London Heritages 2025: Critical Questions - Contemporary Practice

A little over 25 years ago, the site of this conference, Maritime Greenwich, London, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Home to the first Palladian building in England, the Royal Naval College by Sir Christopher Wren, the National Maritime Museum, the Old Royal Observatory and the University of Greenwich, it is one of the UK's most important historical sites. It is home to groundbreaking projects in digital heritage, the Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and a variety of major arts and cultural events annually. It is promoted by its 'state-of-the-art' visitor centre and ardently protected by the UK's Listed Buildings and Conservation Acts. It is a quintessential site of world heritage.

However, as a site located in the city of London, it feels the pressures of economic and urban development. It is threatened by the strains of mass tourism and can be at risk of over exposure. It is located near areas of social deprivation and its buildings and parks are in need of continual, and costly, maintenance. Managing the site for local residents, the heritage community and visitors is complex and can be contested. In this regard, Maritime Greenwich is also the epitome of the difficulties faced across the heritage sector, the world over.

Using the World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich as a point of departure, this conference seeks to explore the way in which various disciplines interact with the heritage sector to answer the questions critical to its future.

SPECIAL FOCUS: Global Sports Local Cultures
The Sixteenth International Conference on Sport and Society will delve into the politics of globalisation and how it reshapes sports, as well as its complex relations with local cultures and cities.
Sport is both a cultural practice and a global product. As a cultural practice, sport brings people together and creates a sense of belonging. It also contributes to individuals' wellbeing and the development of physical and social skills. As a global product, sport is shaped by global economic flows and practices that monetise fan engagement and commodify athletes' labour. The confluence of sport as a cultural practice and a global product creates tensions and fractures as to how communities shape sports to become a force for social good locally.
The Special Focus of the Sixteenth International Conference on Sport and Society delves into these tensions and fractures and invites submissions that examines the roles of global sports and how they are re-contextualised within local cultures and communities.

CFP:

Today, the spaces and societies in which we live are infused with media and technology. Simultaneously, there are places and practices untouched and unaltered by the effects of technology - whether due to a lack of resources or a reactionary response to change. The questions this raises are boundless and interlinked. They are relevant across spaces, times and disciplines: architecture, urbanism, heritage, sociology, transport, business, education, politics and more.

In response to this scenario, SOCIETY. SPACES. SCREENS asks you to critique contemporary practice in your own discipline. It asks whether it has, or has not, been altered by advances in technologies and medias. For example, CAD involves new modes of design in architecture, while architects champion participatory planning. Urban data informs the management of cities, while the phenomenological experience of space is central to its use. Spatial computing brings disruptive change to public engagement and the 'democratic process'. At the same time, there are political forces rejecting a future of remote and absentee voting. Social media alters how we interact in spatial settings, yet reports daily on acts in physical space.

In every discipline then, technological advances find their analogue parallels. In exploring the interconnected questions we face today when critiquing the society and spaces in which we live from this perspective, this conference is open to various questions and welcomes contributions from across disciplines.

SPECIAL FOCUS: Oceanic Journeys: Multicultural Approaches in the Humanities

The Twenty-Third International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities is a vibrant and inclusive gathering that unites scholars, researchers, and practitioners from diverse backgrounds. Hosted by the University of Hawaii at Hilo, this conference serves as a dynamic platform for scholarly exchange and collaboration. Participants converge to explore fresh perspectives, innovative practices, and interdisciplinary dialogues within the realm of humanities.

This year's theme "Oceanic Journeys: Multicultural Approaches in the Humanities" not only brings into focus the rich cultural tapestry of the Pacific region, but also celebrates the multifaceted narratives of all lands as oceans bind and connect us all on this planet. We invite scholars to embark on voyages across disciplinary, geographic and cultural boundaries with the following themes and beyond:

Critical Cultural Studies: In the context of oceanic journeys, critical cultural studies examine how cultural identities intersect, evolve, and adapt within the global expanse. This can also include exploration of indigenous knowledge, diaspora experiences and studies, the impact of globalization on local cultures, and the relationship of humanities to technology, the learning sciences, economics and knowledge domains.

Communication and Linguistics Studies: Language serves as a vessel for oceanic journeys - connecting distant shores, preserving oral traditions, and facilitating cross-cultural exchange. Investigating communication and human interactions, representation and expression through art, media, technology and design, linguistic diversity, language revitalization efforts, and the role of communication technologies in bridging communities are just some of the ways we honor the power of words and their ability to transcend borders and unite minds.

Literary Humanities: Literature has always been a vehicle for exploration and discovery. The literary ocean beckons us with tales of migration, resilience, and cultural hybridity. From ancient oral epics to contemporary novels, the literary ocean invites us to explore its depths of life and imagination through richly layered storytelling.

Civic, Political and Community Studies: From climate change to sovereignty struggles, oceanic communities grapple with tides of change that affect the entire planet. Civic engagement, human formations of families, institutions, organizations, states, societies and communities, human rights, and globalization become our compass, guiding us toward a more just, peaceful and resilient world.

Humanities Education: Education is a transformative voyage. We reflect on pedagogical approaches in the humanities and humanistic social sciences that include honoring Indigenous knowledge systems, integrating traditional practices and fostering intercultural understanding. How can humanistic education empower learners to navigate the vast ocean of ideas and currents of the 21st century?

The program features thoughtful, meaningful exploration, cultural exchange and a celebration of the oceanic journeys that shape our shared humanity. Join us as we set sail together on this scholarly voyage, charting a multicultural approach to the humanities towards intercultural understanding, one that transcends disciplinary, geographic and cultural boundaries.

Founded in 2003, the New Directions in the Humanities Research Network is brought together by a common interest in established traditions in the humanities while at the same time developing innovative practices and setting a renewed agenda for their future. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. As a Research Network, we are defined by our scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions.
