, environment: Folklore in place'
13-18 September 2026, Rebgong/Tongren, Qinghai, China

Theme:
Museums are often seen as the place for art. From so-called 'high art' to 'folk art', it remains common to exhibit and interpret artworks in isolation from the environmental and often cultural contexts in which they were created. Even the concept of Intangible Cultural Heritage, by building upon a sense of world heritage, suggests the possibility of appreciating art out of place.

This small academic conference explores the mutual importance of (1) place and (2) the creation of art and the maintenance of artistic traditions. We emphasise aesthetic practices as a product of interactions between culture and environment, which give rise to localised traditions. How does the natural environment influence culture and, as a result, art? How do artistic traditions contribute to the construction of cultural landscapes by inspiring alterations to and re-envisionings of the natural environment? How do geographical factors (e.g. climate, availability of natural materials, location relative to other cultural communities) impact the ways in which people create art? How is art practiced, displayed, and engaged with in place-sensitive ways both inside and outside museums.

The conference takes a broad definition of 'art' and considers all kinds of art genres from around the world, though it is expected that most presentations will concern visual arts. Of special interest are presentations concerning folk culture, vernacular traditions, and art that forms a part of a community's daily life or spiritual practices. The conference mixes scholarly presentations, discussions, and field trips. All presentations must reflect upon the connection between art and place as well as the situatedness of art within cultural traditions. The conference will occur in close engagement and collaboration with Qinghai's Tibetan scholars, artists, tradition bearers, and communities.

Maria Fabricius Hansen (University of Copenhagen) and Sally Pirie (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) will serve as plenary speakers.

Conference locations:
Conference presentations will be held at the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum in Xining, the multiethnic capital of Qinghai Province in Northwest China. The Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum preserves, communicates, and promotes the cultural heritage of the Tibetan people, one of China's 56 recognised ethnicities. Delegates will also have the opportunity to explore the markets and alleys of the old city, which is strongly influenced by Hui Muslim culture, as well as to visit the mountainside Tulou Daoist temple. Following the presentation days, we will have a study fieldtrip to the small town of Rebgong (Tongren in Mandarin), situated in a mountain valley on the banks of the Yellow River. Rebgong grew up around a number of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, including Rongwo Monastery (founded 1341) and Wutun Monastery (founded 1385). Rebgong's various monastic and village communities ultimately developed distinct artistic traditions within such fields as thangka painting, architecture, sculpture (in wood, clay, yak butter), and embroidery. In 2009, these so-called Regong Arts were added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. During the fieldtrip, delegates will visit various of Rebgong's nature, cultural, and religious sites, including its famous monasteries, villages, and art schools.

Because the conference takes place in remote areas of China, delegates should be prepared to stay at local (non-luxury) hotels and to eat local Tibetan and Hui Muslim food throughout the conference.

Schedule:
13 September 2026: Delegates arrive in Xining.
14-15 September 2026: Conference presentations, visits to Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum exhibits, and explorations around Xining.
16-17 September 2026: Group travels to and explores Rebgong.
18 September 2026: Group returns to Xining in the early afternoon, and the conference concludes.

Abstract submission:
If you wish to give a presentation at the conference, please submit your proposal via the abstract submission form:

Abstracts should be 150-200 words long and must not include citations or references. After submission, your proposal will be reviewed, and the organisers will respond with a decision as soon as possible. The earlier you submit your proposal, the earlier you will receive the decision. All presentations will be in English. The final deadline for abstracts is 28 February 2026.

Publication opportunity:
This conference is hosted by the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum, sponsored by South China University of Technology's School of Foreign Languages, and organised in association with Island Dynamics (Beewolf Press). Presenters are strongly encouraged to submit papers for consideration for a special section of the peer reviewed, non-fee charging open access journal 'Folk, Knowledge, Place' (https://folkknowledgeplace.org) on the theme of 'Art, tradition, environment'. Papers will need to match the journal's theme and scope. The deadline for special section article submissions is 31 May 2026. The aim is to allow papers that successfully pass peer review to be published in advance of the conference itself. Although we strongly encourage article submissions, it is not necessary to submit a paper to the journal or to have a paper accepted for publication in order to participate in the conference. To learn more about journal publication, please contact co-editor-in-chief Adam Grydehøj:
