3 Day Special Focus Event: Testimony and Education

3 Day Special Focus Event: Testimony and Education

Friday 17th October 2014 - Sunday 19th October 2014
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Call for Participation

This 3-day special focus event aims to examine the evolving genres and emerging contexts of testimonial production. Broadly understood, testimony is an autobiographical narrative that presents evidence of first-person accounts of human rights abuses, violence and war, and life under conditions of social oppression. It is a genre that continues to thrive and evolve in the twenty-first century and one that encompasses a diversity of expression or representation from oral to written as well as nonfictional to fictional.

The focus of this meeting will be on developing and exploring themes and ideas surrounding testimony in relation to education, critical pedagogy and civic and community engagement. Within this scope of Testimony and Pedagogy presenters may choose to engage with issues concerning social awareness and the creation of safe spaces for social justice and equity in their communities. We particularly welcome and encourage a variety of participants from both academic and non-academic backgrounds, such as scholars, artists, writers, professionals working in non-profit, social services (i.e. immigration and refugee services), to name a few. Questions to be addressed can include the following: in what ways are testimonies being told and shared? What forms of public participation are being created to facilitate a wider social engagement in education? How is participatory research being used, by whom, and to what end?

Some items that would be of interest for this first meeting in Montreal, Canada could involve the exploration of social justice programs implemented into the Canadian curriculum at elementary and secondary schools (i.e. Me to We Program, mandatory volunteer hours), the (not so) hidden secrets in Canadian history, especially in the cases of the treatment of First Nations peoples (i.e. reservations, residential schools, missing Aboriginal women, etc.), black history and slavery, migrant workers, etc.

We are committed to the view that it is through interdisciplinarity that a just and fair examination can be made of the impact and contributions of testimonial production within the cultures of redress and transnational justice processes for both the producers of testimony and their audience. This call for proposals asks for consideration of testimony in terms of its trajectories into questions dealing with memory, trauma, truth, and/or witness engagement.

Three focus areas in particular are being sought:

Focus 1: Testimony and/as Pedagogy
-Political/Social awareness and activism
-Methodological approaches/uses of testimony
-How to speak, how to tell; how to listen, how to hear

Focus 2: Testimony and Engaging the Public
- Community outreach and collaboration
-The act(s) of bearing witness
-Testimony and public space: art galleries, museums, document centres

Focus 3: Testimony in Action âАУ Blending Theories and Practices
-Production, reception and beyond
-Multi-modalities of testimony

Proposals for panels and alternative forms of presentation are strongly encouraged on the above and related topics.

What to Send:
Proposals will also be considered on any related theme. 300 word proposals should be submitted by Friday 11th July 2014. If a proposal is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper of no more than 3000 words should be submitted by Friday 16th May 2014. Proposals should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: T&E 1 Proposal Submission

Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

Organising Chairs :
Cristina Santos, Adriana Spahr, Tracy Crowe Morey: ssc@inter-disciplinary.net
Rob Fisher: tested1@inter-disciplinary.net

All papers accepted for and presented at the conference must be in English and will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers may be developed for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s). We anticipate establishing a specific publishing series dealing with testimony, along with a possible journal.

Inter-Disciplinary.Net believes it is a mark of personal courtesy and professional respect to your colleagues that all delegates should attend for the full duration of the meeting. If you are unable to make this commitment, please do not submit an abstract for presentation.

21st Century Academic Forum Conference at UC, Berkeley

21st Century Academic Forum Conference at UC, Berkeley
August 21-23 2014
Berkeley, California, United States of America

Conference Dates: August 21-23, 2014

Venue: Clark Kerr Conference Center at the University of California, Berkeley

Types of Presentations:

Keynote Presentations: 45 minutes (invited only)
Research Papers: 20 - 25 minute presentations
Poster Presentations: 90 minutes

Conference Description: The theme of the 21st Century Academic Forum Conference at Berkeley is "Teaching, Learning, and Research in the 21st Century." The organizers encourage submissions that approach this theme from a variety of perspectives under three major topic tracks: (1) teaching and learning in the 21st century and (2) creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship and (3) academic research for the 21st century. The primary aim of the conference is to bring together an international group of researchers and practitioners to encourage and support the development of a new framework for better understanding the dynamic and interconnected nature of education, research, business, and life in the "knowledge economy." Join us on the beautiful Berkeley campus August 21-23, 2014 to learn with and from your fellow conference participants. Those interested in attending as Non-Presenters (Listeners) are most welcome to join in this learning and networking experience as well!

Keynote Speakers: Dr. Brian Nelson (Arizona State University) and Mr. Eli Ghazel (euPAD, Dubai, UAE)

Paper/Poster Topic Tracks: Consistent with the 3 Missions of the 21st Century Academic Forum, we are calling for the submission of paper and poster proposals related to but not limited to the 3 topic tracks: Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century, Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, and Academic Research for the 21st Century.

Abstract Submission: Abstracts are peer-reviewed by our Conference Committee. Authors are invited to submit their abstracts in English through our Online Submission System until the final deadline of July 11, 2014. The Conference Committee review abstract proposals on a rolling basis and authors will typically receive a decision within two weeks of his/her submission.

Paper Publication Opportunities: All papers that meet the 21st Century Academic Forum's Conference Proceedings requirements will be published in our online Conference Proceedings (ISSN: 2330-1236). Papers must be submitted for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings by November 24, 2014. We purposely set the deadline for papers three months following the conference with the rationale that authors should use the feedback they receive at the conference in crafting their final drafts of their paper.

The Conference Proceedings will be published on February 23, 2015. The Conference Proceedings editorial board in turn works with the editors of our three peer-reviewed journals to select papers for possible publication in one of our three online peer-reviewed journals listed below.

The International Journal of 21st Century Education (ISSN: 2330-1244)
The International Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ISSN: 2333-9659)
Journal of Language Learning and Teaching for the 21st Century (ISSN: 2333-9640)

The editors of these journals will contact selected authors and begin the editing process and ultimately publish quarterly issues of each journal based on a thematic basis. The 21st Century Academic Forum is fully committed to Open Access information, making your research papers available to a global audience.

Join us on the beautiful UC Berkeley conference in August and connect with like-minded teachers and researchers, to learn about current trends, and to grow as a member of a global community of people committed to preparing citizens for the demands of the 21st century.

Inaugural Global Symposium: Tranquility and Well-Being

Inaugural Global Symposium: Tranquility and Well-Being

Sunday 19th October - Tuesday 21st October 2014
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Tranquillity and Well-Being is an inaugural symposium marking the launch of Tranquillity Studies â€" a pioneering inter- and trans-disciplinary research and publishing network that explores tranquillity as a multi-layered experience and provides a forum to explore philosophies, conceptual frames, research and practices associated with Tranquillity and its influences and effects on human beings in isolation and within natural and urban environments.

"Life is lived one breath, one smile, one heartbeat at a time"

We live in a very stressful society. We all must deal with situational stress, created by specific incidents in our home or work life. In addition trying to balance the demands of our work and our personal life often contribute to a fear of not being good enough: at our job, as a parent or partner, or even as a person â€" all of which may contribute to insipient stress, which is a silent killer.

If we do not take steps to find balance and achieve moments of tranquillity within our lives then the chances are we will succumb to depressions, chronic fatigue, life changing events or life threatening disease.

Each of us experiences different levels and types of stressful moments within our lives. These moments and our resilience to particular situations can be affected by finding moments of tranquillity to counterbalance the stress and return us to our equilibrium.

"Find balance in all things"

There are many approaches and practices that may be employed to help find tranquillity in the midst of chaos. This symposium will be of interest to academics, artists, healthcare professional, clergy and other individuals seeking to explore tranquillity and well being.

Submissions are sought for the following key areas of focus:

Spiritualities, Tranquillities and Well Being
- Meditations and Prayer (Christian, Buddhist, Taoist etc)
- Walking the Labyrinth
- Eastern and Western Spiritual Practice
- Life-styles, quality of life, standards of living
- Happiness and enjoyment

Body, Tranquillity and Well Being
- Stress, depression, anxiety, angst
- Artistic explorations and bodies â€" dance, song, theatre, sex
- Holistic Approaches to human Body
- Clothes, Costume and Fashion
- Spa Experiences

The Practices of Tranquillity and Well Being
- Contexts of health, illness, disease and well being
- Complimentary and Alternative Medicine
- Yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi and other Eastern body based approaches
- Alexander, Pilates, Feldenkrais and other Western approaches

Environments, Tranquillity and Well Being
- Therapeutic Gardens
- Feng Shui
- Architectural design
- Urban Planning, Rural Spaces
- Technology, Tranquillity and Well Being

Research, Tranquillity and Well Being
- Understanding 'tranquillity'; maps, models and methodologies
- Models of research: engaging with tranquillity
- Results, outcomes and consequences
- Tranquillity and the future

Proposals for participation may focus on these or any related areas. We are particularly keen to encourage submissions that are not subsumed within disciplines, but cut across and between disciplinary vocabularies to provide new synergies, domains and inter-disciplinary possibilities. We warmly welcome proposals which go beyond traditional paper presentations and encompass also panels, performances, interactive workshops and practitioner sessions.

All papers accepted for and presented at the conference must be in English and will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers may be developed for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s). We anticipate establishing a specific publishing series dealing with tranquillity, along with a possible journal.

A limited number of non-presenting delegates are welcome. Full participation in the interactive sessions along with active engagement with the symposium themes and dialogues is both encouraged and expected. Instead of submitting a presentation, please send the organising chairs a brief outline of your interest in the symposium and an overview of your experience in the themes to be covered in the symposium.

What to Send:
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 11th July 2014. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 19th September 2014. Abstracts should be submitted to the Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats, following this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: TWB Proposal Submission.

Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.
