The mission of the CUTN is to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Central University of Tamil Nadu established the Department of Social Work in July 2014. The Department offers 2 years Master of Social Work Programme (with Medical & Psychiatry and Community Development Specializations) with a focus on creative approaches to critical thinking for leadership in diverse social work practice. Our Master of Social Work Programme signifies achievement of professional competence in Social Work.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Mental health problems are amongst the most important contributors to the global burden of disease and disability. The Global Burden of Disease world over (measured in DALYs), due to mental health concerns is greater than that expected by tuberculosis, cancer or heart disease. Mental and neurological conditions account for 12.3% of disability adjusted years lost globally and 31% of all years lived with disability at all ages and in both sexes according to 2000 estimates. In India, about 20 to 30 million people appear to be in need of mental health care. Research studies indicate that mental disorders were higher in urban areas, among women, in the age group of 35-44 years and in the lower socio-economic strata. In India nearly 1.5 million people suffer from severe mental disorders and 5.7 million suffer from various psychiatric disorders require immediate attention.Compared to this huge need, there are about 3500 psychiatrists, 1000 psychiatric social workers,1000 clinical psychologists and 900 psychiatric nurses in the country. The recent Atlas project of the WHO reports that all countries in South East Asian region and nearly all countries in Africa have less than one psychiatrist for a population of one lac. The population of India exceeding one billion people has access to less than four thousand psychiatrists as compared to the nearly eighty thousand psychiatrists for eight hundred and forty million in Europe. In India there exist the gap between magnitude of mental health problems and the lack of services and trained professionals to address it. Thus a training/teaching program with the knowledge and skills to understand individual and interpersonal distress and problems is a need of the hour. To meet the needs and demands of mental health services is quite complex with respect to Indian context, a conference on it would enable us in furthering our understanding of the complexities involved.  Thus it is essential to call for papers on related themes for a thought provoking and stimulating exercise by preparing substantive research papers for further academic pursuits and making the needful dent in effective policy making.
