USA Florida State University, Tallahassee. http://architecturemps.com/florida/ Themes: Architecture, Interiors, Product Design Health, Education THE CITY AND COMPLEXITY - Full Call: 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Jane Jacobs' The Economy of Cities. It came a decade after her seminal work, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, and heralded a new age in thinking about the city. The city would no longer be a question of design and planning in isolation. From the early 1970s onwards, it would be seen as a complex interdisciplinary phenomenon. The first years of the 1970s saw the introduction of a whole series of notions that would mutually inform our reading of the metropolis: social justice and the city, sustainability, defensible space, and urban centres as sites of public health. It saw the emergence of concepts such as the global city, urban economics, the post-industrial society and the cultural city. From art, design and cultural perspectives, post-modernism would critique of the whole modernist project. Five decades after complexity theory was first applied to our reading of the city, this conference revisits its consequences. It reconsiders the city as an adaptive, self-organising and unpredictable system of interconnecting interventions, forces and perspectives. It asks how these competing and mutually reinforcing factors came into play and how they operate today. It questions how the city has been, and continues to be, informed by the practices of multiple disciplines. Formats: The conference welcomes case studies; design proposals, research projects, investigative papers and theoretical considerations in various formats allowing people to write a paper, attend in person or present via film and have their presentation permanently available via the AMPS Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyfWS4KkYSauAaTV2pjrQlQ Pre-recorded video (20 minutes) | Conference Presentations (20 minutes) | Written Papers (3,000 words) * Publishers include: Routledge Taylor&Francis, Intellect Books, Vernon Press, Cambridge Scholar Publishing, Libri Publishing and UCL Press. The End of Life Experience: 3rd Global Interdisciplinary Conference
The End of Life Experience 3rd Global Interdisciplinary Conference Saturday 4th April 2020 - Sunday 5th April 2020 Lisbon, Portugal This global inclusive interdisciplinary conference explores dying and death and the ways culture impacts care for the dying, the overall experience of dying and ways the dead are remembered. Over the past four decades, scholarship in thanatology and palliative care has increased dramatically. Our conversations seek a broad array of perspectives that explore, analyse, and/or interpret the myriad interrelations and interactions that exist between death and culture. Culture not only presents and portrays ideas about "a good death" and norms that seek to achieve it, it also operates as both a vehicle and medium through which meaning about death is communicated and understood. Sadly, too, culture sometimes facilitates death through violence. A key emphasis in this year's conference will be an exploration of the connections between health care systems, caregivers, and matters of public policy that serve those at the end-of-life. To that end, we will address questions such as: How might health care systems integrate empathic, patient-centred design principles across the entire spectrum of the end of life experience? How might new technologies offer new propositions for models of care? How do options such as Physician Aid in Dying (sometimes called Physician Assisted Dying) factor into contemporary dying trajectories, and how best might we consider the quality vs. quantity (years) balance? How might cultural, spiritual and traditional belief systems and practices more fully empower our relationship with mortality, both in personal and professional settings? How are cultural attitudes toward death changing? How is serious illness and dying depicted across various artistic and media platforms? The conference welcomes all those who endeavour to address questions such as these, along with people engaged in analysing, re-imagining and/or improving end of life experience with a view to forming an innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further research and collaboration. Augmenting our rich conversations, our ethos aspires to create relationships and on-going dialogues that re-envision patient-centred care. Key Topics Continuing with the same momentum established from the previous two meetings, we invite presentations from caregivers, artists, therapists, theologians, philosophers, thought leaders, stake holders, medical professionals, entrepreneurs, designers, artists, musicians, patients, activists, journalists, policy makers, developers, technologists, and academics from across these and other disciplines that respond to or innovatively (re-)frame any of the following additional core conference themes listed below: 1: Health Care Systems: Patients, Staff, and Institutions ~ Modern Health Care Delivery Systems and Care for the Dying ~ Palliative Care ~ Hospice ~ Elder Care/Ageing in Place Models ~ Trauma and Emergency Care ~ Nursing Homes/Skilled Facilities/Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs)/Assisted Living ~ Clinical Competencies in Pain Management and Symptom Control ~ Measurements, Incentives, Regulatory Statutes, and Recommendations ~ Continuity of Care Across Treatment Settings ~ Interdisciplinary Care 2: The Caregiver-Patient Relationship ~ Caregiver's (Physician's?) Obligations and Virtues ~ Medical Paternalism and Respect for the Patient, Autonomy ~ Truth-Telling/Truth-Hearing ~ Informed Consent ~ Medicine in Multicultural Societies ~ Contested Therapies Within the Physician-Patient Relationship ~ Conflicts of Interest; Problems of Conscience ~ Caregiver Stress/Caregiver Burnout/Compassion Fatigue ~ Being With Someone Who Is Dying ~ Assessment Challenges/Barriers 3: End-of-Life Issues and Decisions ~ Defining Death ~ Organ Transplantation and Organ Donation ~ The Interplay of Ethical Meta-Principles at the End of Life ~ Nonmaleficence ~ Beneficence ~ Autonomy ~ Death Anxiety ~ Choosing Death ~ Advance Directives/Advance Planning/Physician Order for Life-Sustaining Treatments (POLST)/Do Not Resuscitate ~ Considering End-of-Life Issues and Decisions and Legislation 4: Relationships Between Death and Culture ~ Death and the internet ~ Death and social media ~ Death and music ~ Death in literature ~ Death in film ~ Death and broadcast media ~ Death and athletics ~ Death in comic books ~ Death and television ~ Death and radio ~ Death and print media ~ Death and popular art / architecture ~ Death and advertising ~ Death and consumerism What To Send The aim of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, problem-solving sessions, case studies, panels, q&a's, round-tables etc. Creative responses to the subject, such as poetry/prose, short film screenings/original drama, installations and alternative presentation styles that engage the audience and foster debate are particularly encouraged. Please feel free to put forward proposals that you think will get the message across, in whatever form. At the end of the conference we will be exploring ways in which we can develop the discussions and dialogues in new and sustainable inclusive interdisciplinary directions, including research, workshops, publications, public interest days, associations, developing courses etc which will help us make sense of the topics discussed during the meeting. 300 word proposals, presentations, abstracts and other forms of contribution and participation should be submitted by Friday 8th November 2019. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chairs. All submissions will be at least double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Team, The Development Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed. You will be notified of the panel's decision by Friday 22nd November 2019. If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 21st February 2020. Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order: a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in the programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) type of proposal e.g. paper presentation, workshop, panel, film, performance, etc, f) body of proposal, g) up to 10 keywords. A fresh, friendly, dynamic format – at Progressive Connexions we are dedicated to breaking away from the stuffy, old-fashion conference formats, where endless presentations are read aloud off PowerPoints. We work to bring you an interactive format, where exchange of experience and information is alternated with captivating workshops, engaging debates and round tables, time set aside for getting to know each other and for discussing common future projects and initiatives, all in a warm, relaxed, egalitarian atmosphere. A chance to network with international professionals – the beauty of our interdisciplinary events is that they bring together professionals from all over the world and from various fields of activity, all joined together by a shared passion. Not only will the exchange of experience, knowledge and stories be extremely valuable in itself, but we seek to create lasting, ever-growing communities around our projects, which will become a valuable resource for those belonging to them. A chance to be part of constructing change – There is only one thing we love as much as promoting knowledge: promoting real, lasting social change by encouraging our participants to take collective action, under whichever form is most suited to their needs and expertise (policy proposals, measuring instruments, research projects, educational materials, etc.) We will support all such actions in the aftermath of the event as well, providing a platform for further discussions, advice from the experts on our Project Advisory Team and various other tools and intellectual resources, as needed. An opportunity to discuss things that matter to you – Our events are not only about discussing how things work in the respective field, but also about how people work in that field – what are the struggles, problems and solutions professionals have found in their line of work, what are the areas where better communication among specialists is needed and how the interdisciplinary approach can help bridge those gaps and help provide answers to questions from specific areas of activity. An unforgettable experience – When participating in a Progressive Connexions event, there is a good chance you will make some long-time friends. Supernatural Connections: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference
Supernatural Connections An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference Saturday 4th April 2020 to Sunday 5th April 2020 Lisbon, Portugal As a constant and chilling presence in individual lives and the popular imagination, the supernatural, as a cultural phenomenon, is prone to repeated revivals and resurrections. Like some uncanny revenant, the supernatural re-emerges at crucial historical moments, often transforming to reflect the concerns of its epoch. Recent times have seen a sharp rise in occult practice amongst millennials, many of whom have rejected more traditional spiritual systems in favour of Wicca, witchcraft and astrology. The past two decades have also witnessed a proliferation of supernatural fiction, encompassing everything from populist works like Supernatural (2005 – present), Twilight (2008-2012), The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018 – present) and Siempre Bruja (2019) to critically-acclaimed texts like The Babadook (2014), The Witch (2015) Under the Shadow (2016) and Suspiria (2018). The reawakening of interest in the supernatural poses a wealth of questions about why the occult has once again seized hold of the popular imagination, while, at the same time, gesturing backwards to earlier eruptions of supernaturalism (witch trials, outbreaks of demonic possession, the nineteenth-century vogue for Spiritualism, the New-Age occultism of the 1960s and '70s). But what does the current preoccupation with the supernatural say about contemporary societies, particularly in relation to issues of gender, sexuality and identity, socio-political anxieties, historical and personal trauma? Why does the supernatural provide such a potent vehicle for grappling with those issues? Why are some expressions of the supernatural more culturally acceptable than others? To what extent does the supernatural play a positive role in society, and to what extent does it provide a convenient scapegoat for the real-world dark impulses of human beings? The Supernatural Connections conference seeks to provide a platform for exploring these questions from inclusive interdisciplinary perspectives by opening up new avenues of research and new conversations about the supernatural through papers, performances and panels focusing on any aspect of this complex, multifaceted topic with a view to forming an innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further research and collaboration. The conference organisers are particularly interested in incorporating papers/ presentations from a diverse range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, literary and cultural studies, film studies, theology, psychology, the social and natural sciences, history, philosophy, sociology, education and anthropology. We also enthusiastically welcome submissions from practitioners, artists, writers, curators and others. Key Topics Potential topics may address any of the following topics; however, we are open to any submission that investigates the supernatural: - Critiques and defences of the supernatural and related belief systems - Comparisons between contemporary and historical understandings of the supernatural - How creative practice shapes our perception of the supernatural (e.g. film, television, videogames, music, theatre, literature, art, etc.) - Impact of cultural, national, regional identity on perceptions of the supernatural - Ideological implications of the supernatural: how the supernatural reflects and informs political anxieties and general attitudes about the human body, race, gender, sexuality, class and nationality - Interface between science, technology and the supernatural - Commodifying the supernatural (dark tourism, spiritualists/fortune-tellers, etc.) - Supernaturalism and Indigenous cultures - Physiological/neurological perspectives on the supernatural - Impact of beliefs in the supernatural on everyday practices, and the implications of these practices - Interface between education and belief in the supernatural - Health, wellness and supernatural beliefs - Analyses of case studies of supernatural occurrences What To Send The aim of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q and a's, round-tables etc. Creative responses to the subject, such as poetry/prose, short film screenings/original drama, installations and alternative presentation styles that engage the audience and foster debate are particularly encouraged. Global Horror: Local Perspectives. An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference
Global Horror: Local Perspectives An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference Saturday 4th April 2020 - Sunday 5th April 2020 Lisbon, Portugal Horror pervades human experience. It affects us both as individuals and as members of social communities, it is recurrent in pop culture and arguably present in all fields of human knowledge and realms of storytelling, from Cronus eating his own children, to Freddy Krueger's sadistic murders in A Nightmare on Elm Street to media coverage of war. As a fundamentally paradoxical concept, horror simultaneously repels and fascinates us: we naturally dread it, yet we are drawn to it. We are taught to avoid that which is horrifying, but the appeal of horror, whether in the form of fiction or sensational news, is irresistible. Indeed, we simultaneously narrate, describe, imagine, consume, dread and crave horror in all of its dimensions, and with the most varied goals. Horror taps into primal emotions of fear and disgust that are universal to the human condition, and finds expression across cultures and historical periods. Yet the texts that shape the ways in which horror is broadly understood historically reflect predominantly Anglo-European and American cultural, social, historical and geographical contexts. Growing awareness and appreciation of the rich horror traditions of other countries around the world, including Japan, Korean, India, Brazil and Ecuador, has highlighted the importance of considering horror in a global context. Accordingly, the Global Horror: Local Perspectives Project provides a platform for exploring the ways in which horror motifs and themes are expressed through the 'local perspectives' that inform the creative practices and daily life of particular nations and cultures. It is not the intent of the Project to exclude Anglo-European and American perspectives from the conversation of global horror but rather to centre other horror traditions which have frequently been de-centred or completely overlooked in the past. The scope of the Project therefore includes work that explores marginalised local perspectives within Anglo-European and American horror, and work that examines Anglo-European and American horror from a global perspective with a view to forming an innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further research and collaboration. Key Topics Horror manifests itself in myriad ways, with ramifications that transcend the lines that demarcate disciplines, subjects and professions. It is only through interdisciplinary engagement that we can develop a more complete understanding of the mechanisms that nations and cultures around the world use to express, process, and cope with horror. The conference therefore offers a springboard for participants from diverse professions, practices and walks of life to engage in interdisciplinary dialogues on topics that include: - Case studies of un(der)-represented horror traditions in nations and cultures - How the history, religion, cultural norms of a nation/culture influence local perceptions and representations of horror in literature, film, television, music, art and videogames - Impact of digital technology on creating and disseminating local perspectives on horror - How globalisation as a cultural and economic force influences 'local perspectives' on horror - Creative practitioners whose work shapes local perspectives on horror - Dark humour and making fun of global horror - Connections between horror in everyday life and fictional horror - Impact of real or fictional global horrors on individuals (mental illness, trauma, nightmares, other physiological symptoms) - Horror in religious/spiritual systems (martyrdom, grotesque/monstrous deities, rituals, etc.) - Social practices associated with horror: cannibalism, (self-)mutilation, abusive rites of passage, suicide, heresies - Horror in nation-building (slavery, war, genocide, etc.) - Medical/clinical perspectives: interfaces of horror and medicine; dealing with patients struggling to cope with horrifying experiences - Educational perspectives: how the curriculum shapes perceptions of horror, its uses and its impacts; horror in children's stories/horror as pedagogical tool, etc. - Commodifying horror: dark tourism, etc. - Technology as agent of horror (weapons, dissemination of fear, etc.) - How national and international law facilitate and mitigate horror - Activism as response to horror - Horror and the media: news coverage, sensationalism - Horror and space: streets, cities, towns, buildings, deserted areas - The design of horror: images, branding, advertisement, commercial campaigns involving horror - Urban legends and local horrors - Best practice for researching and studying global horror - Interdisciplinarity as a tool to overcome the indescribability of horror What To Send The aim of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q and a's, round-tables etc. Creative responses to the subject, such as poetry/prose, short film screenings/original drama, installations and alternative presentation styles that engage the audience and foster debate are particularly encouraged. Please feel free to put forward proposals that you think will get the message across, in whatever form. At the end of the conference we will be exploring ways in which we can develop the discussions and dialogues in new and sustainable inclusive interdisciplinary directions, including research, workshops and publications which will help us make sense of the topics discussed during the meeting. E-mails should be entitled: Global Horror Submission Where To Send Abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to the Organising Chair and the Project Administrator: Claudio Zanini: haunted32@yahoo.com.br Len Capuli (Project Administrator): lisbonhorror@progressiveconnexions.net What's so Special About a Progressive Connexions Event? Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are suited to the history and culture of the event. Ethos Progressive Connexions believes it is a mark of personal courtesy and professional respect to your colleagues that all delegates should attend for the full duration of the meeting. Bad Mothers A Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference
Bad Mothers
A Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference
Saturday 4th April 2020 - Sunday 5th April 2020
Lisbon, Portugal
As givers of life, mothers occupy an essential role in ensuring the ongoing survival of the human race. The bond between mother and child is commonly revered in societies as primal and sacred. Perhaps it is because of the importance of child-bearing and child-rearing that so much critical attention has been given to how mothers should and should not behave. Entertainment and news media outlets, parenting manuals and social media are among the main sources of role models to which mothers might aspire as well as cautionary tales of women whose conduct has earned them the label of bad mothers. But just what does it mean to be a bad mother? While mothers who kill or cause harm to their children are obvious examples, how should we regard a mother whose neglect for her child is due to having to work multiple jobs to support her family? What about the mother whose loving indulgence of her child's every wish causes the child to develop a detrimental sense of entitlement? These grey areas signify the complexities of motherhood itself, as well as the challenges associated with evaluating a mother's goodness or badness.
In recognition of the fundamentally interdisciplinary nature of motherhood, the Bad Mothers event seeks to provide a platform for participants to explore this multi-faceted topic with a view to forming an innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further research and collaboration. Key questions for discussion include: What are the purposes and consequences of declaring someone a bad mother? How have the standards for being a bad mother changed over time? To what extent is the bad mother label a product of economic and racial privilege? What do stories of real and fictional bad mothers reveal about broader socio-cultural preoccupations? Are bad mothers ever justified in their behaviour, and can they be redeemed? Is there an obligation to act in relation to bad mothers?
Bad Mothers is a project within a newly forming Evil Families thread which will also consider Bad Fathers and already has an event dealing with Evil Children: Children and Evil.

What To Send
The aim of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, problem-solving sessions, case studies, panels, q&a's, round-tables etc.

What's so Special About A Progressive Connexions Event?
Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are suited to the history and culture of the event.
