***ACE2017 Conference Theme: "Educating for Change"

Why are we in teaching and learning if not to be able to help enrich the lives of our students? Educational institutions at all levels, and of all types, should continue to strive for social change in today's world. Beyond the apparent simplicity of our conference theme, however, there is great scope for wide-ranging responses to the question of just how we go about educating for change, by examining the inherent challenges and responsibilities faced by educators the world over.

Education, too frequently, is the victim of politics, and, worse, sometimes ideologies. Politicians and bureaucrats devise and implement policies to effect change that range from curriculum structure and goals to manipulating budgets on behalf of interest groups and their lobbyists. Questions relating to accountability, transparent governance and community relations are too frequently avoided.

Within the classroom itself, bridging the gap between policy, theory and practice, whether traditional or virtual, teachers and professors de facto become, at varying levels, agents for change. Beyond providing students with resources for study in given fields, they also support them by often being seen as acting not merely as mentors, but also as role models.

These issues are part of the global transformation affecting all human civilisation. How can we as teachers function effectively in a very uncertain environment? How do we help to equip our students with the intellectual and existential tools they require? How do we narrow the gap between theory and practice? How do we make decisions about curriculum and course context in the face of political pressure and social norms? What is the role of interdisciplinary studies in educating for change? And, at the macro level, how can we stimulate awareness of issues such as education assisting the promotion of social justice?

This conference, part of IAFOR's global conference series on education, in its broadest sense brings together teachers, researchers and distinguished professors from around the world to share their insights. The goal is to broaden awareness of different contexts in the pursuit of synergies and solutions. We look forward to your active participation in this vital field of future-oriented academic activity of The International Academic Forum.

In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017.

Featured Presentation: Change in Education: By Whom? For Whom?
Dr Yvonne Masters, University of New England, Australia

Heraclitus has been credited with saying that "change is the only constant in life". In education, change is definitely constant, but this has many different meanings. Both in the classroom and in the corridors of policy, change is continuous, often under the banner of "education FOR change". However, the deeper questions revolve around for whom the change is meant and by whom the change is to be implemented. This is particularly the case in the arena of teacher education. Taking examples from the current Australian context, this presentation explores changes in teacher education policy in terms of both teacher candidate selection and programme accreditation. It will be demonstrated how the selection changes being implemented are exclusionary with the potential to perpetuate social injustices. There will also be exploration of the narrowing of curriculum offerings through the new accreditation process, resulting in a more mechanistic education for children in schools. The presentation will conclude by comparing the context in Australia with other international contexts and raising the question as to how best to educate our future teachers for the changes they will be asked to implement in their classrooms.

Further programming for ACE2017 will be announced in the coming weeks and months.

***ECLL2017 Conference Theme: "Educating for Change"

Whether we are looking at why we must change, or how education has changed or even how education will change, change affects all of us involved in language education in many ways. Administrators, teacher trainers, teachers, students: we all wear many hats and we all come face-to-face with change, sometimes on a daily basis. Positive change is about improvement: improving proficiency, improving lives, helping learners achieve their goals and dreams and ultimately, broadening horizons.

In our work as educators we are often asked to effect change – that we are change-makers can be seen in the new curriculums, new material, and even new techniques or methods that we develop. For those of us who conduct research, our research is often focused on finding "better" or more effective ways of teaching often measured in outcomes such as students entered with an average of X and improved to an average of Y. In such a case, improvement = change! But change is also an area of research as can be seen by looking at journals such as the Journal of Educational Change, Changes in Higher Education, Culture and Change, and Educational Research for Social Change, to mention four. It is a serious area of study, and one worth our attention.

The focus of the last journal mentioned above is worth looking at. Change is not only about test scores or proficiency going up. It is also about lasting change in one's life, life choices, and looking beyond us as individuals to the society we live in. Social change and a focus on improving the societies we live in is another outcome of education. In recent years, there has been a focus on language and identity, as well as an embrace of sociocultural theory and language development.

At the same time change for the sake of change is not a good reason for change. There is often a tension between the status quo (which is not always bad) and the desire to change. As invested members of our field, we need to be able to examine change, identifying and applying that which is appropriate and will further our goals while also having the wisdom and gumption to reject change that does not make sense. As Dewey said, "Reforms which rest simply upon the enactment of law, or the threatening of certain penalties, or upon changes in mechanical or outward arrangements are transitory and futile."

And so we welcome you to this year's conferences, where we can examine change in ways that are important to each of us. What are its challenges, its complexities, and its constraints? It is electrifying to think about the wide-ranging conversations we will have as we consider how we can go about educating for change the world over.

In conjunction with our global partners, including the University of Sussex and Birkbeck, University of London, UK, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017.

**Featured Panel: Educating for Change: Educating for Global Citizenship
Featured Panel Chair: Dr Joseph Haldane, Chairman and CEO, IAFOR

UNESCO considers global citizenship education to consist of "Nurturing respect for all, building a sense of belonging to a common humanity and helping learners become responsible and active global citizens." This panel will look at the ways in which language teachers in particular are positioned to educate for global citizenship, and indeed carry a particular responsibility, burden or opportunity to engage with this concept.

The panellists will discuss how language can shape identities and transform students, drawing on their personal experience of the transformative effects of language on their students as well as on themselves.

**Spotlight Presentation: Enhancing the Development of Law Students' Critical Reasoning Skills Through the Use of Complex Decision-Forcing Case Studies
Professor Charles Wild, University of Hertfordshire, UK

Traditionally, an integral part of the educational strategies of business schools, law schools and medical schools has centred on the use of case studies. Whilst each discipline has, over time, adopted their own approach to case studies, ranging from the case method utilised by business schools through to the casebook method used by law schools, the aim remains to encourage students to engage in intensive discussion and detailed analysis of the scenario. The format relies on students having read the underlying discipline-specific theory and being prepared to apply that knowledge to the specific themes and climate forces at work within the case study. In other words, the aim is to shift the educational focus from teaching students WHAT to think, to teaching them HOW to think; to develop and enhance their wicked skills, including that of critical reasoning. Based on their experience within both business and law schools, coupled with their extensive use of the case study method, the authors propose: 1) The use of case studies addresses key HE concerns relating to student employability and the development of key wicked skills; 2) Whilst traditionally, disciplines such as business and law have developed differing formats to the use of case studies, the adoption of a multi-disciplinary approach to case studies is essential. The authors will use the example of their successful Legal Risk Management, Governance and Compliance course, where law students have addressed both classic and complex decision-forcing case studies, requiring them to engage in real-world, multi-disciplinary scenarios.

Further programming will be announced in the coming weeks and months.

Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos 2017

Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos 2017
8-12 November 2017, Funchal, Madeira Portugal
http://www.islandcities.org/icua2017.html

This conference brings together researchers from across the globe to explore urban life on islands and archipelagos.

Islands are often associated with peripherality, yet even remote, sparsely populated islands host urban centres. In the case of some small islands, physical separation from the mainland and spatial limitations can encourage dense urbanisation, the transport of products and ideas, improved defence infrastructure, construction of social capital, consolidation of political power, formation of vibrant cultures, population concentration, and ultimately the development of major cities.

Fostering dialogue between the fields of island studies and urban studies, this interdisciplinary conference will feature presentations that explore and critique the varied connections between the urban and the insular from a diversity of perspectives on culture, planning, politics, architecture, economy, and environment in island cities worldwide. We welcome papers and panels focusing on individual case studies as well comparative analyses and conceptual frames.

This conference is a collaboration between Island Dynamics and the University of Madeira's Research Centre for Regional and Local Studies. Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos 2017 takes place in association with the III INSULA International Colloquium: Beyond Nature & Artifice.

This conference is a collaboration of Island Dynamics, INSULA, and the University of Madeira's Research Centre for Regional and Local Studies (CIERL).

Keynote speakers: Keller Easterling (Yale University), Lindsay Bremner (University of Westminister), May Joseph (Pratt Institute), Olivia Bina (University of Lisbon), Irene Lucília Andrade (Literary Writer, Madeira), Teresa M. G. Jardim (Artist and Writer, Madeira)

About Funchal, Madeira: The Autonomous Region of Madeira is an Atlantic archipelago to the west of Morocco. Madeira is a major tourism destination, but the islands are also famous for their wine, endemic flora and fauna, and natural beauty. Although remote from the Portuguese mainland, Madeira came to serve as a key point for transatlantic transport and exchange. Even today, the International Business Centre of Madeira free trade zone means that the islands have a financial reach extending far beyond their own coasts. Funchal (population 112,000) is Madeira's capital. Founded in 1424, this historic city possesses a wealth of cultural heritage.

About the conference: Conference presentations will be held on 9-11 November. The afternoon of 8 November and the morning and early afternoon of 12 November will be devoted to excursions beyond the city, out into Madeira's stunning mountain and marine environments.

How to make a presentation: Presentations are welcome on any aspect of urban island studies. The deadline for abstracts is 31 May 2017. You can propose a presentation here: http://www.islandcities.org/icua2017/cfp.html

Presentations are invited to address such as questions:
- How does islandness sustain processes of urbanisation?
- How can urban planning and urban design address the challenges faced by island societies?
- Why are islands historically privileged sites for urban development?
- How does islandness influence urban cultures?
- What roles do island cities play in national, regional, and global frameworks and processes?
- How does urbanisation affect island society and environment?
- How does island city status affect distributions of political authority?
- How do urban archipelagos relate to their hinterlands and oceanic environments?
- How are island cultures reconstituted in (mainland) urban diasporas?
- What challenges do island environments pose to urban development and planning?
- How does the particular mobility of island populations shape the development of island cities?
- What other topics are critical to the future of island cities?
