Fwd: CfP: Re-Inventing Eastern Europe, Riga, Latvia, 29 – 30 January 2016

Call for Papers
The Fifth Euroacademia International Conference
Re-Inventing Eastern Europe

29 – 30 January 2016

Riga, Latvia

Deadline for Paper Proposals: 10 December 2015

Conference Description:

The Fifth Euroacademia International Conference 'Re-Inventing Eastern Europe' aims to make a case and to provide alternative views on the dynamics, persistence and manifestations of practices of alterity making that take place in Europe and broadly in the mental mappings of the world. It offers an opportunity for scholars, activists and practitioners to identify, discuss, and debate the multiple dimensions in which specific narratives of alterity making towards Eastern Europe preserve their salience today in re-furbished and re-fashioned manners. The conference aims to look at the processes of alterity making as puzzles and to address the persistence of the East-West dichotomies.

Not a long time ago, in 2010, a British lady was considered bigoted by Gordon Brown upon asking 'Where do all these Eastern Europeans come from?'. Maybe, despite her concern with the dangers of immigration for Britain, the lady was right in showing that such a question still awaits for answers in Europe. The ironic thing however is that a first answer to such a question would point to the fact that the Eastern Europeans come from the Western European imaginary. As Iver Neumann puts it, 'regions are invented by political actors as a political programme, they are not simply waiting to be discovered'. And, as Larry Wolff skillfully showed, Eastern Europe is an invention emanated initially from the intellectual agendas of the elites of the Enlightenment that later found its peak of imaginary separation during the Cold War.

The Economist, explicitly considered Eastern Europe to be wrongly labeled and elaborated that 'it was never a very coherent idea and it is becoming a damaging one'. The EU enlargement however, was expected to make the East – West division obsolete under the veil of a prophesized convergence. That would have finally proven the non-ontologic, historically contingent and unhappy nature of the division of Europe and remind Europeans of the wider size of their continent and the inclusive and empowering nature of their values. Yet still, 20 years after the revolutions in the Central and Eastern European countries, Leon Mark, while arguing that the category of Eastern Europe is outdated and misleading, bitterly asks a still relevant question: 'will Europe ever give up the need to have an East?'

Eastern Europe was invented as a region and continues to be re-invented from outside and inside. From outside its invention was connected with alterity making processes, and, from inside the region, the Central and Eastern European countries got into a civilizational beauty contest themselves in search of drawing the most western profile: what's Central Europe, what's more Eastern, what's more Ottoman, Balkan, Byzantine, who is the actual kidnapped kid of the West, who can build better credentials by pushing the Easterness to the next border. A wide variety of scholars addressed the western narratives of making the Eastern European other as an outcome of cultural politics of enlightenment, as an effect of EU's need to delineate its borders, as an outcome of its views on security , or as a type of 'orientalism' or post-colonialism. Most of these types of approaches are still useful in analyzing the persistence of an East-West slope. The region is understood now under a process of convergence, socialization and Europeanization that will have as outcomes an 'ever closer union' where the East and the West will fade away as categories. Yet the reality is far from such an outcome while the persistence of categories of alterity making towards the 'East' is not always dismantled. The discourse on core-periphery, new Europe/old Europe is rather gaining increasing ground in the arena of European identity narratives often voiced by the EU.

The conference is organized yet by no means restricted to the following panels:

The Agenda of the Enlightenment: Inventing Eastern Europe ~ Europe East and West: On the Persistence of the Division ~ Reviewing Alternative Modernities: East and West ~ Writing About the East in West ~ Writing about the West in East ~ The Eastern European 'Other' Inside the European Union ~ Mental Mappings on Eastern Europe ~ People-ing the Eastern Europeans ~ Geopolitical Views on the East-West Division ~ Post-colonial readings of Eastern Europe ~ Making Borders to the East: Genealogies of Othering ~ Inclusion/Exclusion Nexuses ~ Myths and Misconceptions on Eastern Europe ~ Core Europe/Non-Core Europe ~ Central Europe vs. Eastern Europe ~ Reading the Past: On Memory and Memorialization ~ Eastern Europe and the Crises ~ Assessing Convergence in Eastern Europe ~ Explaining Divergence in Eastern Europe ~ Central and Eastern Europe and the EU ~ Scenarios for the Future of Eastern Europe ~ Eastern Europe and Asymmetries of Europeanization ~ Axiological Framings of Eastern Europe ~ Eastern Europe in Western Literature ~ Re-making Eastern Europe: Pushing the Easterness to the Next Border ~ From the Ottoman Empire to Russia: Cultural Categories in the Making of Eastern Europe ~ Go West! First International Conference on Hermeneutics of Symbol, Myth and “Modernity of antiquity” in Italian literature and the Arts from the Renaissance up to the present day

First International Conference on Hermeneutics of Symbol, Myth and "Modernity of antiquity" in Italian literature and the Arts from the Renaissance up to the present day
1st to 2nd December 2015
Milan, Italy
http://convegni.unicatt.it/ermeneuticasimbolomitoemodernitadellantico

The hermeneutics of the "modernity of the antiquity"» is a still pioneering branch of research in Italian literature and art studies aimed discovering the hidden meaning of literary and art works where other approaches failed or proved unsatisfactory.
Its distinguishing trait consists in using, along with all the results of historical, critical and philological studies, ancient pagan religious and mythological sources and heresiological traditions as tools to interprete literary and artistic works skillfully conceived as erudite enigmas with the multilayered semantic structure of a shrine or of a palimpsest. Its main objective is to open the lid of the shrine, namely to go beyond the scriptio superior of the images so as to discover their true but veiled meaning.
Such images, conceived with a palimpsest structure, are therefore symbols. "One made of two" is indeed the basic meaning of the Greek word ????????, as used by Plato in Symposium 16, 191D. A symbolic image also has a different meaning. In other words, it contains an idea which gives it a meaning other than the apparent, realistic one. In the case of images and works conceived from the perspective of the "modernity of antiquity", it is a mythological-religious heathen or heresiological idea, belonging to non-Homeric, but anti-Olympic ancient religious systems, or ancient mystery cults, either Mediterranean or non Mediterranean.
Within the perspective of the "modernity of the antiquity", a scholar who does not limit its research to a descriptive, analytical and empirical analysis, will have to find and prove the existence of this idea.
The «First International Conference on Hermeneutics of Symbol, Myth and "Modernity of antiquity"» in Italian literature and the Arts from the Renaissance up to the present day represents a chance to promote the hermeneutics of the "modernity of the antiquity" and, at the same time, to stimulate new and further studies in this direction that, although still unexplored, promises to open up new and interesting hermeneutical perspectives.

Interdisciplinary Thinking and Planning: Sharing Good Practice and Learning New Ways of Doing

Interdisciplinary Thinking and Planning:
Sharing Good Practice and Learning New Ways of Doing

Call for Participation 2016

Wednesday 11th May – Friday 13th May 2016
Prague, Czech Republic

This meeting will explore the nuts and bolts of the processes of interdisciplinarity. We need to delve into the distinctions between inter-, multi-, cross- and trans-disciplinarity. In medicine, for example, "multi-disciplinary team meetings" are an important aspect of patient care, but all the disciplines involved have a medical focus – spiritual and/or emotional care, including art and self-expression, are considered outliers in the healing process. In academia, on the other hand, "trans-disciplinarity" often holds the connotation of being neither fish nor fowl – the significance of its scholarly concentration or application is often unclear and imprecise.

This project, central to Inter-Disciplinary.Net's mission, is envisaged as a multi-year venture. It runs alongside and an extension of the inter-disciplinary methods workshop scheduled for February 2016 in Budapest. Like that project, during the first year, we will begin to work towards and extend our definitions of the topic and the development of inter-disciplinary thinking and planning: how we prepare, and how we do, inter-disciplinary work. The second year will build on the first, and then extend its exploration into the topic of planning interdisciplinary teaching and learning. The third year will begin to look at applications of interdisciplinary thinking and planning in a more global sense. For example, how might an interdisciplinary mindset affect and bring about social transformation?

The 1st Global Conference on Interdisciplinary Thinking and Planning will investigate the topic from a broad spectrum of theoretical and practical approaches. Interdisciplinarity is too complex a phenomenon to be defined in a prescriptive manner. Therefore, we are putting out a Call for Presentations from practitioners, academicians and professionals working in:

Education at any level (primary through tertiary and post-graduate; vocational training)
Health care (including mental health, chronic illness, elderly care, end-of-life care)
Care of people with disabilities (including special needs children)
Government and NGOs
Economics and business
Psychology and other social sciences
Religion and spirituality

We have identified several questions for this preliminary set of discussions. This gathering will have a primarily dialogical cast. Participants are required to submit an abstract of 500 words outlining a specific topic or line of inquiry. Rather than presenting papers, participants will be chosen in terms of developing a comprehensive blend of interdisciplinary intersections for examination and review. Our aim is to extend our reach as widely as possible.

Accordingly, we are particularly interested in abstracts that address the following issues:

Definitions
What does interdisciplinarity mean?
How is it to be understood as distinct from trans-disciplinarity, multi-disciplinarity, cross-disciplinarity?

Questions of Value
How can we 'make the case' for interdisciplinary research: to our colleagues, our institutions, within our own disciplines, to funding sources?
How can interdisciplinary work be validated in terms of tenure, publications, presentations, annual reports, etc.?
How does one present to an interdisciplinary group?
How does one present inter-disciplinarity to a group that is not used to inter-disciplinarity?
How does one establish an interdisciplinary mindset within one's own context?
Demonstrating success stories highlighting the value of interdisciplinary thinking and planning

Inter-Disciplinary Thinking and Planning
How is inter-disciplinary thinking and planning done in different disciplines: a comparative guide
General how-to techniques/strategies/processes/projects
How to build bridges between academia and practitioners
How to establish plans, strategies, frameworks, quality standards and assessment guidelines for evaluation of interdisciplinary work
How to foster a formal dialogical component in inter-disciplinary studies
Delving Questions (to get at the theoretical issues)
How to deal with different premises/conceptual assumptions/cultural relativism when working across disciplines?
What does 'history' mean from the standpoint of different disciplines? A 'historical analysis' has often meant looking at a concept from the standpoint of economics or sociology (for example). Is history an explanation, an analysis, a critique, a linear overview, a matter of perspective and/or privilege, or ?
How do different disciplines deal with questions of ethics?
For different disciplines, how might each begin to move away from academic dominance: how to build bridges beyond the academy, fostering or balancing involvement between academicians and practitioners

Managing Interdisciplinary Conflict
Combatting territoriality
How to avoid domination by any one discipline
Looking at intersectionality: how different forms of oppression/privilege/bias intersect and affect research
Re-valuing anarchy: allowing a certain amount of methodological anarchy to enliven old structures of thought
Letting academia and practice be infused by the spirit of art: what is 'interdisciplinary art'? [Analogy to how art is often multi-media]

The Future(s) of Interdisciplinarity
How to widen the scope for interdisciplinary output: beyond print-based media; looking at more media-rich vehicles/venues
Finding a metaphor for inter-disciplinarity

Further details and information can be found at the conference webs ite:
http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/research/interdisciplinarity/interdisciplinary-thinking-and-planning/call-for-presentations/

Call for Cross-Over Presentations

We welcome submissions which cross the divide between both project areas. If you would like to be considered for a cross project session, please mark your submission "Crossover Submission".
