ECSS 2014 - The European Conference on the Social Sciences

ECSS 2014 - The European Conference on the Social Sciences
3rd to 6th July 2014
Brighton, United Kingdom

2014 Conference Theme: "Individual, Community and Society: Conflict, Resolution and Synergy"

Enquiries: ecss@iafor.org
Web address: http://ecss.iafor.org
Sponsored by: IAFOR - The International Academic Forum

The International Academic Forum in conjunction with its global university partners is proud to announce the Second European Conference on the Social Sciences, to be held from July 3-6, 2014, at the Thistle Hotel Brighton, in the United Kingdom.

Hear the latest research, publish before a global audience, present in a supportive environment, network, engage in new relationships, experience the UK, explore Brighton, London and the South-East of England, join a global academic community...

Building on the success of last year's event, the Second European Conference on the Social Sciences will build on the conversations and partnerships that have developed since last year, as we again encourage academics and scholars to meet and exchange ideas and views in an international academic forum.

This year's conference will include a variety of presenters representing a wide range of social science disciplines, expressing divergent views, searching for common ground, and creating the synergies that can inspire multi-disciplinary collaborations. In developing these relationships among ourselves, the role of the social sciences is strengthened as we take our place at the table, along with scholars in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), in seeking solutions to the complex issues and problems of the 21st century. I sincerely hope that we will use this time together, not just for intellectual discovery and discourse, but to establish a common vision and to motivate each other to do our part in the creation of a sustainable world.

2014 Conference Theme: "Individual, Community and Society: Conflict, Resolution and Synergy"

Conflict is an integral part of the human condition. The universal struggle between our personal selves - who we are as unique, separate and different from others, with our specific blend of experiences, abilities, attitudes, aspirations, needs and wants â and our social selves, intricately connected to, and interdependent on, others â our loved ones, our friends and favoured groups, our communities and cultures â leads inevitably to internal as well as interpersonal conflict.

Conflict among our communities and societies is also natural, given that these groups are founded on commonality â of geography, values, attitudes, beliefs, aspirations â and differentiated from others based on these. Diversity, however, though it may lead to conflict, plays an important role in the flourishing of communities and societies. One of the challenges of modern society is harnessing the synergy that emerges from the interaction of these differences.

We look forward to seeing you at ECSS2014!

MSc in Energy Policy for Sustainability @ University of Sussex

Dear colleagues,

I would be very grateful if you could forward the information below to people potentially interested in doing a MSc in Energy Policy.

Nothing works without energy, but our current energy systems face mounting economic, social and environmental pressures and must change radically and quickly if the world is to avoid dangerous climate change. Creating sustainable energy systems will be a defining challenge for humanity in the 21st century and one that requires professionals who fully appreciate the technological, economic and political dimensions of sustainable energy.

Our MSc aspires to educate a new generation who will play leadership roles in these challenges as well as train future energy policy professionals working in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. This MSc builds on a world-leading research base at SPRU – Science and Technology Policy Research, including the exciting and forward-looking work of the Sussex Energy Group (SEG). The MSc is unique in combining ideas from economics, innovation studies and policy studies while requiring no prior training in these fields.

For more information (incl. about scholarships), please see: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/spru/study/2014/taught/30285#course

Best wishes,
Florian

World Water Day Media Workshop @ UN-Water

World Water Day Media Workshop

UN-Water is calling for applications from environmental journalists for a Media Workshop which will take place during World Water Day in *Tokyo, Japan*. Up to 20 selected journalists will be sponsored to participate in a workshop which will include training and editorial sessions, meetings/interviews with experts and participation in the official UN celebration of World Water Day 2014.

*Rationale*
World Water Day, which is celebrated annually on 22 March, is this year dedicated to the theme ‘Water and Energy.’ Water demand could exceed 44% of the available annual resources by 2050 while energy demand could experience a 50% increase by the same date. As a
consequence, the World faces a genuine challenge, without energy there is no water and without water, there is no energy. Water and Energy inter-linkages have an important role in the post-2015 development agenda and the conceptualization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are indeed some main challenges, interconnections and opportunities for realizing synergies and benefits from joint responses on the water and energy nexus, including the design of climate resilience and green
economies.

*Objectives*
·         Improve media training and understanding of water and energy issues
·         Increase media coverage of the interlinkages, challenges and opportunities of water and energy
·         Increase media coverage of World Water Day and related issues
·         Build a community of journalists interacting and writing regularly about water and energy issues

*Eligibility and selection criteria*
Application is now open to journalists from developing countries.
To be considered for participation in the workshop, prospective candidates are asked to submit:
·         Curriculum vitae
·         Examples of work (examples in  languages other than English should be accompanied by a short summary in English):
o    2 examples of News (written, audio or video)
o    1 example of in-depth analysis (reportage)
·         A letter from the supervising editor indicating why the journalist should be selected and committing to publish the journalist’s
articles written as a result of the workshop
·         A one-page motivation letter where the journalist explains its interest in taking part in the workshop and outlines previous reporting on
the topic (water, energy, water and energy, environmental issues)

*Workshop overview and program*
Selected journalists will participate in a workshop, which will include training and editorial sessions, meetings/interviews with experts and
participating in the official UN celebration of World Water Day 2014. Two weeks after the workshop, the journalists will submit the articles,
programmes and reportages they have prepared and, if agreed, they will also be featured on the World Water Day and the ‘Water for Life’ Decade websites.

*Sponsorship*
The workshop is open to journalists from all over the world. Up to 20 journalists from developing countries across Asia (North-East, West,
South-East and Central Asia) will be sponsored by UN-Water. This means the cost of travel and accommodation for these selected journalists will be covered. The participants will be provided invitation letters as required for obtaining a visa. However, they are expected to make all the necessary arrangements for travel, including visas, health certificates and travel insurance prior to travel. Authorization from the organizers will be necessary before they make travel arrangements.

*Time and venue*
The World Water Day media workshop is planned for 20-21 March and will be held in Tokyo, Japan.

The "Climate Change Management Series", published with Springer:  http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/?series_id=618899 is a leading book series on climate change management. Since its launching in 2009, the series has published some ground-breaking books such as "Universities and Climate Change", "The Economic, Social and Political Aspects of Climate Change", "Climate Change and the Sustainable Use of Water Resources" and others.  The Editor-in-Chief  is is now calling for papers for a new volume, to be launched in late 2014, titled "Managing Climate Change in the Asia-Pacific Region".

Due to its geo-political structure, the Asia-Pacific region is one of the most vulnerable areas to the impacts of climate change. Yet, there
is a paucity of scientific publications which look at the particularities and complexities of cllimate change adaptation in the region in an  interactive manner, and which highlight the diffferentiated impacts of  climate change across countries. The book will address this need, and will bridge the knowledge gap seen in this field, with a special focus on aspects of climate change management. The publication will document and promote scholarly research, practical projects, field work and other climate change adaptation initiatives, from scientists based -or working- in the Asia-Pacific region.

Expressions of interest, initially consisting  of a 200 words abstract with the full contact details of the authors, should be sent by the
15th February 2014 to: beids@beids.de. Full papers are due by the 30th April 2014

Further details will be discussed with the authors whose abstracts have been accepted. The editor would be happy to discuss submissions
in advance.
