***ACAH2017 Conference Theme: "History, Story, Narrative"

Historians are far from the only interested party in writing history. In a sense it is an interest we all share – whether we are talking politics, region, family birthright, or even personal experience. We are spectators to the process of history while being intimately situated within its impact and formations.

How, then, best to write it? Is it always the victor's version? Have we not begun increasingly to write "history from below", that lived by those who are not at the top of the power hierarchy? Are accounts of history always gender-inflected, hitherto, at least, towards men rather than women? Who gets to tell history if the issue is colonialism or class? How does geography, the power of place, intersect with history? What is the status of the personal story or narrative within the larger frame of events?

This conference addresses issues of writing history from literary and other discursive perspectives. That is to say: novels, plays, poems, autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, travel logs and a variety of styles of essay. One thinks of Shakespeare's history plays, Tolstoy's War and Peace, Shi Nai'an's The Water Margin, Balzac's La Comedie Humaine. It also addresses oral history, the spoken account or witness, the Hiroshima survivor to the modern Syrian migrant.

Which also connects to the nexus of media and history. The great "historical" films continue to hold us, be it Eisenstein's October: Ten Days That Shook the World (1925) or Gone with the Wind (1940). We live in an age of documentaries, whether film or TV. There is a view that we also inhabit "instant" history, the download to laptop, the app, the all-purpose mobile. How has this technology changed our perception, our lived experience, of history? What is the role of commemoration, parade, holiday, festival or statuary in the writing of history?

The different modes by which we see and understand history, flow and counter-flow, nevertheless come back to certain basics.

One asks whether we deceive ourselves in always asking for some grand narrative. Can there only be one narrator or is history by necessity a colloquium, contested ground? Is national history a myth? And history-writing itself: is it actually a form of fiction, an artifice which flatters to deceive? What, exactly, is a historical fact?

This conference, we hope, will address these perspectives and others that connect and arise.

In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017.

– The ACAH2017 Organising Committee (iafor.org/acah2017-committee)

***Programme

**Plenary Panel: Art and Narrative in the Public Sphere
Featured Panellists: Yutaka Mino and Tan Tarn How

Drawing on the conference theme of "History, Story, Narrative", this panel will examine art as a medium for telling stories and creating narrative, and how curation can be used to contextualise and situate works of art.

In a comparative analysis encompassing divergent cultural perspectives, the panellists will discuss the politics and role of art, drawing on examples from both Singapore and Japan, and comparing and contrasting with other countries.

The panel will focus on the importance and continued relevance of art in the public sphere, addressing questions of how public art and public spaces can create stories and narratives, and how these narratives can assist in the construction and structuring of a national identity, including the following: How can art create a public dialogue? How can this dialogue be harnessed for the good of the community? And what is the role played by curation in contributing to the development of a local, regional and national community and economy?

**Plenary Panel: History, Story, Narrative – Constructing History
Featured Panellists: Dr Brian Daizen Victoria, Professor Georges Depeyrot, Dr A. Robert Lee
& Professor Myles Chilton

This interdisciplinary history and literature panel will look at how histories are created and propagated and the difficulties involved in the inherently political act of writing of history. How does the "truth" act as heuristic and guide, and how is the concept abused to stifle dissent and impose order? This panel will draw on contemporary controversies and invite participation from delegates from around the world to address questions that include the following: How important is the construction of national history in the creation of personal and national identity? How does history shape our political decisions today? How do we go about building, revising and deconstructing history?

This panel will feature both historians and literary scholars and will explore the relations and tensions between fictional and historical narrative that are in many ways vital to definitions of literature, raising questions as to the "truth" of the history registered in literary texts as opposed to that of historical texts. The panel will also examine literature as alternative history, whether Fredric Jameson's call to "always historicize!" is still relevant, the aliterary subversions of "official" history, the historicity of fiction, and, of course, the fiction of historicity.

**Further programming for The Asian Conference on Arts and Humanities 2017 will be announced in the coming months.

CITY2017 Conference Theme: "Cities of the World. World Cities."

History has long shown an ambivalence towards the city. On the one hand, it has been the metropolis, a necessary, vital site of commerce and culture. On the other it has been? ?considered the fallen place, at once dangerous and shadowed in crime.

This ambivalence holds across continents, from the Americas to Asia, from Europe to Australasia. How, in an age of transnationalism and global media, should we regard these cities?

What are our prevailing images of the city as past and present, magnet and threat? Do cities retain their lust?re as citadels of enlightenment and art or are they urban dinosaurs wracked by over-crowdedness and pollution?

The forthcoming IAFOR conference on the City is an exciting addition to our global conference calendar. It will place the international, intercultural and interdisciplinary tenets of IAFOR at the very heart of multiple academic approaches to the city, from the development of the classic city states east and west, to the emergence of the vast organisms that are our modern cities.

Different cities have very different personalities, influenced, for example, by history, government, climate, and geographical location – from uptight financial powerhouses to relaxed tourist resorts, they are governed in different ways, and compete against each other for attention and resources, sometimes domestically, but also with other foreign rivals. This conference encourages interdisciplinary and comparative reflections from the world's cities, from small cathedral city to sprawling metropolis.

The city has always been a centre of creativity and imagination. The many cultures that are formed within the city have become definitive of the development of human civilisation in different eras. From the cities that were the product of the ancient river civilisations on the Nile? and the Tigris Euphrates or the Ganges and the Yellow River, to the classical and medieval city states, to the modern cities of the industrial revolution, the city provides an exciting object of study. The conference is set up to encourage the exploration of the city in all its variations and to provide a further context for reflections on globalisation as the wave of today and tomorrow.

This conference will be held in parallel to The IAFOR International Conference on Global Studies 2017, and will provide a counter to the localised perspectives that can easily obscure the simple fact that many of the world's major cities have now become, more than ever, global portals and places of international exchange. Registration for either of these conferences will allow participants to attend sessions in the other.

We invite academics from around the world to join us in the fascinating historical, cultural, and artistic centre of Barcelona, to exchange ideas and participate in the continuing story of this city.

***ECLL2017 Conference Theme: "Educating for Change"

Whether we are looking at why we must change, or how education has changed or even how education will change, change affects all of us involved in language education in many ways. Administrators, teacher trainers, teachers, students: we all wear many hats and we all come face-to-face with change, sometimes on a daily basis. Positive change is about improvement: improving proficiency, improving lives, helping learners achieve their goals and dreams and ultimately, broadening horizons.

In our work as educators we are often asked to effect change – that we are change-makers can be seen in the new curriculums, new material, and even new techniques or methods that we develop. For those of us who conduct research, our research is often focused on finding "better" or more effective ways of teaching often measured in outcomes such as students entered with an average of X and improved to an average of Y. In such a case, improvement = change! But change is also an area of research as can be seen by looking at journals such as the Journal of Educational Change, Changes in Higher Education, Culture and Change, and Educational Research for Social Change, to mention four. It is a serious area of study, and one worth our attention.

The focus of the last journal mentioned above is worth looking at. Change is not only about test scores or proficiency going up. It is also about lasting change in one's life, life choices, and looking beyond us as individuals to the society we live in. Social change and a focus on improving the societies we live in is another outcome of education. In recent years, there has been a focus on language and identity, as well as an embrace of sociocultural theory and language development.

At the same time change for the sake of change is not a good reason for change. There is often a tension between the status quo (which is not always bad) and the desire to change. As invested members of our field, we need to be able to examine change, identifying and applying that which is appropriate and will further our goals while also having the wisdom and gumption to reject change that does not make sense. As Dewey said, "Reforms which rest simply upon the enactment of law, or the threatening of certain penalties, or upon changes in mechanical or outward arrangements are transitory and futile."

And so we welcome you to this year's conferences, where we can examine change in ways that are important to each of us. What are its challenges, its complexities, and its constraints? It is electrifying to think about the wide-ranging conversations we will have as we consider how we can go about educating for change the world over.

In conjunction with our global partners, including the University of Sussex and Birkbeck, University of London, UK, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017.

**Featured Panel: Educating for Change: Educating for Global Citizenship
Featured Panel Chair: Dr Joseph Haldane

UNESCO considers global citizenship education to consist of "Nurturing respect for all, building a sense of belonging to a common humanity and helping learners become responsible and active global citizens." This panel will look at the ways in which language teachers in particular are positioned to educate for global citizenship, and indeed carry a particular responsibility, burden or opportunity to engage with this concept.

The panellists will discuss how language can shape identities and transform students, drawing on their personal experience of the transformative effects of language on their students as well as on themselves.

**Featured Speaker: Professor Brian Hudson, University of Sussex, UK

Brian Hudson is Professor of Education and Head of the School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sussex. He is the main Organiser of the World Education Research Association (WERA) International Research Network on Didactics – Learning and Teaching; a member of the WERA Outreach Committee; an Associate Editor of the Journal of Curriculum Studies and a Board Member of the Teacher Education Policy in Europe (TEPE) Network. He is Honorary Member of the EERA Network on Didactics – Learning and Teaching; Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Education Studies and Leadership at the University of Ghana.

This open access journal, which conforms to the highest academic standards, reflects the interdisciplinary and international nature of our conferences.
