New academic opportunities @ UNCTAD Virtual Institute - Student special!

Dear Vi friends,

I am pleased to forward the following academic offers proposed by members and partners of the Virtual Institute network. I hope you find them of interest.

EXTENDED DEADLINE - March 14
How sustainable is your thesis?
The LATN network will award one prize of USD 2000 and two of USD 1500 to three post-graduate theses (Masters and/or PhD) dealing with themes of sustainability and green growth. Two special mentions of USD 500 will also be awarded.

LATN welcomes theoretical, empirical and comparative work, or case studies, that seek to analyze and provide innovative responses to challenges created by sustainability for Latin American countries, from the economic and social/institutional perspectives. The work must be original and individual, and written in Spanish, English or Portuguese.

Interested students must submit their entries in PDF format to redlatn@redlatn.org by March 14. Eligible theses must be finalized by 15 December 2014.

Fellowships available for 2014-2015 Master's in Mauritius - Deadline April 30

Vi core member, the University of Mauritius, invites applications for the 2014-15 edition of its Master Programme in Social Protection Financing. The one-year, full-time programme is designed to provide students with the economic and business management tools required to contribute to the organization and evolution of social welfare programmes.

The International Development Research Centre will award fellowships covering transportation, tuition, medical insurance and some living costs to eligible candidates from sub-Saharan African countries selected to participate in the programme.

A maximum of 30 students will be accepted; priority will be given to serving officials from African social security institutions and ministries (managers, actuaries, financial and policy analysts), and from organisations representing African workers and employers. Other applicants will be considered if space permits.

Applications must be submitted no later than April 30. For more information, contact: contactus@uomtrust.ac.mu.

The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) invites post-graduate students to send innovative contributions to its new Young Scholars Think Piece Series. The Series aims to provide promising young researchers with an opportunity to present their research on a wider platform than is possible within a university setting, thereby contributing to the diversity of ideas within the development community.

The first edition welcomes think pieces of up to 2,000 words that speak to issues relevant to social development in mineral-rich contexts and/or related to extractive industries.

Selected scholars will be published on the UNRISD website, get feedback from its social development experts, connect with its network of academics, policy makers and civil society activists, and be recognized as a contributing scholar to United Nations research on social development.

Deadline for submissions is March 21. For more information, contact info@unrisd.org.

The World Trade Organization will award CHF 5000 to the winner of this year's WTO Essay Award for Young Economists. The award will be announced at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group, and the winning essay will be published in the WTO Working Paper Series.

The paper, not to exceed 15,000 words, must address issues related to trade policy and international trade cooperation. Author(s) of the paper must possess or be engaged in the completion of a PhD degree and, if over 30 years of age, be no more than two years past a PhD defence.

Essays and author(s) CVs must be submitted to essay.award@wto.org by June 1.

Call for Papers @ THE INSTITUTE OF CHINESE STUDIES, DELHI

CALL FOR PAPERS

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM:

100 YEARS AFTER THE SIMLA CONFERENCE- 1913-14

ORGANISED BY

THE INSTITUTE OF CHINESE STUDIES, DELHI

IN COLLABORATION WITH

THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDY, SHIMLA

TO BE HELD ON 06-07 JUNE 2014 AT SHIMLA

CONCEPT NOTE

During the last hundred years the “Simla Conference” (06 Oct 1913-03 July 1914) has had and continues to have a major impact on the geo-strategic, history and sociology of the region. The Conference amongst the British, Chinese and Tibetan plenipotentiaries was convened to consider the status and boundaries of Tibet vis-à-vis China and India. On 14 April 1914, a map delineating the McMahon line as the border between India and Tibet and the Irrawaddy-Salween line between Outer and Inner Tibet was signed by the British and Tibetan representatives and was initialed, but not signed by Ivan Chen, the Chinese plenipotentiary. Subsequent efforts by the British failed to resolve this issue.

However, over the decades, many more layers have been added over the rigid and frozen positions of the parties involved. The rugged Himalayas only broken by broad valleys have tended to inhibit communications in the past. As a result the Himalayan region is complex, with several traditions prospering in isolation by themselves. The closure of border in 1959 had a significant effect on the political, economic, religious and social life of the Himalayan people.

An objective reflection on these and related issues would hopefully yield new insights and perspectives. We also now have the benefit of the experiences of negotiations among the respective parties over the years. The people in the Himalayas have lived in different political systems during these decades. The aim of the Symposium is to encourage scholarly discussions to evolve fresh approaches on the complex boundary and other related issues, which have evaded resolution. This will be done in a holistic way to include examination of the social, cultural and economic life of people living in the affected border regions. The two-day Symposium at the same historic locale would focus on the following broad themes:-

(a) Spaces and Boundaries.

(b) People and Communities.

(c) State and Geopolitics.

Central East European Economies: Trade, Development and Structural Change in the Region

Central East European Economies: Trade, Development and Structural Change in the Region

Panel organized by: Anca Voicu, Rollins College, Florida, USA

(As part of the Third Euroacademia International Conference ‘Re-Inventing Eastern Europe’ to be held in Berlin, Germany, 28-29 March 2014)

Deadline for paper proposals: 25 February 2014

Panel Description:

Among the major economic developments of the past two decades, the transition of the former centrally planned economies of Central East Europe (CEE) to market-driven economies has received great interest from economists, academics and policy makers around the world. One intriguing aspect of this transition is the diversity of the scenarios undertaken by individual countries in reforming their economies, yet remaining within the common framework of mainstream economic policy. There is strong evidence that trade is the primary engine for the growth experienced by these economies and, of the transition process itself and, furthermore, it is central to the current process of development and deeper integration of these economies into the European Union.

This panel focuses on the integration process of the CEE economies into the European Union, their outstanding economic performance following accession, the significant challenges faced since the global financial crisis of 2008 as well as their road to economic recovery.

The research presented in this panel looks initially at the process of economic integration of the CEE countries through trade; however, it emphasizes the broader aspects of structural change and economic development, caused by trade, foreign direct investment and technology transfer. It is predominantly concerned with the implications that European and intra-CEE trade has had for structural transformation and economic dynamics.

A distinct feature of our panel, therefore, is that the discussion moves beyond the core 'trade and growth' framework to look at technological progress, foreign investment and structural change in the CEE region.

The specific issues that represent the focus of this panel are the following:
~ Trade, and its importance, as the main engine for the growth of the economies of the CEE region.
~ EU membership and its importance in fostering and facilitating economic change including growth, reducing corruption, high quality governance, as well as increasing the living standards for CEE nations.
~ The role of history and culture in explaining the current economic standing of the CEE economies as well as their contribution in shaping their future
~ The role of FDI in improving technological structures and accelerating growth in the CEE economies.
~ The role and importance of institutions in the context of transition and post accession into the EU.
~ The vulnerabilities present in the region and policy measures to overcome them.

Contributions explaining the CEE countries trade performance and potential are welcome. Case studies illustrating the idea of path dependency in the economy, with policy approaches taken by various countries and their implications for economic growth and development, are strongly encouraged.

If interested in participating, please send a maximum 300 words abstract together with the details of your affiliation until 25th of February 2014 simultaneously at avoicu@rollins.edu and application@euroacademia.eu
