The Asian Conference on Arts and Humanities 2018 (ACAH2018)

The final submission deadline for the Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities is approaching. Submit your abstract by January 11, 2018 and join IAFOR and participants from around the world for ACAH2018, held March 30 – April 1, 2018 in Kobe, Japan.

***Conference Theme: "Recentering: Asian Spaces, Cultures and Ideas in the 21st Century"

If globalisation is characterised by simultaneous networks of information, has the concept of centres become obsolete? Or do certain recent geopolitical developments – the fading of America's "global leadership" being counterbalanced by the rise of China's, the latter's new Belt and Road Initiative promising to become a new Silk Road, Britain's exit from the EU, and the newly proposed trade agreements between Japan and Europe – put the world on the verge of a radical recentering? Will the burgeoning mega-cities in Asia displace the traditional nation-state in the competition for capital, status and enhanced technologies?

Scholars and students of the humanities have long questioned the extent to which shifts in formations of power – empires, countries, regions, cities – resonate through cultural practices that centre on literary and aesthetic meaning, expression and representation. This provokes further questions about how such centres can be identified, defined and represented; and about their relations of other types and modes of centering. Is cultural prestige dependent on political centrality? Or can it be achieved through the circulation of forms and aesthetics that operate in their own economy? For that matter, what is central to its meanings and valuations of culture?

What of the humanities themselves? Fears of their marginalisation are based on the assumption that they were once central, and that the only way to restore their former authority is to argue against their subordination to scientific, technological or vocational forms of education. Can the humanities find new life in multi- or cross-disciplinary frameworks? How can they survive the dominant trend towards more marketable or "useful" forms of education? What is central to the humanities? Should older disciplines such as Literature and Aesthetics reinvent themselves as it be Cultural Studies? Or should they now concentrate on comprehending their own historical genealogies in relation to current scholarly practices?

There is also the question of why, in the wake of postcolonial and transnational decenterings, do elite Anglo-American universities retain so much of their cultural capital? How might humanities redefine themselves if recentred in Asian institutions? Is it possible for the prevailing discourses of Western humanism to be combined with Asian values, goals and traditions? Could such a transformation help to rehabilitate the humanities' current beleaguered status in America and Europe?

Our present historical moment compels us to think through the implications of these and other modes of recentering. The Asian Conference on Arts and Humanities 2018 provides an opportunity for academics, artists, writers and students to explore the challenges of multi-faceted and interdisciplinary rethinkings of the ways we imagine, articulate and work with centres.

We invite proposals that deal with any aspect of recentering, and offer a following list of possible areas of exploration that can be found on the homepage of the conference website.

In conjunction with our Global Partners, Including Osaka University and Lehigh University, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2018.

The 2018 International Conference on Industry, Business and Social Sciences (IBSS 2018)

The 2018 International Conference on Industry, Business and Social Sciences (IBSS 2018)
22nd to 24th August 2018
Tokyo, Japan

Dear Colleagues,

Hi, this is IBSS Secretary - Ya-Jyun. We are pleased to announce that the 2018 International Conference on Industry, Business and Social Sciences (IBSS 2018) will take place at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan on August 22-24, 2018.

Based on the 2017 Tokyo International joint Conferences that had received 416 submissions from 45 countries, with an acceptance rate of approximately 75.72% and a registration rate of around 85.08% of the accepted papers, the 2018 Waseda Tokyo International joint Conferences thus are expected to attract more worldwide participants than that in 2017. IBSS is an international platform for scholars, researchers and practitioners to discuss interdisciplinary research and practices in the fields of Industry, Business and Social Sciences. Therefore, during the three-day conference, all participants will have plenty of opportunities exchanging ideas, findings and the latest research results, engaging in many academic and industry events, and meeting peers from different countries. We believe participants can share their viewpoints from different perspectives and expose to the cross-domain communicating and learning atmosphere through the interdisciplinary joint conferences. For detailed information regarding IBSS 2018, please browse the official website http://ibss2018.gaics.org which has been activated to the public since the early December, 2017.

The Asian Conference on Education and International Development 2018

Dear Colleague,

The final submission deadline is approaching. We invite your participation in The Asian Conference on Education & International Development 2018 (ACEID2018), so submit your abstract by January 10, 2018.

Every year, we strive to explore the nexus between educational policies, practices and theories, along with development of the global world towards sustainability and positive change. This year's conference theme is "Surviving and Thriving: Education in Times of Change". Whether we are looking at how education has changed or will change, or how education has changed or will change us, we understand that change affects us all. As administrators, teacher educators, teachers, educational policy leaders, students or community members, we all come face-to-face with change, often on a daily basis.

We know that change is not only about test scores or proficiency going up; it is also about lasting change in one's life and life choices, and, looking beyond ourselves as individuals, in the larger society that we live in. Thus, we invite you to contribute to this 2018 conference on educating for positive change in our lives and in the world at large. At the conference, we hope to examine change in ways that are important to us as individuals, as well as the challenges, complexities and constraints of educating for change. Our goal is to offer wide-ranging conversations from a multitude of disciplines, including all areas of education, community development, the arts and business.

Please join us to help unpack how to educate for change, to share your research, to contribute to international development, and to engage in important conversations around social sustainability in an ever-changing world.

We hope to see you in Kobe, March 26–28, 2018.

Our best regards,

2nd Global Conference: Music and... Nationalism

2nd Global Conference: Music &... Nationalism
29th to 30th June 2018
Palermo, Italy

The spectre of national anthems being sung at mass events, political rallies and the use of pop music and established musicians providing endorsements at political rallies suggest that the relationship between music and the spirit nationalism is as strong as it has been since its emergence as a feature of 19th century romantic music. This conference aims to bring together interdisciplinary research perspectives on the relationship between music and nationalism.

Current political change and visions of the reconfiguration of political landscapes at the local and global scale provide the opportunity for a new critical reassessment of the relationship between music and nationalism. Has music become such a transnational force that the effect of music as tool to engender nationalism in the public psyche no longer has any efficacy? What are the current trends in the relationship between music and political movements? Is the role of sentimentalism as a counter to intellectualism still the same in nationalistic music as it was in the romantic period? Is the relationship between the use and abuse of music and nationalism still fraught with the dangers common to the political propaganda of the 19th and 20th centuries in the glorification of the nation state? Does music have a role to play at all in contemporary politics? It is the aim of this conference to explore these and related questions and issues.

Part of the Progressive Connexions series Music &..., we invite submissions that may deal with but are not limited to:

~ National anthems
~ Nationalism, music and identity formation
~ Music and the building of the nation state
~ Specific political ideologies and music (e.g. Fascism, communism, anarchism)
~ Composers
~ Nationalism and the choral tradition
~ Historical perspectives
~ Music and political propaganda
~ Sentimentalism, emotionalism and anti-intellectualism
~ Transnational music
~ Mythologies
~ Opera and nationalism
~ Music as a tool for assimilation
~ Music, nationalism and ethics
~ Aesthetics
~ Protest music, activist anthems, musics of resistance
~ Folk music traditions, folk idioms and heritage
~ Nationalism and popular music cultures (e.g. Brit pop, J-pop, punk music, heavy metal etc.)
~ Nationalism, music and mass events
~ Nationalism, music and sport
~ Musicology and nationalism
~ Media representations of music and nationalism
~ Lyrics and meaning
~ Warfare and conflict
~ Memory, remembrance, emotion
~ Music, nationalism and film

Our main goal is to facilitate dialogue and spark innovative collaborations and discussions at an international level, in a dynamic and interactive setting. Thus, we welcome participants from all relevant disciplines, professions and vocations (NGO personnel, aid workers, researchers, mental and physical health professionals, educators, human rights activists, counsellors, social workers, policy makers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, business owners, military personnel, composers, customs workers and members of the border patrol, labour specialists, historians, sociologists, psychologists, economists, anthropologists, ethnographers social media experts, artists and many more)

In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 11th May 2018.

What's so Special About Progressive Connexions Events?
A fresh, friendly, dynamic format – at Progressive Connexions we are dedicated to breaking away from the stuffy, old-fashion conference formats, where endless presentations are read aloud off PowerPoints. We work to bring you an interactive format, where exchange of experience and information is alternated with captivating workshops, engaging debates and round tables, time set aside for getting to know each other and for discussing common future projects and initiatives, all in a warm, relaxed, egalitarian atmosphere.

A chance to network with international professionals – the beauty of our interdisciplinary events is that they bring together professionals from all over the world and from various fields of activity, all joined together by a shared passion. Not only will the exchange of experience, knowledge and stories be extremely valuable in itself, but we seek to create lasting, ever-growing communities around our projects, which will become a valuable resource for those belonging to them.

A chance to be part of constructing change – There is only one thing we love as much as promoting knowledge: promoting real, lasting social change by encouraging our participants to take collective action, under whichever form is most suited to their needs and expertise (policy proposals, measuring instruments, research projects, educational materials, etc.) We will support all such actions in the aftermath of the event as well, providing a platform for further discussions, advice from the experts on our Project Advisory Team and various other tools and intellectual resources, as needed.

An opportunity to discuss things that matter to you – Our events are not only about discussing how things work in the respective field, but also about how people work in that field – what are the struggles, problems and solutions professionals have found in their line of work, what are the areas where better communication among specialists is needed and how the interdisciplinary approach can help bridge those gaps and help provide answers to questions from specific areas of activity.

An unforgettable experience – When participating in a Progressive Connexions event, there is a good chance you will make some long-time friends. Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are suited to the history and culture of the event.

Ethos
Progressive Connexions believes it is a mark of personal courtesy and professional respect to your colleagues that all delegates should attend for the full duration of the meeting. If you are unable to make this commitment, please do not submit an abstract or proposal for presentation.

Please note: Progressive Connexions is a not-for-profit network and we are not in a position to be able to assist with conference travel or subsistence, nor can we offer discounts off published rates and fees.
