––– The Southeast Asian Conference on Education –––

The inaugural Southeast Asian Conference on Education (SEACE2020) will be The International Academic Forum's (IAFOR) first event in Southeast Asia. SEACE2020 will be held in Singapore, a great crossroads of peoples, cultures and ideas, and home to some of the world's finest universities, and will provide an exciting opportunity for international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary discussions on education practices, policies, theories, and innovations.

Instead of offering a strict conference theme at SEACE2020, IAFOR has decided to invite submissions on any topic related to the field of education. By opening the conference theme to the broad field of education, it is expected that we can come together as educators and policymakers without any limitations. There will be a number of special streams and topics, which may include Teaching and Learning, Educational Structures, Community and Society, Language and Culture, Psychology, Technology, and others. However, there will not be an overall theme that might restrict what aspects of education people want to explore and discuss.

SEACE2020 is held in partnership with the IAFOR Research Centre at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) at Osaka University, and the ASEAN Career Fair. SEACE2020 encourages academics and scholars to meet and exchange ideas and views in a forum stimulating respectful dialogue. Like our long-running events elsewhere in the world, this event will afford an exceptional opportunity for renewing old acquaintances, making new contacts, networking, and facilitating partnerships across national and disciplinary borders.

We look forward to welcoming to Singapore scholars from across Southeast Asia and around the world for what is sure to be an exciting conference.

The Art of Being Human: Forgiveness, Decency, Trust and Gratitude

The Art of Being Human: Forgiveness, Decency, Trust and Gratitude
An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Saturday 7th March 2020 - -Sunday 8th March 2020
Prague, Czech Republic

What is it to be human? How can we best live our lives in today's complex world? What values show humanity at its finest, and how can these be cultivated?

As part of our series of events 'Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Social Values', we will explore these questions under the conference theme 'The Art of Being Human'. We begin this series by considering four positive aspects of the human condition: forgiveness, decency, trust, and gratitude. While this is an arbitrary list, chosen from a much longer inventory of humanity's better attributes, it is a useful starting point for discussion. All four features are beneficial to the people with whom we interact, and they are good for us also. When we forgive someone, it is not only the transgressor who gains: a burden is removed from our own shoulders too. Similarly, acting decently, trusting others, and showing gratitude all have deeply personal benefits as well as improving the lives of those around us. At the same time, these actions are fraught with challenges and limitations that warrant closer consideration and analysis.

Forgiveness
'To err is human, to forgive divine', according to Alexander Pope. Everyone makes mistakes, but to show forgiveness for these is a finer action. Many religions warn against bearing grudges and feuding, advising us to forgive each other instead – as God forgives us for our transgressions. The alternative is to ruminate about what has offended us – or even to plot revenge. On a personal level, this is bad for our wellbeing, and on the international political stage it can escalate into war. An apology could be enough to encourage personal forgiveness, while political forgiveness might need a 'Truth and Reconciliation Commission'. But what are the limits of forgiveness? Who is entitled to forgive? What reparations are needed? And how essential is it to forgive ourselves?

Decency
Decency is still important in our times, both in public life and in the private sphere. Yet as we push into the 21st Century, 'decency' is coming under increasing pressure across numerous fronts and on many diverse levels. There is a coarsening of both personal and political discourse in certain places. In one sense, decent housing, decent food, decent healthcare, decent education and a decent job are all necessary for people to flourish. Yet the concept is sometimes abused when deployed by powerful groups – political, social or religious – to denounce others for indecency. Is decency a universal aspiration or is it determined locally, culturally, socially? And how does decency relate to power and the powerful, to gender, to the homeless, to the weak and to the strangers in our midst? Ought decency to be encouraged, or is it an outdated concept? If it is to be encouraged, what role do education, popular culture, laws, and professional codes have in promoting decency?

Trust
We live in a time when manipulated images, partisan reporting, and allegations of 'fake news' make it increasingly difficult to know who is worthy of our trust. Trust is a leap of faith that depends on a combination of experience, intuition, bravery and sheer hope. Interpersonal trust circumvents the uncertainties that put relationships at risk and transforms these into the most wondrous of alliances, as doubt turns to rapture. Less romantically, we trust professionals to conduct themselves in accordance with the rules and standards of their fields. We trust experts to tell us about events in the world and what we should or should not do. However, people and institutions we trusted have sometimes let us down. It has never been more important to evaluate how trust informs our personal and professional lives, as well as the way we operate in our communities. This raises a number of questions, including: Is there inherent value in trusting and being trusted? Is trust necessary for survival in a society? What are the foundations of trust? What makes a person or institution (un)worthy of trust? How do factors such as culture, historical context and identity shape the way we understand the concept of trust? What are the limits of trust? What are effective strategies for coping with lost trust and rebuilding a trusting relationship?

Gratitude
Saying "Thank you" is an everyday human action. But its mundane nature disguises an important phenomenon. Gratitude, it seems, is a key to feeling more satisfied with life. Studies have shown how gratitude can improve relationships, help in coping with adversity, and even fortify the immune system. Appreciating what we have is also an antidote to envy and competitiveness. But there are those whose sense of entitlement to social status and material wealth – denied to others less fortunate – leads to ingratitude and arrogance. This raises questions, including: To whom do we owe gratitude? And how might this be expressed? How should we receive gratitude? To what extent are social networks of obligation founded on gratitude?

We are thrilled to open up The Art of Being Human to exploration, assessment and examination, with a view to establishing real world impact in the conclusions reached. We welcome presentations and participation from artists, ngo workers, performers, scholars, thinkers, researchers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and areas of study, who have a contribution to make in understanding the art of being human. Subject to the discussions taking place at the conference, there is an intention to form an innovative interdisciplinary publication with the purpose of engendering further interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion.

The sister project The Art Of Being Inhuman will meet later in 2020.

Key Topics
Some of the themes that we would like to see connected with forgiveness, decency, trust, and gratitude include (but are not limited to):

~ personal relationships (including online interactions)

What's so Special About A Progressive Connexions Conference?
A fresh, friendly, dynamic format – at Progressive Connexions we are dedicated to breaking away from the stuffy, old-fashion conference formats, where endless presentations are read aloud off PowerPoints. We work to bring you an interactive format, where exchange of experience and information is alternated with captivating workshops, engaging debates and round tables, time set aside for getting to know each other and for discussing common future projects and initiatives, all in a warm, relaxed, egalitarian atmosphere.

A chance to network with international professionals – the beauty of our interdisciplinary events is that they bring together professionals from all over the world and from various fields of activity, all joined together by a shared passion. Not only will the exchange of experience, knowledge and stories be extremely valuable in itself, but we seek to create lasting, ever-growing communities around our projects, which will become a valuable resource for those belonging to them.

A chance to be part of constructing change – There is only one thing we love as much as promoting knowledge: promoting real, lasting social change by encouraging our participants to take collective action, under whichever form is most suited to their needs and expertise (policy proposals, measuring instruments, research projects, educational materials, etc.) We will support all such actions in the aftermath of the event as well, providing a platform for further discussions, advice from the experts on our Project Advisory Team and various other tools and intellectual resources, as needed.

An opportunity to discuss things that matter to you – Our events are not only about discussing how things work in the respective field, but also about how people work in that field – what are the struggles, problems and solutions professionals have found in their line of work, what are the areas where better communication among specialists is needed and how the interdisciplinary approach can help bridge those gaps and help provide answers to questions from specific areas of activity.

An unforgettable experience – When participating in a Progressive Connexions event, there is a good chance you will make some long-time friends. Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are suited to the history and culture of the event.

Ethos
Progressive Connexions believes it is a mark of personal courtesy and professional respect to your colleagues that all delegates should attend for the full duration of the meeting. If you are unable to make this commitment, please do not submit an abstract or proposal for presentation.

Please note: Progressive Connexions is a not-for-profit network and we are not in a position to be able to assist with conference travel or subsistence, nor can we offer discounts off published rates and fees.

Friendship: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Friendship
An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Saturday 7th March 2020 - Sunday 8th March 2020
Prague, Czech Republic

Few relationships are as significant as our friendships. The Buddha was once asked by his cousin, Ananda, "Is friendship part of the path?" The Buddha's response, "No Ananda, friendship is the whole path," suggesting the momentous power and meaning attributed to friendships. Certainly, close friendships can be as just as important to us as familial bonds. Conversely, the absence of friends can cause feelings of loneliness and isolation. Although the general psychological and biological benefits of friendship have been well documented, the actual experience of friendship is a deeply personal one. Not only do we each have our own views on what friendship means, we each have our own approach to choosing our friends.

Because of this element of subjectivity, friendship is a complex concept that deserves more extensive exploration of personal experiences and the ways in which it shapes, and is shaped by, social norms. The interplay between the way friendship is understood in a particular society and the way it is experienced by individuals raises a variety of questions: how do friendships form; what is the basis for the 'attraction' that underpins them; what purposes do they serve; why has friendship come to be regarded as a universal 'good'; how do meanings of friendship change over time; what does it mean to be a "good friend"; what tangible things can be done to promote friendship as a social value; how might the conduct among friends be harnessed for the communal good more broadly; and more.

This inaugural inclusive conference aims to explore these and other facets of friendship through an inter-disciplinary dialogue that transcends the boundaries of the intellectual, the emotional and the personal with a view to forming a selective and innovative publication to engender further research and collaboration.

Proposals are invited for: presentations, papers, panels, workshops, readings, performances, screenings and installations on any aspect of friendship, including the following themes:

~ Philosophical justifications and critiques of friendship
~ Friendship in sacred texts and spiritual traditions
~ Historical perspectives on friendship
~ Physiological and neurological perspectives on friendship
~ Impact of poor mental or physical health on friendship, and relevant coping strategies
~ Counselling and self-help approaches to friendship issues
~ Intimacy and friendship
~ Dynamics of specific types of friendships: humans and animals, "bromance", "best friends", fraternal bonds, etc.
~ Factors that cause friendships to form, breakdown, change, rekindle
~ Impact of gender, sexuality, sex, class, religion, nationality, culture, and race on friendship
~ Friendship and the process of growing up, maturing and ageing
~ Non-human friendships: Friendships between animals, institutions, nations, etc.
~ Rivalries between friends; 'frenemies'; friendship and ideological differences
~ Teaching friendship in the school curriculum
~ Technology and Friendship: impact of inventions and technology on how friendships form and develop, friendship and artificial intelligence/robots, social media
~ Famous friendships and how they inform understandings of friendship
~ Dark sides of friendship: cliques, nepotism, exploitation, conspiracies, etc.
~ Legal recognition of friendship
~ Models of friendship in film, television, songs, theatre, video-games, literature, etc.
~ The role of churches, NGOs, social policy and charities in promoting the values of friendship in the public sphere

What to Send
The aim of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q and a's, round-tables etc. Please feel free to put forward proposals that you think will get the message across, in whatever form.

You will be notified of the panel's decision by Friday 18th October 2019.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 17th January 2020.

What's so Special About A Progressive Connexions Event?

Anthropological Excursion (on final day)
Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia

Theme
Asian Text, Global Context

The CALA 2020 theme, "Asian Text, Global Context", describes a culmination of 300 years of East-West global communication. Throughouty, the symbolisms of Asian 'text' have been significantly emphasized, contested, (re)interpreted, and distorted, while employed for both political and Anthropological purpose. Asian text has become a highly representational, and legitimizing device, and its potency cannot be underestimated. Never has it shown more significance than in the current era, where its intensified usage, and its qualities in Asian identities, seek description. The Asian text pervades the whole semiotic spectrum of that which is performatively Asian, and distinct from the Non-Asian, yet a text which can interlink the East and the West, through a multitude of textual modes. The continuous recentralization and recontextualization of Asian texts, both locally and globally, are hence vital to representations of Asia, Linguistically, Anthropologically, Socioculturally, Politically, and beyond. The CALA 2020 thus calls for renewed interpretations of Asian texts, in their global contexts. These interpretations increase in significance as; return migration to Asia is now a salient factor in transnational flows; online texts and their textual modes now compete ever more enthusiastically to effect disjunctures in previously Western dominated technologies; perspectives of life and social interaction now increasingly draw from Asia, producing spaces for revised semiotics; the intersubjectivities of political, sociocultural, and religious practices motivate dialogue, thus shifting ethnic demarcations, and sociopolitical interventions. Ultimately, Eastern demographics, and their social dynamics, continue to uniquely inform and complexify Asian texts, in both local and in global contexts.

61st Annual Conference @ Indian Society of Labour Economics

Call for Papers: First Annual Economics Conference @ Ahmedabad UNiversity

Call for Papers: First Annual Economics Conference

50 years of Bank Nationalisation: Indian Banking at Cross Roads

Amrut Mody School of Management, Ahmedabad University is pleased to announce its First Annual Economics Conference on the theme 50 years of Bank Nationalisation: Indian Banking at Cross Roads.

On July 19, 1969, the Indian Government nationalised 14 largest private sector banks in India to push city-based banks to provide banking in rural areas. However, the record has been at best mixed. The banks did open branches and provided banking services in rural and neglected areas but this rural push was at the cost of profitability and efficiency of banks. The Finance Minister in the interim budget speech of 2019-20 made the following observation: "Bank nationalisation was first done 50 years ago, but a large part of the country was still left out of the economic mainstream with no access to formal banking."

The year 2019 also places Indian banking at crossroads.  The recent NPA crisis and spate of fraud cases has put spotlight on India's banks. The big question is how despite many years of reforms and adopting prudential norms, there is an NPA crisis of this scale? The crisis has also opened up the old issue of whether RBI has enough powers to regulate public sector banks.

Interestingly, India is not the only country facing a banking crisis. Most economies are undergoing their own crises in banking which include not just rising NPAs but also questions over lack of appropriate culture in the industry. Apart from these structural issues, the rise of digital banking is also challenging the older models of banking.

The 50th anniversary is a good time to review these ongoing developments in banking.

We are pleased to inform you that RBI Governor Mr Shaktikanta Das has agreed to inaugurate and deliver the inaugural lecture. This will be followed by a keynote lecture from Dr C Rangarajan, former Governor of RBI. Ms Usha Thorat, former Deputy Governor of RBI will join us in a panel discussion. We will also have other eminent academics, bankers and subject experts joining us at the conference. The schedule will be uploaded soon on this webpage.

We invite papers to the Conference on the following themes:

Regulation and Supervision of Banks.
Financial Inclusion.
Technology in Banking and Payment Systems.
History of Bank Nationalisation in India (and other countries).
Send us an abstract of your research paper (max. 500 words).

On acceptance, you will be ideally required to submit the full paper.

If one is unable to write the full paper, we shall also accept a presentation hoping for later submission of the paper.

Music and Death: 2nd Global Interdisciplinary Conference

Music and Death
2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Saturday 7th March 2020 - Sunday 8th March 2020
Prague, Czech Republic

The death of a lover, child, spouse, partner, parent, friend is the loss of someone unique and irreplaceable – a presence in our lives never to be seen, held, heard or felt again. The tragic loss of familiar, iconic, well loved public figures and celebrities, the unexpected deaths of people through murder, violence or terrorism, heart rending loss through illness, disease or natural disasters all remind us of the fragility and vulnerability of our lives. In times like these music is often our companion providing comfort in the incomprehensibility of loss.

"Music and... Death" is a continuing series of inclusive interdisciplinary and international projects focusing on the many roles of music within human living, thinking and feeling. This event is open to the exploration of all historical and contemporary genres of music to map the ways in which music imagines, expresses, confronts, wrestles and gives us ways of responding to and coping with dying, death, grief and remembrance. Subject to the presentations and discussions which take place at the meeting, there is a possibility for a publication to emerge with the aim of engendering further interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion.

This conference is open to all academic fields of inquiry from ethnomusicology, music, folklore, cultural studies, media studies, communication studies, sociology, anthropology, religious studies and so on. It is welcoming of graduate students and professors of all rank, as well as non-academic and independent researchers, writers, performers and media artists. It is anticipated that a broad number of participants will represent a variety of different nationalities, thus adding to the cross disciplinary nature of the discussions, presentations and conference as a whole.

Key topics, themes and issues for discussion may include, but are not limited to:

- Music, mortality and the awareness of death
- Music imagining death
- Expressing dying and death
- Confronting death
- The sounds of dying and death
- Instruments, methods, techniques and tools used in grappling with dying and death
- Recording and producing death

What to Send
The aim of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring together academics, professionals, practitioners, media artists, performers, NGO's, voluntary sector workers, in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, panels, q and a's, performances, media screenings etc. Please feel free to put forward proposals that you think will get the message across, in whatever form.

Whilst we welcome proposals for live performances, our options are unfortunately limited by the facilities available at the venue as well as any cost considerations relating to staging the performance. If you are interested in staging a live performance, please contact us and let us know what you have in mind and we will try out best to accommodate it.

300 word proposals, presentations, scores, compositions, mp3's/flacs and other forms of contribution and participation should be submitted by Friday 4th October 2019. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chairs.

All submissions will be minimally double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been minimally triple and quadruple reviewed.

You will be notified of the panel's decision by Friday 18th October 2019.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 17th January 2020.

Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, PDF, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in the programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.

E-mails should be entitled: Music and Death Submission.

What's so Special About a Progressive Connexions Event?
