The IAFOR International Conference on the City 2017 (City2017)
Join us in Kobe this summer for The IAFOR International Conference on the City 2017 (City2017), July 14–16, 2017. ***City2017 at a glance The IAFOR International Conference on the City 2017 (City2017) will be held in parallel to The IAFOR International Conference on Global Studies 2017 (Global2017) in the diverse and culturally-rich city of Barcelona, Spain. Submit your abstract now to participate in this international, interdisciplinary and intercultural event. **Location: NH Collection Barcelona Constanza, Barcelona, Spain **Dates: Friday, July 14 – Sunday, July 16, 2017 **Abstract Submission Deadline: February 28, 2017 **Early Bird Registration Deadline: March 29, 2017 **Enquiries: city@iafor.org SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT: iafor.org/city2017-call-for- Already had your abstract accepted? Register now: iafor.org/city2017- To find out about registration packages, presentation options, conference events and more, please visit the conference website: city.iafor.org ------------- ***City2017 Conference Theme: "Cities of the World. World Cities." History has long shown an ambivalence towards the city. On the one hand, it has been the metropolis, a necessary, vital site of commerce and culture. On the other it has been considered the fallen place, at once dangerous and shadowed in crime. This ambivalence holds across continents, from the Americas to Asia, from Europe to Australasia. How, in an age of transnationalism and global media, should we regard these cities? What are our prevailing images of the city as past and present, magnet and threat? Do cities retain their lustre as citadels of enlightenment and art or are they urban dinosaurs wracked by over-crowdedness and pollution? IAFOR's forthcoming conference on the city is an exciting addition to our global conference calendar. It will place the international, intercultural and interdisciplinary tenets of IAFOR at the very heart of multiple academic approaches to the city, from the development of the classic city states east and west, to the emergence of the vast organisms that are our modern cities. Different cities have very different personalities, influenced, for example, by history, government, climate, and geographical location – from uptight financial powerhouses to relaxed tourist resorts, they are governed in different ways, and compete against each other for attention and resources, sometimes domestically, but also with other foreign rivals. This conference encourages interdisciplinary and comparative reflections from the world's cities, from small cathedral city to sprawling metropolis. The city has always been a centre of creativity and imagination. The many cultures that are formed within the city have become definitive of the development of human civilisation in different eras. From the cities that were the product of the ancient river civilisations on the Nile and the Tigris Euphrates or the Ganges and the Yellow River, to the classical and medieval city states, to the modern cities of the industrial revolution, the city provides an exciting object of study. The conference is set up to encourage the exploration of the city in all its variations and to provide a further context for reflections on globalisation as the wave of today and tomorrow. This conference will provide a counter to the localised perspectives that can easily obscure the simple fact that many of the world's major cities have now become, more than ever, global portals and places of international exchange. Registration for either of these conferences will allow participants to attend sessions in the other. We invite academics from around the world to join us in the fascinating historical, cultural and artistic centre of Barcelona, to exchange ideas and participate in the continuing story of this city. – The City2017 Organising Committee (iafor.org/city2017-committee) ------------- ***Programme **Keynote Presentation – Memory and the Modern City Dr Simon Sleight, King's College London, UK Densely populated, cities are also thickly inhabited by memories. This lecture explores the processes by which some aspects of the past are physically or emotionally inscribed into the built landscape, while others are overlooked or forgotten. It seeks to determine who gets to influence acts of concerted remembering, considers the actions of those who contest or adapt "official" versions of historical memory, and assesses the place of intangible cultural heritage and personal memory amidst ever-evolving city settings. Taking a comparative and international view, the lecture addresses the past as it lives and dies in the modern city. Ranging from Japan via Australia and on to Europe, South Africa and the United States, the analysis takes in street names, archaeological digs, sites of memory including graveyards and Ground Zero, and fleeting moments of play and courtship. Surveying a diverse urban scene, the lecture offers some methodological pointers for engaging with memory and the city, ponders the contributions of significant scholars including Halbwachs, Hayden and Huyssen, and evaluates the first-hand experiences of walking city streets to bear witness to the past residing in the present. **Keynote Presentation – Intersectional Realities, Law and Belonging. Not? Professor Adrien Katherine Wing, University of Iowa College of Law, USA In this presentation, I focus on the legal status of women of color around the world under national and international law. Such women face an intersectional reality where their various identities, including race, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation, cause them to face precarious conditions both literally and figuratively. I will use critical legal networks jurisprudence to illustrate how a state of belonging can be achieved formally and informally wherever they may be located as part of a coalitional approach to transcendence. **Featured Presentation – Refuge: Refugee: Moonlight and Precarious Love Professor Baden Offord, Curtin University, Australia In this presentation, I focus on the human condition in relation to people's suffering around their sexuality. Catalysed by Michel Foucault's observation that "People's suffering must never be allowed to remain the silent residue of politics", my intention is to explore those cultural spaces available, beyond the silent residue, where suffering is transformed into refuge, where recognition flourishes in surprising ways. Speaking of queer folk in this time of precarious love where death, derangement and denial mark their struggle for human rights, my purpose will be to understand how being a queer refugee is represented and articulated through recent media and cultural texts, including the recent film Moonlight. **Featured Panel Presentation – The Challenges of Doing Cultural Studies Today Professor Donald E. Hall, Professor Baden Offord, Professor Emerita Sue Ballyn and Professor Svetlana Ter-Minasova Given the rise of anti-globalisation, nationalisms and cultural isolationism, 2017 and beyond will prove particularly challenging times for those of us working in cultural studies. Our four panellists will each speak for five minutes about emerging geo-political constraints on their work, as well as their respective national and institutional contexts. This will be followed by a general discussion with the audience about collective experiences and strategies for individual and collective response to the challenges that we face. Featured Presentation – Gastronomy for a Healthy Ageing World Dr Elena Urdaneta, Basque Culinary Center, Spain and Iñigo Cojo, Basque Culinary Center, Spain In this presentation, we analyse the role of gastronomy and nutrition using the healthy ageing approach used in Western countries. Also we propose methods and recommendations to be included into public policies to use gastronomy in an intergenerational way. In this global context, there is a food revolution and cooking could play a role within society and elderly communities. The reasons for dedicating time to cooking and care are explored and studied in depth. Also some reasons and consequences will be addressed. In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017. – The ACSS2017 Organising Committee (iafor.org/ACSS2017-committee) ------------- ***Programme **Featured Panel: Easts Meets West – Healthy, Active and Beautiful Aging in Asia Dr James W. McNally and Professor Hiroshi Ishida How any society deals with aging can be a contentious issue, one on which questions of culture, convenience and even expedience are brought to bear. Economic prosperity and peace in developed countries has lead to unprecedented levels of healthcare provision for a population that, as a result, is living far longer. Coupled with falling birthrates, Western Europe and Japan are witnessing demographic changes that bring unparalleled challenges but also unexpected opportunities for aging populations, as innovations and discoveries help people lead active and healthy lives. This panel will provide an overview of the demographic situation in different countries and cultures in Asia and beyond to compare and contrast outlooks for the aged. It will also examine the concepts of healthy, active and beautiful aging. *A complementary panel will be held on the same theme at the European Conference Series 2017 in Brighton, UK. **Featured Presentation: Methodologies for the Collection of Comparative Community Level Public Health Data: Obtaining Powerful and Statistically Meaningful Findings for Small Populations Dr James W. McNally, University of Michigan, USA Recent health emergencies such as the ebola outbreak in 2015 and the current zika virus reflects the pressing need for the rapid and statistically meaningful collection of data, often within small geographic areas. The collection of public health data at the community level is challenging for a number of reasons. Building respondent trust and gaining local support are key, but even when these barriers are overcome the choice of questions and how they are asked is central to the success of a study and to its impact on health improvements and policy change. One of the common problems found in many community level studies is the lack of comparability and the inability to generalize findings beyond the study area. While interesting and useful information is often obtained, translating this information into a framework that facilitates policy impact often proves difficult due to a lack of comparability. The NACDA Program on Aging has been promoting a methodology for overcoming the challenges of generalizability and comparability that has been successfully employed in several small area studies of public health and healthcare unitization. The presentation will describe this methodology and provide examples of its efficacy in real-world research situations. The presentation will provide supporting materials to guide interested users in applying this approach for their own research specializations. This approach is flexible and works across languages and research disciplines so it can be applied in a variety of public health studies, including RAPID AREA ANALYSIS (RAP) situations. Further programming will be announced in the coming weeks and months. ------------- ***IAFOR's Grants and Scholarships For information about IAFOR's new grants and scholarships for PhD students and early career academics, please visit: iafor.org/acss2017-financial- ------------- ***IAFOR Publishing Opportunities **Peer-reviewed journal: IAFOR Journal of the Social Sciences The IAFOR Journal of the Social Sciences (joss.iafor.org) is an editorially independent journal associated with ACSS2017. Educational institutions at all levels, and of all types, should continue to strive for social change in today's world. Beyond the apparent simplicity of our conference theme, however, there is great scope for wide-ranging responses to the question of just how we go about educating for change, by examining the inherent challenges and responsibilities faced by educators the world over. Education, too frequently, is the victim of politics, and, worse, sometimes ideologies. Politicians and bureaucrats devise and implement policies to effect change that range from curriculum structure and goals to manipulating budgets on behalf of interest groups and their lobbyists. Questions relating to accountability, transparent governance and community relations are too frequently avoided. Within the classroom itself, bridging the gap between policy, theory and practice, whether traditional or virtual, teachers and professors de facto become, at varying levels, agents for change. Beyond providing students with resources for study in given fields, they also support them by often being seen as acting not merely as mentors, but also as role models. These issues are part of the global transformation affecting all human civilisation. How can we as teachers function effectively in a very uncertain environment? How do we help to equip our students with the intellectual and existential tools they require? How do we narrow the gap between theory and practice? How do we make decisions about curriculum and course context in the face of political pressure and social norms? What is the role of interdisciplinary studies in educating for change? And, at the macro level, how can we stimulate awareness of issues such as education assisting the promotion of social justice? This conference, part of IAFOR's global conference series on education, in its broadest sense brings together teachers, researchers and distinguished professors from around the world to share their insights. The goal is to broaden awareness of different contexts in the pursuit of synergies and solutions. We look forward to your active participation in this vital field of future-oriented academic activity of The International Academic Forum. In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017. – The ACE2017 Organising Committee (iafor.org/ACE2017-committee) ------------- ***Past ACE Conferences The ACE2016 conference, held on the theme of "Education and Social Justice: Educating for Equality Within and Across Borders", attracted more than 220 delegates from over 30 countries and offered a diverse variety of papers that encouraged interdisciplinary reflection and discussion. ACE2016 provided the many researchers, academics, scholars and practitioners who attended with an excellent opportunity for intellectual discovery and the development of collaborative links and connections. As part of a Keynote Presentation, ACE2016 Keynote Speaker Professor Insung Jung of International Christian University, Japan, spoke on how MOOCs are being used by individual learners and university systems, and their impact on access, quality and cost in higher education. In a Featured Presentation entitled "Educating for the Future – How Undergraduate Research Can and Does Provide Opportunity for Students to Succeed", Professor Jose McClanahan from Creighton University, USA, addressed how faculty can include students in research, help dissipate some of the commonly held myths about undergraduate students in research, and discover the benefits of this work for faculty and students.
