SPECIAL FOCUS: Sharing Practices and Sustainable Urban Fabrics

The theme of "Sharing Practices and Sustainable Fabrics" is in the spotlight for TCE 2025. It delves into the impact and opportunities presented by the sharing economy within urban landscapes and realizes the utopia of the sustainable city. Rather than adhering to traditional, compartmentalized urban planning, this thematic focus examines the contemporary dynamics of socio-economic networks shaping urban spaces.
The new sharing economy fosters a collaborative approach across the spectrum of creation, production, distribution, trade, and consumption of goods and services, contrasting with the rigid delineations of modernist urban planning. Its essence lies in grassroots networking among local stakeholders, facilitating collective schemes like peer-to-peer and business-to-consumer interactions, thus challenging monopolies and empowering smaller players.

This paradigm shift is propelled by the advancements in information technologies, online networks, and data flow, alongside the influence of algorithms on the organization of spaces and social networks. However, amidst its promise lies inherent controversy regarding the distribution of benefits and the disruption of power dynamics. Loose regulations struggle to contain these emerging systems and to spread the benefits, possibly leading to ethical dilemmas and the real danger of over-personalization, which risks isolating communities rather than fostering connections.
Moreover, the sharing economy's impact extends to the workforce, characterized by a preference for simplified, temporary, and insecure manual jobs, with direct implications for the built environment encompassing housing, public spaces, green areas, and community dynamics.

The conference aims to explore how social innovations, encompassing new practices and organizational models, can complement technical innovations in achieving sustainable urban development in both its resource referencing and social meaning. Specifically, it will delve into the nexus between sharing practices and built structures within cities, considering diverse forms of sharing - whether profit-oriented or nonprofit-oriented, spontaneous or planned - across various urban contexts.

Critical questions will guide discussions, probing into the ideal configurations of cities, neighborhoods, and buildings conducive to promoting sharing practices while addressing potential challenges and complexities. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary dialogue, welcoming submissions ranging from case studies to theoretical frameworks and actionable recommendations.

SPECIAL FOCUS: Minds and Machines: Artificial Intelligence, Algorithms, Ethics, and Order in Global Society

Knowledge, institutions, and technologies are deeply embedded within specific sociocultural contexts. Artificial intelligence has risen to prominence, not merely as a technological advancement but as a phenomenon intrinsically entangled with global sociocultural dynamics, highlighting epistemological and regulatory fault lines that cross local and global spheres.
The epistemological fault line impacts the very foundations of knowledge. Whose knowledge is being prioritized and valorized in developing and applying AI technologies? This question points to a deeper inquiry into the epistemic injustices embedded in the fabric of AI, where certain forms of knowledge—often emanating from dominant cultures and societies—are privileged over others. The implications of such epistemic preferences are profound, as they shape the AI's "knowing capacity" and, consequently, its impact on diverse populations.
On the regulatory front, the governance of information flows questions the adequacy and fairness of existing regulatory frameworks in managing the complex dynamics of AI across different jurisdictions. This regulatory fault line interrogates who is recognized as a data subject and whose interests are protected in the sprawling data ecosystems that AI technologies inhabit. It underscores the necessity for governance structures capable of addressing the transnational nature of AI, ensuring that regulatory mechanisms are responsive to local needs and attuned to the global implications of AI deployment.
These fault lines reveal the inherently non-technical challenges posed by AI. It is imperative to ensure that the development and application of AI technologies are aligned with human values, societal well-being, and environmental sustainability. This calls for a concerted effort to integrate social science perspectives into the heart of AI discourse, ensuring that ethical considerations, social justice, and equity are integral to the AI innovation process. At the Eigthteenth Global Studies Conference, we embrace a multidisciplinary approach to navigate the complexities of AI in a manner that prioritizes human dignity and environmental stewardship. This endeavor is not only technological, but also of necessity profoundly ethical and political one. It calls for a collective commitment to redefining the principles and practices that will guide the future of AI governance.
