COURSE ON RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research is an art of systematic investigation, involving inductive and deductive methods. One can also define research as a scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic for the advancement of knowledge. Creswell states that "Research is a process of steps used to collect and analyze information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue". It consists of a search for knowledge through objective and systematic methods of finding solution to a problem. Therefore, research methodology is a way to systematically explain the research problem. Hence, it is crucial for the researcher to know not only the research methods but also the methodology; the process itself.


Rationale: 

The course intends to offer the practical guidelines for research on social issues and direct the participants through all the stages of research, that is, from identifying a viable, the research problem, the design, to the submission of a report or research article. This programme is meant to acquaint aspiring researchers with basic tools of conducting action oriented social science research.

 

Coverage:

 

Broadly, the course intends to deal with variety of analytical methods used in social research and allied studies, with particular emphasis on the implementation of these methods.

 

Topics to be covered would include: introduction to research methodology and methods in social research; methods and tools for defining and collecting data; designing questionnaire and testing the reliability of questionnaire; organizing, visualizing and summarizing data; process to generate samples; analytical techniques; mechanics of writing a research report and research paper. Hands-on training sessions using statistical software packages will also be imparted.

 

The participants will be introduced to wide range of conceptual issues, and quantitative and qualitative methods of conducting social science research. New approaches in research like ethnography will also be dealt with. In order to make the course more practical, experience-based learning will be emphasized as course methodology.

 

It also emphasizes on the variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods used in social research and allied studies, with particular emphasis on the implementation of these methods using software packages. The methods will be illustrated by examples from the field experience and related studies.

 

Objectives:

 

The ten days long Training Course on Research Methodology is aimed to help the social scientists and researchers to opt an appropriate methodology for their research work and plan the work in proper step by step manner.

 

    To help participants acquire intensive knowledge and understanding on the various aspects of research methodology in social sciences.

 

    To identify viable problem and develop capacity for conceptualizing and writing research proposals.

 

    To equip the participants with research methods and tools of data collection.

 

    Develop understanding of the basic concepts of quantitative and qualitative data analyses, interpret and evaluate results of data.

 

 

 

Course Design:

 

The course is designed to have interactive classroom sessions, lectures and demonstrations by the field experts, exercises and assignments, preparation of questionnaires, field visits/pilot survey, report writing and presentation of research findings in small groups.

 

Expected Outcome:

 

At the end of the programme the pparticipants will be capacitated to have enhanced skills to carry out research scientifically, to express their findings and conclusions. Also participants will be equipped with knowledge of various types of research, tools and techniques

 

With this perspective a 10-days Course on Research Methodology will be organized from

25th February, 2016 to 5th March, 2016  (both days inclusive) at Indian Social Institute, New Delhi.

 

The medium of the course is English and the course is open to PhD Scholars and faculty members of social science disciplines in research institutions, colleges and university postgraduate departments as well as the researchers from NGO sector.

 

Kindly note that the course is expected to accommodate 35 local and outstation participants.
