San Francisco LEARNING . LIFE . WORK - CONFERENCE CALL Dates: 10-12 June, 2024 Place: San Francisco & virtual Abstracts: 01 Dec, 2023 (Round 1) 01 May, 2024 (Round 2) https://amps-research.com/conference/san-francisco-learning/ PUBLISHERS: UCL Press (Journals): Routledge, Taylor and Francis (Books) ORGANISERS: California Institute of Integral Studies; AMPS CALL: Today, education is often defined as hybrid. Hybrid delivery in-class and online. Mixed theories of teaching and practice. Cross-disciplinary courses and programs. Alternative modes of enquiry. Community and student engagement. Concepts of explorative learning. Multicultural perspectives on subjects. The combined arts and sciences of STEAM – to name but a few. The same hybridity is true of life and work. We value a work-life balance. We seek self fulfilment in professional contexts. We see education as continual through professional development and life-long learning. In this context, education plays many roles, and serves many people and purposes. It takes on many forms. In embracing this hybridity, the Learning. Life. Work. conference seeks to explore the numerous ways education morphs and blurs – through varied methodologies across a multitude of disciplines, geographies, and mind sets. As such it welcomes perspectives from the arts and humanities, design and media studies, science and technology, education and training, health and the social sciences. In this diversity, the event reflects the place and institution in which it is set: the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. A city famous for its counter culture, history of gay rights, its Hispanic heritage, Asian diaspora and its cutting edge arts scene. It is a place renowned for alternative models of thought. Home to the first free public school on California, San Francisco has also spearheaded various education initiatives in United States. It implemented the Indian Education Program in the 1970s, supporting Native American communities. It led in the adaption of the Beacon Initiative to use schools for community needs, and it is home to one of the largest publicly funded university systems in the United States. Welcoming delegates from locations across the world to consider the future hybridities of teaching and learning, we aim to share perspectives and disseminate best practices. We look to educators, students, artists, theorists, and industry professionals. We hope to share initiatives, programs, and projects. Teaching Beyond the Curriculum
TEACHING BEYOND THE CURRICULUM – ABSTRACT DEADLINE UK, USA, CHINA Virtual Conference: Dates: 15-17 Nov, 2023 Place: Virtual Abstract Deadline: 5 October, 2023 https://amps-research.com/conference/teaching-2023/ UNIVERSITY ORGANISERS: University of Louisiana, United States | Glasgow School of Art, United Kingdom | Wenzhou-Kean University, China. PUBLISHERS: Routledge, Taylor and Francis | UCL Press CALL: The number of ways we have thought about education over time is vast. From Socrates to John Dewey, and Jean Piaget to Paulo Freire, our understanding of learning has evolved and morphed. The concepts and theories we manage range from learning for learning's sake to vocational training; from a liberal arts education to on-the-job training; and from student centered learning to research informed teaching. Today then, our definitions and models of teaching are vast. In an age of ever faster change and innovation, this plethora of concepts expands incessantly. As we adapt to the radical disruptions of the technological turn post COVID, it can be overwhelming. What this all results in for teachers and learners alike, is an open, and sometimes contested, question. In considering the education sector as now operating 'beyond the curriculum', this conference examines how our teaching has morphed in recent years. Its premise is that we always have, and increasingly need to do more than 'simply teach'. In teaching students to be 'information literate', we provide them with skills for life. In encouraging critical thinking, we help navigate a changed tomorrow. In focusing on transferable skills, we prepare them for complex futures. Through community engagement, we open students to socially conscious models of work. In the new tech-classroom, we do this by combining contemporary tools with established bodies of knowledge.
