*Abstract*

The presentation provide evidence on the capital reallocation effect of temporary federal tax incentives using data on a broad range of $298.6 billion worth of equipment purchases, spread over 3.32 million equipment transactions by 688,000 small businesses during 1998-2019. It is found that accelerated depreciation encourages the utilization of new capital goods. The tax subsidy on new equipment increases the supply of old equipment and lowers the old equipment's relative price. The reduced cost of old equipment thus eases the capital constraints for some small businesses and encourages business entry. Empirical results from the exercise highlights how investment in new capital goods motivated by tax incentives fosters reallocation of old capital goods to small businesses.

Webinar on New Monetary Policy in the Wake of GFC and the Pandemic

*Please forward to your interested peers, scholars, students and colleagues*

 Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has come when the global economy was already under considerable stress as it was recovering from the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008-09 and many of the emergent measures that were put in place to combat the GFC were still operative. simultaneously needed.
In particular, interest rates were at historic lows in many countries and fiscal deficits and public debts were at high levels. This implies that the scope for expansionary monetary and fiscal policies is rather limited. Furthermore, policy measures to mend broken supply chains and restore confidence are also simultaneously needed.
So, what sort of macroeconomic policies should be adopted? The double punch of the GFC followed by the pandemic has made it difficult to pursue either traditional monetary policy or traditional fiscal policy. This is particularly true against a background of continued deficient aggregate demand compounded during the pandemic by broken supply chains for the world economy.
This lecture will deal with these issues and provide a rationale for monetary and fiscal policy to work together rather than having an independent monetary policy. This lecture draws on Chapter IX of my forthcoming book:
MACROECONOMICS FOR DEVELOPMENT: PROGNOSIS AND PROSPECTS
Gloucestershire, UK, Edward Elgar, forthcoming 2022
This book hs two chapters on macroeconomics during the pandemic. This lecture covers the second chapter.

Myanmar Geopolitical Implications-for India (Webinar)@ EGROW

To receive e-certificate of participation please register free at

Abstract
Myanmar and India share an umbilical relationship going back to the British era when they were ruled as one nation till 1937. The cordial relations continued even after both countries became independent almost at the same time and embraced democracy. On the other hand China-Myanmar relations  have seen a lot of undulations in the last 70 years of Myanmar's existence. However in the last three decades there has been a total flip in the relations leading to Myanmar's Military regime becoming almost a colony of China. The restoration of democracy in 2015 elections saw the return of a civilian government, heralding a new era of development and changes. The recent times has  seen the lifting of economic sanctions by the western world and thus lowering of dependency on China.

Undoubtedly the two Asian giants, India and China have strong strategic interests in Myanmar. While maintaining their newly formed identity, Myanmar is deftly engaged in the balancing relations with them. The discussion will focus on the current situation in Myanmar and its geopolitical implications for India

Religion and The Rise of Capitalism @EGROW

 Abstract
Critics of contemporary economics complain that belief in free markets--among economists as well as many ordinary citizens--is a form of religion. And, it turns out, that in a deeper, more historically grounded sense there is something to that idea. Contrary to the conventional historical view of economics as an entirely secular product of the Enlightenment, Benjamin M. Friedman demonstrates that religion exerted a powerful influence from the outset. Friedman makes clear how the foundational transition in thinking about what we now call economics, beginning in the eighteenth century, was decisively shaped by the hotly contended lines of religious thought within the English-speaking Protestant world. Beliefs about God-given human character, about the after-life, and about the purpose of our existence, were all under scrutiny in the world in which Adam Smith and his contemporaries lived. Friedman explores how those debates go far in explaining the puzzling behavior of so many of our fellow citizens whose views about economic policies--and whose voting behavior--seems sharply at odds with what would be to their own economic benefit. Illuminating the origins of the relationship between religious thinking and economic thinking, together with its ongoing consequences, Friedman provides invaluable insights into our current economic policy debates and demonstrates ways to shape more functional policies for all citizens.
