CALL SUMMARY:

As an inherently interdisciplinary conference, 'Livable Cities – London' explores cities as a material and immaterial question – as an interplay of forces including, but not limited to: politics, sociological trends, cultural tendencies, media representations, economic policy, design and planning methods, the provision of public services, and more.

By juxtaposing, comparing and sharing work in various fields, it is expected that a broader and richer picture will emerge regarding what makes the places we inhabit more, or less, livable.

CALL:

Today, education is often defined as hybrid. Hybrid delivery in-class and online. Mixed theories of teaching and practice. Cross-disciplinary courses and programs. Alternative modes of enquiry. Community and student engagement. Concepts of explorative learning. Multicultural perspectives on subjects. The combined arts and sciences of STEAM - to name but a few. The same hybridity is true of life and work. We value a work-life balance. We seek self fulfilment in professional contexts. We see education as continual through professional development and life-long learning.

In this context, education plays many roles, and serves many people and purposes. It takes on many forms. In embracing this hybridity, the Learning. Life. Work. conference seeks to explore the numerous ways education morphs and blurs – through varied methodologies across a multitude of disciplines, geographies, and mind sets.

Welcoming delegates from locations across the world to consider the future hybridities of teaching and learning, we aim to share perspectives and disseminate best practices. We look to educators, students, artists, theorists, and industry professionals. We will share initiatives, programs, and projects.

Sacred Arts: Exploring the Spiritual Dimensions of Artistic Expression and Ritual

Sacred Arts: Exploring the Spiritual Dimensions of Artistic Expression and Ritual
11th to 12th May 2024
Online and Birkbeck, University of London

This transdisciplinary conference aims to bring together researchers, creatives, experts, and students interested in the role that religious artefacts and rituals can play in our perception of the sacred.

Enquiries: conferences@labrc.co.uk
Web address: https://labrc.co.uk/2024/02/09/sacred-arts/
Sponsored by: London Arts-Based Research Centre

Call for Papers

Ever since the dawn of time, there has been an art-based approach to spirituality. People have created and developed ritualistic relationships with artefacts in order to help them understand, express, and communicate with the divine. From jewellery to iconography, music, garments, sculptures, architecture, incense, and more, these objects of art have encapsulated and preserved religious symbols and traditions over many generations.

This conference aims to bring together researchers, postgraduate students, and creatives interested in the role that religious artefacts and rituals can play in our perception of the sacred. In this transdisciplinary forum, we will be sharing ideas relating to all aspects of art and the divine, especially regarding matter, materials, and materiality in religious cultures throughout the ages. Art is associated with religious traditions around the world, and sacred objects/artefacts (such as icons, sculptures, jewellery, garments, architecture, etc.) have the capacity to depict and describe archetypal, spiritual concepts and religious content through matter. We would like to explore topics revolving around the connection between religions and material culture, especially in observing the relationships between people and sacred artefacts, whether these relationships are of spiritual, informative, creative, scientific or ekphrastic nature.

We would like to explore the following questions: How can religious artefacts shape our understanding of the divine? What type of ekphrastic responses may be generated between different mediums of religious art? What factors come into play in the making and development of iconography and other art of religious significance? How can archaeological findings tell us more about the history of the sacred in our psyche?

**We welcome 15-minute presentations of either academic or creative form.

Central topics include, but are not limited to:

- Iconography: process, meaning, making, and using
- Calligraphy
- Ekphrastic responses to sacred art (such as icons)
- Art-based rituals in spiritual practice
- Cross-cultural interactions and influences
- Archaeological discoveries through these artefacts
- Modes of interaction between different cultures/faiths in the creation and use of artefacts with religious significance
- Spiritual architecture
- Special processes and techniques in iconography
- Renovation of artefacts
- Sacred music
- Food in religious practice
- Religious sculpture
- Classicism and neo-classicist approaches to religion through art
- The Renaissance
- Religious symbols in art of ancient civilizations
- The contemporary use of ancient religious symbols in art, fashion, and rituals
- Comparative religion
- Religious manuscripts
- Interdisciplinary conversations
- Consciousness and the imaginal realm
- Archetypal expressions
- Spiritual symbolism
- Mythology as methodology
- Alchemical symbolism

Held at the University of London, Birkbeck (as well as online), this two-day hybrid conference will take place on 11-12 May, 2024. The first day, May 11 will be at Birkbeck (for both in-person and online presentations), and the second day, May 12 will be held fully online.

Presenters may either share academic papers and/or creative work (poetry, prose, photography, music, painting, etc.), as we highly encourage arts-based research, as well as research which stimulates reflection on creativity, image, symbol and archetype. Please fill out our proposal form on https://forms.gle/4sEr597f8ZPB6AJZ6 by April 1, 2024. We will be announcing our plenary speakers and the full programme of the conference will be ready after the presenters are selected.

Renaissance Resonances: Across Time, Across Disciplines (A Transdisciplinary Conference)

Renaissance Resonances: Across Time, Across Disciplines (A Transdisciplinary Conference)
20th to 21st April 2024
London, United Kingdom

Enquiries: info@labrc.co.uk
Web address: https://labrc.co.uk/2024/02/04/renaissance/
Sponsored by: London Arts-Based Research Centre

Call for Papers:

This transdisciplinary conference invites academics, creatives, practitioners, and students to look at how the Renaissance influences culture today, from the sciences to the arts, and anything in between. In exploring the different transdisciplinary approaches to the Renaissance and its relevance today, this event aims to look at the interstices between the Renaissance and contemporary artwork, literary pieces, performances, music, film, science, and the ways in which these interact with history, politics and culture.

"Renaissance", meaning "re-birth", refers to the breaking free from the Middle Ages and founding the modern world as we know it today, mainly through the transdisciplinarity of its artists and scientists. The world owes many of its inventions to the Renaissance (like the pencil by the Bernacottis, the printing press by Gutenberg, the airplane by Leonardo da Vinci, and the microscope by Galileo), which also influenced art, literature, and drama (as we see in the case of Shakespeare and the Renaissance masters like Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, and Donatello). So perhaps, the influence of the Renaissance goes beyond the names of the Ninja Turtles!

Presenters may either share academic papers and/or creative work (poetry, prose, photography, music, painting, performance, etc.), as we highly encourage arts-based research. Please fill out the proposal form by March 15, 2024 (and kindly indicate whether you need an early response for travel plans).
Proposal form can be found on: https://forms.gle/kFoQeEt2A1nmadceA

The conference theme will have two tracks:

- Renaissance Europe
- Shakespeare

For either track, we welcome 15-minute presentations on topics including (but certainly not limited to) the following:

**For the "Renaissance Europe" track:

- Archetypal themes and patterns in Renaissance art
- Renaissance-inspired historical novels
- Modern adaptations of iconic Renaissance paintings, such as Botticelli's Birth of Venus
- Relevance of medieval alchemy today
- Arab Spain
- Renaissance Florence
- Comparative art history
- Ekphrastic responses to Renaissance art
- Influence of Renaissance architecture
- Renaissance-influenced pop music (such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and Ariana Grande)
- Contemporary Renaissance-inspired painting
- The Renaissance-inspired fashion world (Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton, etc.)
- Renaissance influences on modern sciences and medicine
- Renaissance-inspired photography
- Renaissance depictions of magic and the supernatural
- Renaissance women

**For the Shakespeare track:

William Shakespeare: the bard, the playwright, the poet, the actor. You probably quote him on a regular basis without even knowing it. Celestial bodies are named after some characters in his plays. His name has become a brand for bookstores, coffee shops, toys, and cigars, and has even been dubbed by literary scholar Doug Lanier as "the Coca-Cola of canonical culture." How relevant is Shakespeare today? And how far has the playwright's ingenuity resonated across generations and disciplines? The enduring popularity and influence of Shakespeare is a clear testimony to his relevance and contributions to the English language, the arts, and even people's behaviour. Shakespeare still has a significant presence in contemporary culture, ad is ever-present within fields of art across all genres and disciplines. Looking at the impact of Shakespeare, we see that he has greatly contributed to shaping society in various ways while inspiring a new generation of contemporary artists and filmmakers!

From coining thousands of words in English, to new concepts, grammatical structures, and phrases, Shakespeare has shaped the language we still use everyday ("all's well that ends well"). He offered timeless themes, and his plays live on again and constantly evolve and remake themselves through modern adaptations in art, theatre, film, and literature, not only because of his fame, but also because of the universality of his themes and characterization.

We welcome 15-minute presentations on topics including (but certainly not limited to):

- Shakespearean archetypes and universal themes
- Ideas of space and place
- "All the world's a stage": Shakespearean models in characterization and/or drama
- Shakespeare as a brand
- Concepts of dreams and surrealism
- "We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep": Shakespeare-influenced perceptions of different layers of reality
- Shakespearean influences in today's fiction (romance, history, thrillers, mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, etc.)
- Innovative ways of teaching Shakespeare
- Shakespeare and film
- Shakespearean plays as pedagogic tools
- Presentation of the environment and climate change
- "All's well that ends well": Words, phrases, and aphorisms
- "Be not afraid of shadows": Jungian theory and therapy regarding shadow work
- The magical and supernatural
- "Cruel to be kind": Shakespeare and psychology today
- Shakespeare in visual art
- Shakespeare in tourism
- "the lady doth protest too much": feminist takes on Shakespeare
