***ECAH2017 Conference Theme: "History, Story, Narrative"

Historians are far from the only interested party in writing history. In a sense it is an interest we all share – whether we are talking politics, region, family birthright, or even personal experience. We are both spectators to the process of history while being intimately situated within its impact and formations.

How, then, best to write it? Is it always the victor's version? Have we not begun increasingly to write "history from below," that lived by those who are not at the top of the power hierarchy? Are accounts of history always gender-inflected, hitherto at least men rather than women? Who gets to tell history if the issue is colonialism or class? How does geography, the power of place, intersect with history? What is the status of the personal story or narrative within the larger frame of events?

This conference addresses issues of writing history from literary and other discursive perspectives. That is to say: novels, plays, poems, autobiography, memoir, diary, travel log, and a variety of styles of essay. One thinks of Shakespeare's history plays, Tolstoy's War and Peace, Shi Nai'an's The Water Margin, Balzac's La Comédie Humaine. It also addresses oral history, the spoken account or witness, Hiroshima survivor to modern Syrian migrant

Which also connects to the nexus of media and history. The great "historical" films continue to hold us, be it Eisenstein's October: Ten Days That Shook the World (1925) or Gone with the Wind (1940). We live in an age of documentaries, whether film or TV. There is a view that we also inhabit "instant" history, the download to laptop, the app, the all-purpose mobile. How has this technology changed our perception, our lived experience, of history? What is the role of commemoration, parade, holiday, festival, or statuary, in the writing of history?

The different modes by which we see and understand history, flow and counter-flow, nevertheless come back to certain basics.

One asks whether we deceive ourselves in always asking for some grand narrative. Can there only be one narrator or is history of necessity a colloquium, contested ground? Is national history a myth? And history-writing itself: is it actually a form of fiction, an artifice which flatters to deceive? What, exactly, is a historical fact?

This conference, we hope, will address these perspectives and others which connect and arise.

For the fourth consecutive year, The European Conference on Arts and Humanities will be held alongside The European Conference on Media, Communication and Film. Registration for either of these conferences will allow participants to attend sessions in the other.

In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending a warm welcome to you in Brighton.

**Featured Panel Presentation: The Challenges of Doing Research and Creative Activity in the Arts and Humanities Today
Professor Donald E. Hall and Professor Anne Boddington

Given the rise of anti-intellectualism and increasing emphasis on technical and skills-based education, 2017 and beyond will prove particularly challenging times for those of us working in the arts and humanities. Our panellists will each speak for five to ten minutes about the broad political constraints on their work, as well as their respective national and institutional contexts of funding and prioritisation. This will be followed by a general discussion with the audience about collective experiences and strategies for individual and collective response to the challenges that we face.

Further programming will be announced in the coming weeks and months.

***Global2017 Conference Theme: "Global Realities: Precarious Survival and Belonging"

The theme for the Asian Conference on Cultural Studies 2014 in Osaka was "Borderlands of becoming, belonging and sharing". In his presentation, Conference Co-Chair Professor Baden Offord wrote "Gloria Anzaldua's idea of the borderland has become a critical conceptual rubric used by cultural researchers as a way of understanding, explaining and articulating the in-determined, vague, ambiguous nature of everyday life and the cultural politics of border-knowledge, border crossings, transgression, living in-between and multiple belongings. Borderlands is also about a social space where people of diverse backgrounds and identities meet and share a space in which the politics of co-presence and co-existence are experienced and enacted in mundane ways."

Now, at this second IAFOR Global Studies conference, we revisit that territory under the title "Global Realities: Precarious Survival and Belonging". While retaining the ideas expressed by Prof. Offord in 2014, this conference will turn its focus on to the precariousness of life across the world, life being understood in all its amplitude. Since 2014 we have witnessed the horror of the refugee crisis in Europe and how borders which should have been crossed have been blocked off by barbed wire fences. The whole context of borders, belonging and survival has shifted resulting in an increase in racism, radical nationalisms, terrorism, infringements of human rights, and rising poverty levels, to mention only a few of the globalised problems confronting our world. The result of such precarity, even of the planet itself, has led to a generalised sense of communal and individual vulnerability.

Raimond Gaita recently noted, "It is striking how often people now speak of 'a common humanity' in ethically inflected registers, or ethically resonant tones that express a fellowship of all the peoples of the earth, or sometimes the hope for such a fellowship." Hopefully, this conference will discuss the ways and means by which a "common humanity" may be aspired to by future generations.

We look forward to extending a warm welcome to you in 2017.

***ACCS2017 Conference Theme: "Global Realities: Precarious Survival and Belonging"

Now we revisit that territory under the title "Global Realities: Precarious Survival and Belonging".

We look forward to welcoming you to Kobe, Japan.

**Keynote Presentation: Precarious Futures, Precarious Pasts: Migritude and Planetarity

Professor Gaurav Desai, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA

In this talk I will focus on the figure of the migrant in recent Anglophone fiction from Africa and South Asia. I am interested in the continuities and discontinuities in the experience of migration from the nineteenth century to the present, particularly, though not exclusively, for vulnerable populations. I then attempt to connect that experience to challenges posed to us by environmental changes and vulnerabilities in the same time frame. The aim is to think through the figure of the migrant not just as someone who moves from one sociopolitical context – village, town, city, nation – to another, but to think through migrant experiences as they relate to larger planetary concerns.

**Featured Presentation: Buddhist Terrorism?
Dr Brian Victoria, Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies, UK

Buddhism has long enjoyed a reputation in the West as a religion of peace. It is only in recent years that the long history of those calling themselves Buddhists who engaged in warfare has been introduced to Western readers (see, for example, Buddhist Warfare). In an era in which terrorist acts carried out by those who identify themselves as Muslims attract our attention, it is noteworthy that Buddhists, too, are not immune to this form of religious fanaticism. The historical truth is that in 1930s Japan at least three Buddhist-related acts of terrorism took place. While introducing these terrorist acts, this presentation focuses on the Buddhist doctrine and practice undergirding the so-called "Blood Oath Corps Incident" (J. Ketsumeidan Jiken) of early 1932.

***AGen2017 Conference Theme: "East Meets West: Innovation and Discovery"

The Asian Conference on Aging and Gerontology 2017 (AGen2017) invites papers on all aspects of aging. Our theme explores the tensions that have emerged due to globalisation and the growing influence of Western cultural values on Eastern traditions such as intergeneration coresidence, filial piety and the family-based support networks that provide for the care of the elderly in later life. Jolly and Macintyre's depiction of the persistent belief in an "unchanging cultural core" of bedrock values such as family support for the elderly has resulted in the resistance of many governments in Asia and the Pacific Rim to plan effectively for the care and needs of a growing aging population. By treating culture as a dynamic process that adapts to new ideas, opportunities and economic realities we can anticipate change and implement proactive policies that support the elderly, their families and the societies that are ultimately responsible for the quality of life among their populations. This conference serves as an opportunity to present new research on the changing face of aging in the Asia-Pacific Region, to network with fellow professionals and to develop policy interventions that improve the lives of our elders.

The growing disconnect in Asia from traditional forms of family support is seen in the increased shift towards more Western models of independence for elders, decreased levels of coresidence and extended family living, and the weakening of family support networks. In particular, AGen2017 seeks presentations on intergeneration support, the economics of retirement, the changing health patterns of the elderly, independent living, the residential patterns of the elderly, or assistive technologies. The Asian Conference on Aging and Gerontology is the only international conference on aging held annually in Japan and we welcome your participation and research.

In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017.

– The AGen2017 Organising Committee (iafor.org/agen2017-committee)

**Plenary Panel: Easts Meets West – Healthy, Active and Beautiful Aging in Asia
Featured Panel Chairs: Professor James McNally and Professor Hiroshi Ishida

How any society deals with aging can be a contentious issue, one on which questions of culture, convenience and even expedience are brought to bear. Economic prosperity and peace in developed countries has lead to unprecedented levels of healthcare provision for a population that, as a result, is living far longer. Coupled with falling birthrates, Western Europe and Japan are witnessing demographic changes that bring unparalleled challenges but also unexpected opportunities for aging populations, as innovations and discoveries help people lead active and healthy lives.

This panel will provide an overview of the demographic situation in different countries and cultures in Asia and beyond to compare and contrast outlooks for the aged. It will also examine the concepts of healthy, active and beautiful aging.

*A complementary panel will be held on the same theme at the European Conference Series 2017 in Brighton, UK.

**Featured Presentation: Methodologies for the Collection of Comparative Community Level Public Health Data: Obtaining Powerful and Statistically Meaningful Findings for Small Populations
Professor James W. McNally, University of Michigan, USA

Recent health emergencies such as the ebola outbreak in 2015 and the current zika virus reflects the pressing need for the rapid and statistically meaningful collection of data, often within small geographic areas. The collection of public health data at the community level is challenging for a number of reasons. Building respondent trust and gaining local support are key, but even when these barriers are overcome the choice of questions and how they are asked is central to the success of a study and to its impact on health improvements and policy change. One of the common problems found in many community level studies is the lack of comparability and the inability to generalize findings beyond the study area. While interesting and useful information is often obtained, translating this information into a framework that facilitates policy impact often proves difficult due to a lack of comparability. The NACDA Program on Aging has been promoting a methodology for overcoming the challenges of generalizability and comparability that has been successfully employed in several small area studies of public health and healthcare unitization. The presentation will describe this methodology and provide examples of its efficacy in real-world research situations. The presentation will provide supporting materials to guide interested users in applying this approach for their own research specializations. This approach is flexible and works across languages and research disciplines so it can be applied in a variety of public health studies, including RAPID AREA ANALYSIS (RAP) situations.
