The Asian Conference on Language Learning 2018 (ACLL2018)

***The Early Bird Submission Deadline is quickly approaching. In order to be eligible for the Early Bird Discount, submit your abstract by December 8, 2017 through the Call for Papers page of the conference website. https://acll.iafor.org/call-for-papers/

Greetings from The Asian Conference on Language Learning (ACLL2018) Organising Committee.

We are very pleased this year to welcome Dr Bonny Norton of the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia, Canada, to our conversation about how to move forward as international educators in a challenging time. With her career-spanning research interests in globally situated identity(ies) and a transdisciplinary sociocultural approach to what constitutes good language teaching, Dr Norton might well have written our conference theme, "Surviving and Thriving: Education in Times of Change", for us.

We will also feature Dr. Garold Murray of the Centre for Liberal Arts and Language Education at Okayama University and his talk, "Language Learning in a Time of Complexity and Change," in which he suggests we look beyond the in-class/out-of-class divide when viewing learners. Dr. Murray has served as convener of the AILA Research Network on Learner Autonomy in Language Learning (2005-2011) and president of the Japan Association of Self-Access Language Learning (2005-2010).

Presented in the historic port city of Kobe, which has been critical to internationalization of Japan, this IAFOR conference will attract researchers and practitioners from around the world. At this eighth ACLL conference we will continue to provide the international, intercultural, interdisciplinary and intellectual meeting ground that past participants have come to expect. Meet your peers from over 40 countries to exchange experiences, perspectives and expertise on how to help our learners survive and thrive.

This conference, like all previous ACLL conferences, will take an interdisciplinary approach. The major streams addressed include Culture and Language, Psychology of the Learner, Intersectionality, Plurilingualism – Bilingualism, Educational Technologies, Learning Environments, Professional Development, Assessment, Approaches, Applied Linguistics Research, Disabilities and the Language Learner, Educational Policy, Lifelong Learning, and Translation and Interpretation. The stream of Culture and Language Learning has been expanded to include Cross-cultural Communication, Cultural Literacy, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Literature and Language Learning, and Linguistic Landscapes. If you have something to share related to Language Learning and Teaching this is the conference for you!

Presenters who submit abstracts by December 8, 2017 will qualify for discounted Early Bird Registration rates, so if you are considering joining us, please send in your abstract early. Kobe, part of the greater Kansai region, is also a convenient base from which to explore Japan and Japanese culture, so if you can, plan your schedule to arrive early or stay after the conference concludes.

We look forward to welcoming you to ACLL2018 in Kobe, Japan.

Best regards,

The ACLL2018 Organising Committee

Professor Ted O'Neill, Gakushuin University, Japan
Professor Steve Cornwell, Osaka Jogakuin University, Japan

***Conference Theme: "Surviving and Thriving: Education in Times of Change"

In 2017, IAFOR education conferences in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America have brought together delegates from around the world to consider the theme of "Educating for Change" from a variety of different perspectives and approaches, taking full advantage of the international make-up of the attendees and the huge diversity of experiences. A recurring theme throughout the conferences was the reference to the future, be it immediate or longer term, as being uncertain; the natural resilience and optimism was counterbalanced by both apprehension; with hope also came fear.

In this period of great global political and economic instability, rising inequality and social unrest, the role of education within society has never been more important, but never more vulnerable. This brings us to our conference theme for 2018, which references these inherent vulnerabilities in both educational systems and the individual students and teachers, as well as the necessary resilience needed to not only survive, but also thrive.

How do we teachers, administrators and policymakers adopt and adapt to change outside our control? How do we nurture and encourage positive change, through the excitement of the imagination, innovation and creativity? How can technologies be better used to help us teach, and to help students learn? How do we sustain and manage change? How can we react positively to negative change? How can we, our institutions and our students survive and thrive in these times of change?

The European Conference on Arts & Humanities (ECAH2018)

Conference Theme - "Fearful Futures"

We have reached a moment in international history that is one of potential paradigm shift. It is a moment when a problematic, but at least blandly progressivist, pro-multiculturalist movement toward "cosmopolitanism" (as Kwame Anthony Appiah might use the term) is being threatened by a far more destructive and potentially genocidal ethno-nationalism, the ferocity of which is fuelled by economic disparity, religious intolerance and retrograde ideologies regarding gender, race and sexuality. The possible global futures we face are fearful, indeed, and in an era of information and disinformation, fake news, and hysterical polemic, are sometimes made out to be inevitable.

In this context, the arts, humanities, media and cultural studies play an important role in tracing the genealogy of the present moment, documenting it, and charting different paths forward, inviting such questions as how does culture replicate itself (or critically engage itself) in the classroom, in literature, in social media, in film, in the visual and theatrical arts, in the family, and among peer groups? How do we rise to the challenge of articulating a notion of human rights that also respects cultural difference? How do cultural representations of the environment abet or challenge the forces driving climate change? What are the roles and responsibilities of the individual activist as teacher, writer, artist, social scientist and community member? What are the responsibilities of both traditional and non-traditional media? How do we make sense of the ideologies driving hatred and intolerance, and posit different models of social engagement and organisation? Looking to the past, what do we learn about the challenges of today?

This international and interdisciplinary conference will bring together a range of academics, independent researchers, artists and activists to explore the challenges that we face in the twenty-first century. In the hackneyed While we have every right to fear the future, we also have agency in creating that future. Can we commit to a cosmopolitanism that celebrates difference and that challenges social inequity? On our ability to answer to that question affirmatively likely hangs our very survival.

The organisers encourage submissions that approach the conference theme from a variety of perspectives. However, the submission of other topics for consideration is welcome and we also encourage sessions within and across a variety of interdisciplinary and theoretical perspectives.

The European Conference on Arts & Humanities 2018 (ECAH2018) will be held alongside The European Conference on Media, Communication & Film 2018 (EuroMedia2018). Registration for either conference will allow delegates to attend sessions in the other.

In conjunction with our Global Partners, including the University of Sussex and Birkbeck, University of London, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2018.

The European Conference on the Social Sciences (ECSS2018)

Conference Theme – "Surviving and Thriving: In Pursuit of a Sustainable World"

Religious, cultural and societal fractures have seen rises in authoritarianism and nationalism across the world, and threats and perceived threats have been used to justify the stifling and marginalisation of voices of opposition and dissent. Hard-won progress and freedoms are being questioned and undermined, and questions of peace, security and human security abound. In this period of great global social, economic, political and environmental instability, the future is for many a place of great uncertainty and fear.

However, in any period of great change, and undoubted challenge, there is also a great opportunity to harness and nurture these forces. The future is not yet written, and the powerful heuristic of sustainability has become a reality in many areas, where human creativity, imagination and technological advances have helped to make the world a better place. From small individual initiatives within families, communities and places of work, to the larger and more long-term development initiatives of governments and supranational institutions, exemplified by the UN's 2030 goals, human resourcefulness is being used in pursuit of the common goal of a sustainable world.

The European Conference on the Social Sciences 2018 (ECSS2018) is a multidisciplinary conference held concurrently with The European Conference on Sustainability, Energy & the Environment 2018 (ECSEE2018). Keynote, Featured and Spotlight Speakers will provide a variety of perspectives from different academic and professional backgrounds. Registration for either of these conferences permits attendance in both.

In conjunction with our Global Partners, including the University of Sussex and Birkbeck, University of London, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2018.

Indigenous Communities, Indigenous Spaces: Tradition and Change in a Globalising World

Indigenous Communities, Indigenous Spaces: Tradition and Change in a Globalising World
1-5 October 2018, Orchid Island/Pongso no Tao, Taiwan
http://www.islanddynamics.org/indigenouscommunities.html

The long, uneven retreat of empire in the post-World War II era has replaced colonies with a profusion of new states, autonomous units, and overseas territories of various kinds. Despite hopes that territorial strategies, legal recognition, special privileges, and preferential policies would 'solve' the Indigenous 'problem', tensions between colonisers and colonised remain. As globalised discourses of economic advantage, international aggression, international development, and transnational corporate activity grow in power and complexity, people are engaging with indigeneity and identifying as Indigenous in new ways.

If both bottom-up and top-down efforts to overcome the legacy of colonialism are proving problematic, it might in part be because the dialogue often remains restricted to 'coloniser' and 'colonised', limited to relations between Indigenous peoples and the metropolitan state – even though straightforward notions of statehood, sovereignty, and territoriality now seem less relevant by the day. In the process of such dynamics, people become enmeshed in ever-wider fields of power and inequality.

This international conference explores the connection between Indigenous communities and Indigenous spaces in an age when the very conceptions of space, place, and territory are undergoing rapid change due to globalisation. Is the Indigenous only found in and through place, or can we envision non-situated and deterritorialised indigeneities? Can Indigenous rights and livelihoods be asserted without simultaneously reinforcing, apologising to, or playing by the rules of the coloniality?

This conference considers tradition and change in the context of the Indigenous spaces in which lives are lived and in which globalisation occurs: local communities and connections across continents, sacred sites and secular spaces, Indigenous villages and Indigenous cities, traditional territories and political spaces within and beyond the state. Through this spatially sensitive approach to indigeneity, we consider topics such as:
- strategies for Indigenous empowerment
- sense of place and space
- visions of Indigenous futures
- relations between Indigenous peoples and state and non-state actors
- maintenance of tradition in times of change
- decolonising methodologies
- language, translation, and rewriting indigeneity
- the role of the sacred in the Information Age.

About Pongso no Tao: Pongso no Tao (also called Orchid Island or Lanyu) is a small, mountainous island far off Taiwan's southeast coast. Pongso no Tao has a population of around 4000 and is the homeland of the Tao, an Austronesian people and one of the 'Aboriginal' or 'Indigenous' tribes of Taiwan. Geographically separate from and peripheral to the main island of Taiwan, the Tao have retained many traditional practices from the precolonial period. Nevertheless, first Taiwanese and now global culture, economics, and politics are changing what it means to be a member of the Tao community and what the island of Pongso no Tao and its surrounding seas mean to the Tao themselves.

About the conference: On 1 October, delegates will travel from Taipei to Pongso no Tao, returning again on 5 October. On 2-4 October, delegates will explore the island, meet community members, and participate in discussions and presentations. This is both an academic conference and a practically oriented workshop. Activities in Taipei will also be planned for 6-7 October.

How to make a presentation: This conference will bring together academic researchers and representatives of Indigenous communities from around the globe. Because the conference consists of workshops, discussions, and presentations, it is possible to attend the conference without submitting a proposal for a formal presentation. Presentations are welcome on all aspects of the conference theme of Indigenous communities and Indigenous spaces. Presentations last 15 minutes and will be followed by around 5 minutes' question time. The deadline for abstracts is 30 November 2017. (Later abstracts may be accepted if there is room available at the conference, but people who submit an abstract prior to the deadline will have the first opportunity to reserve a spot and to take advantage of the early registration rate.) You can submit your abstract here: http://www.islanddynamics.org/indigenouscommunities/cfp.html
The deadline for early registration is 31 January 2018.

To learn more about the conference, please visit the website (http://www.islanddynamics.org/indigenouscommunities.html) or contact convenor Adam Grydehøj (agrydehoj@islanddynamics.org).

This conference is a collaboration of: The Community of Pongso no Tao; Island Dynamics; National Taiwan Normal University's Department of Geography & Graduate Institute of Environmental Education; Ilisimatusarfik/University of Greenland's Department of Social Sciences; RMIT University's Global, Urban and Social Studies & Centre for Global Research

The European Conference on Education (ECE2018)

Conference Theme - "Surviving and Thriving: Education in Times of Change"

This conference, part of IAFOR's global conference series on education in its broadest sense, brings together teachers, researchers and distinguished professors from around the world to share their insights. The goal is to broaden awareness of different contexts in the pursuit of synergies and solutions. We look forward to your active participation in this vital field of future-oriented academic activity of The International Academic Forum.

The European Conference on Education 2018 (ECE2018) will be held alongside The European Conference on Language Learning 2018 (ECLL2018). Registration for either conference will allow delegates to attend sessions in the other.

In conjunction with our Global Partners, including the University of Sussex and Birkbeck, University of London, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2018.
