The Asian Conference on the Social Sciences (ACSS2018)

Dear Colleague,

The Early Bird Submission Deadline is approaching. On behalf of the ACSS2018 Organising Committee and the International Academic Forum, we invite you to submit your abstract to The Asian Conference on the Social Sciences, to be held June 8-10, 2018. Submit your abstract by January 19 and you'll be eligible for Early Bird Registration discount.

***Conference Theme: "Surviving and Thriving: In Pursuit of a Sustainable World"

Religious, cultural and societal fractures have seen rises in authoritarianism and nationalism across the world, and threats and perceived threats have been used to justify the stifling and marginalisation of voices of opposition and dissent. Hard-won progress and freedoms are being questioned and undermined, and questions of peace, security and human security abound. In this period of great global social, economic, political and environmental instability, the future is for many a place of great uncertainty and fear.

However, in any period of great change, and undoubted challenge, there is also a great opportunity to harness and nurture these forces. The future is not yet written, and the powerful heuristic of sustainability has become a reality in many areas, where human creativity, imagination and technological advances have helped to make the world a better place. From small individual initiatives within families, communities and places of work, to the larger and more long-term development initiatives of governments and supranational institutions, exemplified by the UN's 2030 goals, human resourcefulness is being used in pursuit of the common goal of a sustainable world.

The Asian Conference on the Social Sciences 2018 (ACSS2018) is a multidisciplinary conference held concurrently with The Asian Conference on Sustainability, Energy & the Environment (ACSEE2018) and The Asian Conference on Aging & Gerontology (AGen2018). Sexual Citizenship: 1st Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Sexual Citizenship: 1st Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference
Monday 23rd July to Tuesday 24th July 2018
Prague, Czech Republic

Exploring the relationship between sexuality and personhood, this project seeks to understand how sex and sexuality shape citizenship, belonging, identity, and expression. Embracing an ethos of cultural humility, we wish to explore how sexual citizenship manifests organically within and across communities and cultures.

Sexual citizenship is often constructed in ways that enforce inequities in access, disparities in full social and political participation, and hierarchies of belonging and non-belonging. The concept of citizenship is fraught with complication. How does citizenship relate to, or reject, notions of nationalism, patriotism, and hyperpatriotism? What is the relationship between citizenship and belonging? Who has access to citizenship, and how can citizenship be conceived in ways that transcend counties, states, provinces, and nations? Does sexual citizenship equate to homonationalism, or can it deconstruct and complicate loyalties specific to place and state? If citizenship serves to perpetuate binaries of inclusion and exclusion, can sexual citizenship nevertheless be a useful framework? The project looks beyond sexuality as simple desire and seeks to explore how sexuality and sexual citizenship shape political, social, and cultural engagement and research across a wide variety of contexts and disciplines.

Our first interdisciplinary conference on Sexual Citizenship seeks to form connections across professions and communities to discuss and explore research and activity on this theme, to identify areas to be subsequently explored in further depth, and to generate collaborative action that will lead to change in the inequitable ways that sexual citizenship is constructed, enforced, and maintained. While we welcome traditional papers, we would also like to solicit applied and multimodal expressions of research and engagement with sexualities topics. To that end we are particularly interested in panels or roundtables, seminars, workshop proposals, performances, policy brainstorming sessions, art exhibits and other forms of expression – recognising that different disciplines express themselves in different mediums and that different cultures have different ways of knowing. We seek submissions exploring any of the following themes:

1. Community Activism and Grassroots Organising in Marginalised Sexuality Communities
We are particularly interested in workshops on do-it-yourself activism, forming activist collectives, and case studies of successful and unsuccessful activist endeavours; activism promoting harm reduction; sexuality inclusive anti-racist practice; inequity, power relations, and sexual citizenship; homelessness and sexuality, particularly as it relates to citizenship and belonging; sexual freedom, personhood, resistance, and rebellion; sexual activism in an age of political apathy; activism, NGOs, and/or voluntary sector work addressing queer intimate partner violence; activism to rethink law and policy including:

~ laws governing sexuality at local, state/province, regional, and national levels; policies regulating sexuality within institutions and workplaces;
~ laws governing citizenship, immigration, and detention, and their relationships to sexuality

2. Sexual Citizenship and Belonging
Modern sexual ethics, including non-monogamous ethics; marriage and the sexual politics of assimilation/accommodation; immigration, migration, and sexual citizenship; intersex and transgender sexual citizenship; asexual citizenship in a predominantly sexual world; bi-erasure; sexual citizenship for religious figures/clergy; the heretical and the sacred and their place in desire; nameless, unlabellable sexualities and relationships; theories of sexuality such as queer, crip, affect, social constructionism, etc.; disability and sexuality; race, ethnicity, and sexuality; the politics of pride and queer visibility, particularly as a Western strategy of citizenship and belonging, and the rejection or critique of coming out; sexual expression in various global contexts; unnamed and unspoken sexualities and sexual encounters; citizenship within queer time and space; subcultural citizenship

3. Artistic, Narrative, and Performative Depictions of Sexuality
We are particularly interested in projects that explore sexuality and sexual citizenship through art, artistic creation, and narratives. Potential mediums include:

~ narrative and/or oral history workshops focused on sexual storytelling (as sexual minority communities are frequently collectivists and collectivist communities often communicate through storytelling); theatrical or performative depictions of sexuality; narrative or poetry readings or performances; visual and aesthetic art; workshops on creating, or presentation of existing, zines or chapbooks

4. Negotiating Sexuality in Different Contexts (sexual code-switching)
Identity, desire and lived experience; negotiating multiple citizenships; altering expression in different cultural contexts; sexual embodiment and disability, intersex, or trans identity; dislocated, homeless, disassociated, uprooted sex and desire; disability and/or crip sexualities; sexual identity versus sexual expression; race, ethnicity, and sexuality; fat studies and sexual embodiment; asexual affectionality and romanticism; mapping desire; public sex and the politics of public versus private sexuality; sex games and sexual play that make people uncomfortable; situational sexuality

5. Sex Workers and the Sex Economy
We are particularly interested in hearing from sex workers and the volunteer sector or NGO workers who support their autonomy. Topics may include:

~ sex workers' rights, autonomy, and lived experiences; sex work and safety; sex workers' access to citizenship; sex as economic, social, and symbolic capital; bodily autonomy and sexual agency; sex work and the barter economy; trading sex and engaging in sex work; sex tourism; sexual consumption and consumerism; purchasing sex, sex toys, and sexual images; commoditization of sexuality; sex as currency; sex as labour

6. Workshopping Professional Practice, Training, or Policy
Embracing the ethos "nothing about us without us," we seek proposals from professionals that focus on work-shopping or soliciting feedback on improving practices, training, or policies related to sexuality in your field. What are promising practices for practitioners in your field? Where is your field heading? Presentations in this category must be understandable by a non-specialised or lay audience. We are especially interested in submissions from fields such as:

~ medicine and healthcare, mental healthcare, education, business and finance, law and law enforcement, immigration and detention, research, social services, sex work, activism, trades, hospitality and tourism, science, etc.

What's so special about Progressive Connexions Events?
A fresh, friendly, dynamic, format – at Progressive Connexions we are dedicated to breaking away from the stuffy, old-fashion conference formats, where endless presentations are read aloud off powerpoints. We work to bring you an interactive format, where exchange of experience and information is alternated with captivating workshops, engaging debates and round tables, time set aside for getting to know each other and for discussing common future projects and initiatives, all in a warm, relaxed, egalitarian atmosphere.

A chance to network with international professionals – the beauty of our interdisciplinary events is that they bring together professionals from all over the world and from various fields of activity, all joined together by a shared passion. Not only will the exchange of experience, knowledge and stories be extremely valuable in itself, but we seek to create lasting, ever-growing communities around our projects, which will become a valuable resource for those belonging to them.

A chance to be part of constructing change – There is only one thing we love as much as promoting knowledge: promoting real, lasting social change by encouraging our participants to take collective action, under whichever form is most suited to their needs and expertise (policy proposals, measuring instruments, research projects, educational materials, etc.) We will support all such actions in the aftermath of the event as well, providing a platform for further discussions, advice from the experts on our Project Advisory Team and various other tools and intellectual resources, as needed.

An opportunity to discuss things that matter to you – Our events are not only about discussing how things work in the respective field, but also about how people work in that field – what are the struggles, problems and solutions professionals have found in their line of work, what are the areas where better communication among specialists is needed and how the interdisciplinary approach can help bridge those gaps and help provide answers to questions from specific areas of activity.

An unforgettable experience – When participating in a Progressive Connexions event, there is a good chance you will make some long-time friends. Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are history-laden and suited to the event.

Conference Outcomes and Outputs
The events we organise form a continual stream of conversations, activities and projects which grow and evolve in different directions. The outcomes and 'outputs' which can productively flow from these is a dynamic response to the gatherings themselves. As our meetings are attended by people from different backgrounds, professions and vocations, the range of desirable outcomes are potentially diverse, fluid and appropriate to what took place.

We anticipate that some papers and contributions from the conference might contribute to a themed volume to be considered by the At The Interface/Probing the Boundaries series published by Brill, for whom Progressive Connexions director Dr Robert Fisher is Series Editor. Potential editors will be chosen from interested conference delegates.

Additional possible outputs include: open volume on-line annuals; online toolboxes and repositories; collaboration platforms; reviews; reports; policy statements; position papers; declarations of principles; petitions, subsequent meetings for in depth exploration of specific issues, workshops, courses and schools; proposals for personal and professional development opportunities; other options you would like us to consider.

Ethos
Progressive Connexions believes it is a mark of personal courtesy and professional respect to your colleagues that all delegates should attend for the full duration of the meeting. If you are unable to make this commitment, please do not submit an abstract or proposal for presentation.

Please note: Progressive Connexions is a not-for-profit network and we are not in a position to be able to assist with conference travel or subsistence, nor can we offer discounts off published rates and fees.

Humour: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Humour
An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Monday 23rd July to Tuesday 24th July 2018
Prague, Czech Republic

Humour seems to be a core feature of human life. The ability to provoke laughter, provide amusement or find people and the situations in which they find themselves funny is universally common across cultures and societies. Humour also appears to work in different ways and on different levels; age, education, gender, ethnicity, space and place all seem to play a part in the things people find funny. This conference will seek to map the way humour works at all levels and begin to ask why we laugh, how we laugh and what purpose humour serves.

Humour appears in many forms ranging from simple slapstick to sophisticated satire. It crosses numerous types and styles, including absurdity, banter, buffoonery, burlesque, comedy, derision, facetiousness, farce, foolery, irony, jocularity, mimicry, mockery, parody, puns, ridicule, sarcasm, scorn, spoonerism, taunts, tease, waggishness, witticism. Sometimes it is positive, sympathetic, or constructive; other times it can hurt, harm and damage. It can be playful or serious. It can be an act of resistance or outright rebellion; it can be inappropriate and uncontrolled. It can be repressive or subversive, self-deprecating or ironic.

No matter the form or shape it assumes, humour has a number of functions. It can send a message, reveal something new about an otherwise unquestioned event or situation, or about ourselves and our worldview. Through surprise and contradiction, humour can shift the ordinary into the extraordinary, break taboos, transgress boundaries, or call into question our otherwise steadfast beliefs. And while many of its functions are positive, humour can also allow individuals or cultures to elide disturbing facts about social inequality, ignore or downplay injustices and perpetuate stereotypes. Not infrequently, a form of humour more akin to aggressiveness, that incorporates malice, can be used to cause intentional harm, shame and exercise control.

Possibly the most popular form of humour is comedy. In the 21st century the entertainment industry has expanded significantly in what some see as the pre-planned 'professionalisation' of humour. Television shows explore situation comedy, stand up comedians attract huge numbers to live shows. Humour is carefully channelled, calculated, designed to evoke or provoke laughter and in the process reveals important differences between the two.

We aim to bring together participants from a wide range of disciplines, professions, and vocations to create a unique, interdisciplinary event that will explore humour in all its wondrous forms. Our goal is to examine the intersections between humour and the human, and to look beneath the surface and beyond the laughter to examine the reasons why we laugh and why we respond with humour to persons, events and situations.

Some of our suggested issues to be approached include (but are not limited to):

Humour to human: theory of humours, theories of humour
The archaeology of humour and laughter: from ancient times to the new Millennium
Humour and pain, humour and death: laughter as therapy
Humour in times of change and crisis: acts of resistance
The language of humour
Genderised versions of humour
Laughter in the classroom
Humour in performance: theatre, cinema, stand-up comedy, television, music
Humour in folklore: trickster figures and fictional characters
Entertainers in time: clowns and harlequins, pranksters and jesters, comics and comedians
Borders of humour: dark humour, horror humour, crude humour, toilet humour, off-colour humour
Humour – levels of acceptance in science, business, politics, religion, architecture, gastronomy, etc.
Humour and the self: developing one's sense of humour
The English sense of humour: understatement, euphemism, self-effacement
Globalisation of humour: traceability and translatability
The present status and future prospects of humour

Our main goal is to facilitate dialogue and spark innovative collaborations and discussions at an international level, in a dynamic and interactive setting. Thus, we welcome participants from all relevant disciplines, professions and vocations (NGO personnel, aid workers, researchers, mental and physical health professionals, educators, human rights activists, counsellors, social workers, policy makers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, business owners, military personnel, photographers, designers, editors, journalists, comedians, therapists, customs workers and members of the border patrol, labour specialists, historians, sociologists, psychologists, economists, anthropologists, ethnographers social media experts, artists and many more)

What's so Special About Progressive Connexions Events?
A fresh, friendly, dynamic format – at Progressive Connexions we are dedicated to breaking away from the stuffy, old-fashion conference formats, where endless presentations are read aloud off PowerPoints.

Psychodynamics in Times of Austerity

Psychodynamics in Times of Austerity
18th to 20th May 2018
Lisbon, Portugal

Psychodynamics in Times of Austerity, a Psychoanalysis and Politics spring symposium in the rooms of the Portuguese Psychoanalytical Society, May 18th-20th 2018, Avenida da República 97, 50 , 1050-190, Lisboa http://www.psa-pol.org

Call for papers (deadline Jan. 20th 2018):
"One bright day in late autumn a family of Ants were bustling about in the warm sunshine, drying out the grain they had stored up during the summer, when a starving Grasshopper, his fiddle under his arm, came up and humbly begged for a bite to eat. "What!" cried the Ants in surprise, "haven't you stored anything away for the winter? What in the world were you doing all last summer?" "I didn't have time to store up any food," whined the Grasshopper; "I was so busy making music that before I knew it the summer was gone." The Ants shrugged their shoulders in disgust. "Making music, were you?" they cried. "Very well; now dance!" And they turned their backs on the Grasshopper and went on with their work" (Aesop ca. 600 BC). This fable can be read as advocating austerity and condemning as irresponsible the grasshopper's orientation towards the pleasure and joy of the moment. To Yanis Varoufakis (2016), "Any narrative of this type," referring to a recent myth where Greeks (primarily) are cast as the grasshoppers and Germans (primarily) as the ants, "is terribly misleading as a description of the causes of our current crisis".

The word 'austerity' derives from Latin 'austerus', severe, and denotes 1) sternness or severity in manner or attitude, plainness or simplicity in appearance, or 2) difficult economic conditions created by government measure to reduce public expenditure. As a political-economic term it refers to policies that aim to reduce budget deficits through spending cuts, tax increases, or a combination of both. Since governments that tend to push through austerity tend to come from the right, they have an ideological preference for lower taxes and a smaller state and would thus aim to cut state spending. These measures tend to increase unemployment and reduce consumption. On the basis of classic liberal ideas austerity emerged as a doctrine of neoliberalism in the 20th Century.

To Joseph E. Stiglitz, "Austerity has failed repeatedly, from its early use under US President Herbert Hoover, which turned the stock-market crash into the Great Depression, to the IMF "programs" imposed on East Asia and Latin America in recent decades. And yet, when Greece got into trouble, it was tried again." Though Greece succeeded in converting a primary budget deficit into a primary surplus, the contraction in government spending led to "25% unemployment, a 22% fall in GDP since 2009, and a 35% increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio" (2015).

To Amartya Sen, after 2008, "There was an odd confusion in policy thinking between the real need for institutional reform in Europe and the imagined need for austerity – two quite different things", and cutting public expenditure did not serve the cause of institutional reform. Sen makes the point that economic growth is needed if we want to reduce public debt, and austerity is essentially anti-growth. Second, while the public debt-to GDP ratio was considerably larger in Britain from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s than at any time since the crisis in 2008. Yet at that time, Britain was confidently building a welfare state rather than panicking.

Welfare states are now in process of being dismantled, and redistribution takes place, within nations from poorer to richer citizens, and similarly between them. The one dominant discourse still standing is the economic one. In Paul Verhaege's words: "We live in a neoliberal society in which everything has become a product. Furthermore, this is linked to a so-called meritocracy in which everyone is held responsible for their own success or failure – the myth of the self-made man." Within this logic, the most important criterion is profit, or money. Matters that until recently were human rights, such as medical care, education and a free press, have become commodities, negotiable objects, and, at least in part, privileges. The individual has a duty to succeed according to an "objective" standard that is set externally. In a management culture where efficiency becomes the highest and indeed, the only good the individual is no longer willing to make sacrifices for the organisation, but is only interested in what it can provide. "In concrete terms this means that everything is measured, preferably quite literally, in terms of production, growth and profit. To conduct these measurements each organisation must make frequent evaluations, which within a short space of time take on the air of formal inspections. After all everyone is now suspect because everyone is out for their own good." Arguably, this state of affairs results in a shift from intrinsic to extrinsic motivation, a loss of autonomy and an erosion of trust.

On the level of affect, this recalls Adorno's description of 'the coldness of isolated competitors', "people completely cold who cannot endure their own coldness and yet cannot change it. Every person today, without exception, feels too little loved, because every person cannot love enough" (1966). "What recourse does a child have if he is uncontained?" asks Carvalho (2002). "One answer might be identification with the figure that fails to contain, and the fantasy of occupying the object. The logic of this is supplied by Matte Blanco's formulation of the basic matrix, as well as by the characteristics of the infinite set in which the individual may experience himself as indistinguishable from his objects, who in turn may be indistinguishable from one another. The statement, in an infinite set where symmetrical logic is predominant, 'Mummy dismisses B' is interchangeable with 'B dismisses Mummy' or, of course, 'the analyst dismisses B'." Or, in Adorno's formulation, "Whoever is hard with himself earns the right to be hard with others as well and avenges himself for the pain whose manifestation he was not allowed to show and had to repress."

An idea proposed by Freud in Civilization and its Discontents (1930) is that individuals are expect to live up to an ideal image imposed on them by society. Their failure to do so, and even their success, lead to forms of suffering. We may assume that different social structures will lead to different areas of tension between individuals and society, between different individuals within a society and within the individuals themselves. We invite papers that problematize the relation between today's politics and ideology of austerity and people's fantasies, affects, defences – and that reflect on the barriers to and possibilities for affective and social renewal.

This is an interdisciplinary conference – we invite theoretical contributions and historical, literary or clinical case studies on these and related themes from philosophers, sociologists, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, group analysts, literary theorists, historians, anthropologists, and others. Perspectives from different psychoanalytic schools will be most welcome. We promote discussion among the presenters and participants, for the symposium series creates a space where representatives of different perspectives come together, engage with one another's contributions and participate in a community of thought. Therefore, attendance to the whole symposium is obligatory. Due to the nature of the forum audio recording is not permitted.

Presentations are expected to take half an hour. Another 20 minutes is set aside for discussion. There is a 10 min break in between each paper. Please send an abstract of 200 to 300 words, attached in a word-document, to psychoanalysis.politics@gmail.com by January 20th 2018. We will respond by, and present a preliminary programme on February 1st 2018. If you would like to sign up to participate without presenting a paper, please contact us after this date.
