Modern societies face a number of overarching changes. The consequences of these changes are equally evident at the local as well as global level, influencing the everyday lives of individuals and large societal aggregates. Accordingly, the aim of the 2015 Social Sciences Conference is to contribute to the identification and understanding of different recent social issues, with a focus on social changes that we face in the various segments of the social world. The conference offers a wide range of topics that may be discussed in local and global terms, either through the prism of the social sciences or through interdisciplinary collaborations.

CONFERENCE THEMES:

Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, poster presentations, or colloquia are invited that discuss the broader themes listed below. In addition to the special focus, paper presentations will be grouped into one of the following categories for presentation at the conference:

  • How to Make the Most of a Post Doc or Junior Researcher Position

For many recent PhDs and other doctoral graduates, the first step in an academic career is at least one, if not two or three post doc or junior researcher positions. Regardless of which department you work in, such a position is a great way to make connections, publish your research, add experience to your CV and get a feel for life as an academic. Yet, some recent graduates feel so overwhelmed by the dissertation process that they use a post doc as something akin to academic downtime. While this might be tempting, it is important to remember that the beginning of your career can set the tone for years to come. In today's highly competitive academic market, having multiple publications and presentations on your CV within the first few years of your career can help you immensely in landing a desired position down the road.

Fifth International Conference on Religion and Spirituality in Society

THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY IN SOCIETY

University of California at Berkeley
Berkeley, USA
16-17 April 2015

Dear Delegate,

The International Advisory Board is pleased to announce the Call For Papers for the Fifth International Conference on Religion and Spirituality in Society being held at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, USA from 16-17 April.

SPECIAL CONFERENCE FOCUS:

"Social Movements and Faith"

Religious commitments are, as often as not, social commitments. In addition to its usual range of themes, this year's special focus of the Religion and Society knowledge community is the relation of religion to social movements, ranging from movements for nominally "progressive" or "liberal" social change, to "fundamentalisms" whose religious practices are often explicitly or implicitly social and political. The conference will ask the questions: Under what conditions and to what extent are religious communities social activists, either in their doctrine or their practices? How do religious communities support or align with other social movements?

The 2015 meeting will feature a special focus on this provocative subject. We welcome open debate, discourse, and research from participants that center on this special topic, as well as any other themes or issues relevant to religion and spirituality in society.

CONFERENCE THEMES:

Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, focused discussions or colloquia are invited that address the broader themes listed below. In addition to the special focus, paper presentations will be grouped into one of the following categories for presentation at the conference:

Theme 1: Religious Foundations
Theme 2: Religious Community and Socialization
Theme 3: Religious Commonalities and Differences
Theme 4: The Politics of Religion
Theme 5: Social Movements and Faith

Proposals for in-person presentations should be submitted by 16 FEBRUARY 2015 (title and short abstract). Proposals submitted after this day will be accommodated in non-themed sessions at the conference or are eligible for community membership registrations (no attendance to the conference is required with community membership presentations).
