CFP:

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal has increasingly become a 'mecca' for European expats wishing to relocate. Attracted by sun, beaches, food, culture and a low cost of living, it has been ranked as the world's third most livable city for foreigners. Inevitably, the results of this have been varied. Seen as a boost to the local economy, it also adds to property prices. It places strain on public services like health and transport, and is criticized repeatedly from a social sustainability standpoint. Livable for many then, Lisbon is also a city of challenges for others.

Interested in examining the city as a site of livability across times and places, this conference uses the host city as a point of departure for examining the varied issues at play when we think about livability:

Architecture, urban planning, social integration, community participation, housing, public health, smart city technology, sustainability, resilience, transport, urban economics, heritage, the arts and cultural sectors, and more. Themes are varied and reflect the diversity of perspectives offered by international and interdisciplinary scholars on the notion of the 'livable'.

Call for Papers

Creative people, whether they are visual artists, poets, writers, musicians, designers, or actors (to name a few) have constantly changed the world. We would like to take a closer look at how women have played this vital role. How has women's creativity changed, shaped, and formed the world through impacting different cultures, environments and disciplines?

Why do women write, paint, dance, and perform? Whether as a hobby or a need, women create for various reasons and because of multiple impetuses: they may do so to connect, to inform, to move, and to inspire others. But what has become manifest is that women who create, for whatever purpose, from anywhere in the world, all do so with courage and strength. As Margaret Atwood said about the writing experience, "A word after a word after a word is power."

This conference aims to bring together scholars, creatives, postgraduate students, and professionals to explore and discuss the relationship between the feminine and the arts, whether it appears in history, science, pop culture, or any other epoch or discipline.

We welcome 15-minute presentations (academic and/or creative, from scholars, creatives, graduate students, and professionals.) that reflect this spirit and express aspects and issues of the feminine.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

The feminine in creative non-fiction
Surrealism and magical realism
Portrayal of the female experience in popular culture
The feminine in spirituality
The feminine in nature
Gender bias and underrepresentation of women
The female body
Female sexuality
LGBTQ studies in the arts
The feminine in production
The maternal
Archetypes of the feminine
Goddesses, muses, and classicist influences of women in art
Gender motifs in poetry, fiction, nonfiction
The concept of displacement and female creatives
Women in translation
The concept of liberty
Identity
History through the creative depictions of women
Psychology
Daughters, sisters, spouses
Women and science fiction
The art of writing letters
Biography/autobiography
Poetry and gender
The feminine in ekphrasis
Ghostwriting and women

The London Arts-Based Research Centre | Modernism Remodelled 2025: A Transdisciplinary Conference

The London Arts-Based Research Centre | Modernism Remodelled 2025: A Transdisciplinary Conference
8th to 9th March 2025
Cambridge, United Kingdom

March 8-9: In person participation at Cambridge University and online
March 10: Fully online

Call for Papers
Cost: 180 GBP (in person)
100 GBP (Online)
Abstract: Deadline December 15, 2024

This conference seeks to bring together scholars, creatives, and arts-based researchers working on topics related to modernism and/or the contemporary cultural scenes that may have risen from the modernist period, such as literary studies, psychology, musicology, art studies, architecture, philosophy, film studies, media studies and beyond.

If we look at today's cultural, political, and scientific scene, we find that the pandemic, social and political unrest, technological and medical breakthroughs, new trends in poetry, a renewed interest in classicism and mythology (to name a few) resonate with an era not long ago. We detect a familiar pattern, which can be seen as a recurrence of, or maybe even an extension to, the modernist period. Perhaps, as designer Ellen Lupton put it, "A second modernism has emerged, reinvigorating the utopian search for universal forms that marked the birth of design as a discourse and a discipline nearly a century earlier."

Thus, we would like to explore the following questions: Can we say that we are experiencing a sequel to, or a "second wave" of modernism today? What happened to some of the movements and schools of thought that were born during the modernist period? How have some of them evolved? How have they contributed to the cultural scene today, in both the sciences and the arts?

We aim to come together to explore - and perhaps investigate - the intersections between movements, trends, ideas, sciences and aesthetic methodologies during the modernist period and today.

We welcome 15-minute presentations on comparative studies and research topics related to a full range of approaches to contemporary trends in (but not limited to) the following fields:
Breaking away from conventions (in many areas such as art and lifestyle, etc.)
Modernist art movements (surrealism, cubism, impressionism, futurism, vorticism, etc)
Psychoanalysis
Philosophy
Music
Literature
Media
Architecture and design
Spirituality
Experimentation with language and form
Inter-War periods
Historical comparisons
The emergence of creative collectives
The effects of modernism on contemporary society and its relevance today
The full conference programme, including information regarding the keynote speaker(s) will be announced after the proposal deadline, once all our presenters have been chosen.

**Participants interested in attending the conference without presenting a paper are also welcome.

Call for Papers

"Humor is mankind's greatest blessing." - Mark Twain

(Also, it's a pretty good excuse to host an academic conference where people can laugh while learning!)

Humour has long served as a mirror to society, revealing truths through wit, irony, and laughter. It transcends boundaries, offers comfort in times of hardship, and plays a critical role in cultural, social, and psychological domains. From ancient comedy to modern satire, humour continues to shape how we perceive the world and interact with one another.

The London Arts-Based Research Centre (LABRC) invites submissions for a 3-day online conference exploring the intersections of humour and arts-based research. This virtual transdisciplinary conference invites creatives (including comedians, of course!), scholars, researchers, and practitioners to explore the multifaceted role of humour across different fields, cultures, and historical periods, and to examine how humour can be leveraged as both a subject and method of inquiry.

We encourage 15-minute virtual presentations (both academic and creative formats) that engage with the theme of humour from a wide range of disciplines, including literature, media studies, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, philosophy, and sociology.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Humour in literature, film, and popular culture
The psychology of humour and laughter
Humour as a tool for social critique and political discourse
Humour in the digital age: memes, viral content, and online satire
Cross-cultural perspectives on humour
Humour and mental health: coping mechanisms and resilience
The role of humour in education and pedagogy
Historical perspectives on humour: from ancient to contemporary times
The ethics of humour: boundaries, offense, freedom of expression, and ethical considerations in research contexts
The function of humour in everyday life (eg: in personal and social relationships)
Theoretical frameworks for analysing humour in arts-based research
Case studies of arts-based research projects incorporating humour
Humour as a tool for knowledge dissemination and public engagement
Intersections of humour with other affective dimensions in artistic inquiry
Humour and pedagogy

Crossroads of Literary Creation: Fact, Fiction, and Everything In-between (A Transdisciplinary Conference)

Crossroads of Literary Creation: Fact, Fiction, and Everything In-between (A Transdisciplinary Conference)

5th to 6th February 2025
Online

Fees: 100 GBP
15% discount for LABRC members

Conference Webpage: https://labrc.co.uk/2024/10/21/fact-fiction/

Call for Papers:

"Fiction is the truth inside the lie" - Stephen King

"There is no doubt fiction makes a better job of the truth." - Doris Lessing

How much truth is there in fiction? And how much fiction is there in truth? How does one use research facts to write fiction, and how much of one's imagination can be used to write non-fiction? In the dynamic landscape of storytelling, the lines between fiction and nonfiction have become increasingly blurred, inviting exploration and pushing the boundaries of traditional categorizations. This blending of genres allows for a richer tapestry of narratives, where the emotional truths of nonfiction coalesce with the imaginative expanses of fiction. As writers explore personal experiences, they often infuse their stories with elements of creativity and interpretation, revealing the subjective nature of reality. Conversely, fictional narratives incorporate real-world nuances and complexities, creating a synthesis that challenges conventional distinctions. In this interplay, the storytelling realm becomes a versatile canvas where authenticity meets invention, offering audiences a diverse spectrum of narratives that resonate with the intricate facets of the human experience.

We invite scholars, writers (novelists, poets, biographers, screenwriters, etc.), and literature enthusiasts to participate in this online transdisciplinary conference that explores the dynamic and evolving relationship between fiction and non-fiction in the world of literature. As the lines between these categories continue to blur, we seek to unravel the nuances, challenges, and innovations in this literary landscape.

We welcome proposals for both creative and/or academic 15-minute presentations and responses that engage with, but are not limited to, the following themes:

- Narrative Truth: How do authors navigate the fine line between crafting compelling narratives in fiction and conveying factual information in non-fiction?
- Creative Non-Fiction: What are the innovative approaches in non-fiction that incorporate storytelling techniques to engage readers emotionally and intellectually?
- Metafiction and Autobiographical Fiction: Explore the use of metafiction and autobiographical elements in both fiction and non-fiction and their impact on reader perception.
- Ethics of Blurring Boundaries: Examine the ethical considerations and responsibilities of authors who incorporate elements of fiction into non-fiction works and vice versa.
- Reader's Experience: How do blurred boundaries affect the way readers engage with and interpret literary works? What are the implications for reader reception?
- Historical Fiction and Creative Historical Non-Fiction: Discuss the challenges and opportunities in crafting narratives based on historical events and figures in both fiction and non-fiction.
- Cross-Genre Exploration: Analyse the growing trend of hybrid genres that merge elements of fiction and non-fiction, such as historical novels, docufiction, and speculative non-fiction.
- Digital Storytelling: Explore how digital media and technology have contributed to the fusion of fiction and non-fiction, creating new narrative possibilities.
- Creative readings: writers are welcome to share readings and some of their published or unpublished works, as well as their writing process with the audience.
- Writing Therapy: how do certain forms of fiction or nonfiction writing practices help in articulating and understanding the self.
- Psychological points of view: anything to do with the creative psyche, archetypal works, or the neural pathways in writing, reading, or engaging with fiction/nonfiction.

London Heritages 2025: Critical Questions - Contemporary Practice

A little over 25 years ago, the site of this conference, Maritime Greenwich, London, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Home to the first Palladian building in England, the Royal Naval College by Sir Christopher Wren, the National Maritime Museum, the Old Royal Observatory and the University of Greenwich, it is one of the UK's most important historical sites. It is home to groundbreaking projects in digital heritage, the Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and a variety of major arts and cultural events annually. It is promoted by its 'state-of-the-art' visitor centre and ardently protected by the UK's Listed Buildings and Conservation Acts. It is a quintessential site of world heritage.

However, as a site located in the city of London, it feels the pressures of economic and urban development. It is threatened by the strains of mass tourism and can be at risk of over exposure. It is located near areas of social deprivation and its buildings and parks are in need of continual, and costly, maintenance. Managing the site for local residents, the heritage community and visitors is complex and can be contested. In this regard, Maritime Greenwich is also the epitome of the difficulties faced across the heritage sector, the world over.

Using the World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich as a point of departure, this conference seeks to explore the way in which various disciplines interact with the heritage sector to answer the questions critical to its future.
