Call:

Every region of the world has its particular cultural, social and artistic heritage. In urban centres this is at its most pronounced. The city, as we see it today, results from a history of planning initiatives, artistic visions, social forces and engineering projects. In thinking about its future, we are obliged to build on its past and its present: its varied buildings and urban plans; its artistic heritage and craft traditions; its design vernaculars and regional practices; its neighborhood bonds and community ties; its economic conditions and social norms, and more. The city, then, is a living question: past, present and future.

When thinking about the future of specific cities we are also obliged to think more broadly - to understand the local and the global context in which we live: the transnational forces of globalization, the universal concern for sustainability; and the worldwide trends of consumerist cultures etc. In this regard too, the city is a complex issue: a question of specific responses to global issues.

The host city of this event, Barcelona, and by extension the whole region of Catalonia, is a perfect example of this. A place of cultural identity; a site of architectural masterworks; a centre of visionary urbanism; and a place of artistic creation over centuries, it is also a place of contestation. Alongside its celebrated public art is unaffordable housing; next to its tourist sites are pockets of industrial decline; alongside its cultural heritage are forces of political and social unrest. In celebrating and conserving the history and present of the place, there is a need to plan a future that is fair, just, open and, in the final analysis, sustainable.

In addressing the questions and issues raised by the region, this conference opens debates relevant to cities the world over. Across the Mediterranean, issues of sustainable futures are paramount. In Europe more widely, the gentrification of traditional neighborhoods is endemic. In North America and Australasia, the respect for Indigenous cultures and crafts is urgently needed. In Africa and Asia, how to sustainably design for growth in existing contexts is a pressing problem. In Latin America and the Middle-East, development that avoids the homogenizing forces of globalization is vital. In these contexts this conference argues that these interchangeable global issues are key to our pasts, but also to our sustainable futures.

2023 Open Distance and e-Learning Hybrid Conference

Conference: 15-17 August 2023
Emperors Palace, South Africa

CONFERENCE

ODeL in the Global South: Opportunities in times of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA)

The term "uncertainty" will likely be mentioned in the response when you ask any 21st-century citizen what they believe to be the defining aspect of modern society.

While people and institutions generally dislike uncertainty because it places obstacles in the way of planning and shrinks comfort zones, uncertainty has a positive side too: It encourages creativity, flexibility, and a wider view of possibilities.

Uncertainty has the ability to bring forth positive outcomes, and the University of South Africa (Unisa) has incorporated these possibilities into the theme it chose for the 2023 Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) Hybrid Conference.

Taking place from 15 to 17 August 2023 both virtually and in-person at Emperors Palace, near OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng, the conference explores the theme, "ODeL in the Global South: Opportunities in times of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA)".

Given the scope and unpredictability of institutional and societal change in recent years, the conference theme is likely to resonate with ODeL scholars and researchers in South Africa, the rest of Africa, and beyond.

Join keynote speakers and a host of local and international panellists as they debate this important theme.

- Romeela Mohee, Professor and Higher Education Commissioner of Mauritius
- George Siemens, Professor and Director of the Center for Change and Complexity in Learning (C3L) at the University of South Australia, also a Professor of Practice in Psychology at the University of Texas, Arlington, administering the Master of Science in Learning Analytics
- Jenny Glennie, Founding Director, South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE), South Africa
- Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, Associate Provost and North Star Distinguished Professor at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, United States of America

This academic conference, which will be preceded by pre-conference workshops on 14 August 2023, will give established and upcoming ODeL scholars and researchers the opportunity to explore innovative approaches to conducting teaching, learning, research, and community engagement in a complex and frequently turbulent environment.

Scholars interested in presenting papers at the Unisa 2023 ODeL Hybrid Conference should take note of the timelines for submitting proposals. There are separate deadlines for proposals for the main conference, the pre-conference workshops, and the ODeL Postgraduate Student Consortium. Details of the key dates and a list of possible topics to consider can be found on the website. Speakers and delegates from all over the world will be attending, making the conference an excellent vehicle for
networking in the ODeL field.

Your hosts are Unisa's Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation Portfolio and the UNESCO Chair on Open Distance Learning.

We look forward to your contribution as, together, we explore the opportunities that lie ahead for ODeL in the Global South in times of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

Why should you attend this conference?

This conference is suited to all academic practitioners, scholars, researchers, and students who are interested in open, distance, online, and e-Learning.

CALL

Today, the societies, cultures, and the places in which we live and work are increasingly intricate phenomena. Globalization eradicates spatial boundaries to business; gentrification involves social and political pressure; pandemics are never site specific or confined to the past. Architecture and urban design are global endeavors; sustainability requires material and political action; and patterns of criminality are not placed bound. Similarly, the need for education and housing are universal; and land rights are essential legal tools for First Nations and communities everywhere.

Within this mode of thinking, when we discuss sustainability we must consider local planning and global politics. When we speak about smart cities, we are obliged to consider cyber security and civil rights. When we discuss law and human rights, we cannot ignore economic or social policy. Equally, when we think about food production and consumption, we must consider transportation costs, public health, and more.

In reading livability as an aggregate of forces, this conference does not see 'the city' as primarily a physical and designed entity. On the contrary, it posits 'the livable city' as a 'construct' involving a plethora of agendas and disciplines.

As an inherently interdisciplinary conference, Livable Cities - London explores cities as a material and immaterial question - as an interplay of forces including, but not limited to: politics, sociological trends, cultural tendencies, media representations, economic policy, design and planning methods, the provision of public services, and more.

By juxtaposing, comparing and sharing work in various fields, it is expected that a broader and richer picture will emerge regarding what makes the places we inhabit more, or less, livable.

Part of the Focus on Pedagogy Series

CALL:

Today, education is often defined as hybrid. Hybrid delivery in-class and online. Mixed theories of teaching and practice. Cross-disciplinary courses and programs. Alternative modes of enquiry. Community and student engagement. Concepts of explorative learning. Multicultural perspectives on subjects. The combined arts and sciences of STEAM – to name but a few. The same hybridity is true of life and work. We value a work-life balance. We seek self fulfilment in professional contexts. We see education as continual through professional development and life-long learning.

In this context, education plays many roles, and serves many people and purposes. It takes on many forms. In embracing this hybridity, the Learning. Life. Work. conference seeks to explore the numerous ways education morphs and blurs - through varied methodologies across a multitude of disciplines, geographies, and mind sets. As such it welcomes perspectives from the arts and humanities, design and media studies, science and technology, education and training, health and the social sciences.

In this diversity, the event reflects the place and institution in which it is set: the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. A city famous for its counter culture, history of gay rights, its Hispanic heritage, Asian diaspora and its cutting edge arts scene. It is a place renowned for alternative models of thought. Home to the first free public school on California, San Francisco has also spearheaded various education initiatives in United States. It implemented the Indian Education Program in the 1970s, supporting Native American communities. It led in the adaption of the Beacon Initiative to use schools for community needs, and it is home to one of the largest publicly funded university systems in the United States.

Welcoming delegates from locations across the world to consider the future hybridities of teaching and learning, we aim to share perspectives and disseminate best practices. We look to educators, students, artists, theorists, and industry professionals. We hope to share initiatives, programs, and projects.

Mysteries and Histories: A Transdisciplinary Conference

Mysteries and Histories: A Transdisciplinary Conference
24th to 25th June 2023
The historic "Court House" in Martock, Somerset, UK

Keynote speakers: Renowned writers Prof. Fiona Sampson and Peter Salmon

Web address: https://labrc.co.uk/2023/03/04/mysteries-and-histories/
Sponsored by: London Arts-Based Research Centre

This conference invites scholars, creatives, writers, graduate students, and other enthusiasts of history and/or mystery writing to explore and discuss special topics in history and the role of history in writing mystery fiction and non-fiction.

Call for Papers

Countless historical enigmas remain unsolved to this day and inspire so much mystery writing - think of the Turin Shroud, the Stonehenge megaliths, the pyramids and pharaohs of Egypt, Atlantis, the Bermuda Triangle and others. Mystery writers hope to discover or unlock these long-buried historical secrets while researching their novels. With themes ranging from Egyptology, medieval alchemy, lost paintings, wars, scientific discoveries and any other significant moments from the distant past, many popular mysteries have taken the literary world by storm and ignited an interest in history.

There is an intimate relationship between history and mystery writing.

The London Centre for Arts-Based Research is now accepting proposals for papers and panels for its first "Mysteries and Histories" conference, to take place at The Court House Residency in Martock, Somerset, a marvelous location which in itself is rich with history and mysteries!

We welcome 15-minute presentations (academic and/or creative) that reflect this theme.

The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars, creatives, bookworms, writers, postgraduate students, and other professionals to explore and discuss the relationship between history and mystery writing.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

- Research in history
- Mysteries in audiobooks
- Humour in mysteries and historical fiction
- Time travel in mystery writing
- Whodunits in historical settings
- Biographical mysteries
- Paranormal and supernatural elements in histories and mystery fiction
- History/mystery writing for the screen and theatre
- "Truth" in historical non-fiction
- Famous "mystery" historical figures and their adaptation in contemporary writing
- Special themes in historical mysteries
- The writing process (of mystery writing, historical fiction, and historical nonfiction)
- Research and data collection for creative writers (forensics, police, psychology etc.)
- Psychological thrillers
- Pop mysteries
- Literary classics in mystery and detective fiction
- Representations of detectives and other significant characters in mystery writing
- Film adaptations of both mystery and historical fiction
- The cozy murder mystery (and other subgenres of detective fiction)
- The mind in writer and/or reader mode (for historical mysteries)
- Latest trends in detective fiction/historical fiction
- Art and history in mystery writing

Presenters can share papers and/or creative work, as we highly encourage arts-based research. You will find the abstract form on:
https://labrc.co.uk/2023/03/04/mysteries-and-histories/
Please fill out the abstract form by May 20, 2023 and send it to info@labrc.co.uk

CALL:

The United Nations Human Rights and Habitat programmes connect how we live, to where we live. The association is premised on an understanding of cultures, communities and society through the lens of place. It sees them as inherently interlinked, and mutually reinforcing. Examining this liminal state, the Local Cultures - Global Spaces conference questions this idea as it appears at the intersection of cultural studies, sociology, human geography, architecture and urban planning.

It responds to debates around community networks and cultural traditions as independent of location. It addresses readings of the built environment as an isolated phenomena - as a series of constructed objects in, of, and for, themselves. Conversely, it acknowledges that how we live can be seen as inseparable from our built environments - our buildings, villages, towns and cities. In such readings, place may be defined as deterministic - as a central player influencing actions, and even identity. Positioning itself somewhere between these positions, Local Cultures - Global Spaces explores readings of societies and place as hybrid - as byproducts of the conflicting social, cultural and economic forces shaping our lives in multiple spheres.

If we take the city as a case in point, it can be critiqued as a site of displacement, economic inequity, gender marginalization and social exclusion. Viewed through such lenses, architecture, urban design and development policy simply ingrain the status quo. By contrast, for those celebrating cultural consumption, the city is a site for exchange - of ideas, experiences, identities, money, and more. Within this mix, the design the cities is central to the riches of globalization. It is where we find the Creative Class of Richard Florida, and where we enjoy the fruits of human production: cultural buildings, public spaces and the IT networks of the 'smart city.'

-

In addressing questions of social and built environment theory and practice, then, this conference is interested in a diversity of ideas. From the social sciences, themes of interest may include cultural geographies, late Capitalism spatially manifest, and critiques of community and social justice, a la Lefevre and Harvey. In terms of architectural and urban design, the conference sees these concerns as reflected in participatory approaches to housing, examinations of queer space, Critical Regionalism, placemaking, and questions of race and planning, to name but a few.
