*Perspective*

Since 1990's women have been identified as key agent of sustainable development. Women's equality & empowerment are seen as central for holistic approach towards establishing new patterns, processes & policies for the sustainable development. The most popular version of empowerment provides ample room for participation in decision making and implementation of development programmes by women. Women's participation at grassroots level is increasingly recognised as crucial to the betterment of women. Hence, the major thrust as well as focus of development theory and practice during the last couple of decades has been on Women's participation and empowerment. Also, the World Bank has suggested that empowerment of women should be a key aspect of all social development programmes (World Bank
2001). Millennium Development Goal (2008) also considered gender equality and women empowerment as one of the major development goal.

Microfinance is globally recognised as an effective instrument to address poverty and women empowerment which are key to rural development. Microfinance is not a mere financial instrument but a powerful tool for development to address multiple dimensions of poverty by addressing the issue of health, education, gender and environment. The experience across India and other countries has shown a robust potential of Microfinance to integrate with the development issues thereby significantly impacting the lives of poor.

In this perspective, objective of the proposed seminar is to provide a common platform for academicians, group members, practioner and policy makers to discuss the issues and challenges of microfinance in fosteringwomen empowerment ad rural development.
