Founded in 2005, IDEA is the Turkish national association for English studies. As a member of ESSE (The European Society for the Study of English) IDEA aims at bringing together academics working in the fields of linguistics, literature, language teaching and cultural studies . This year we will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of IDEA conferences at Bogazici University, Istanbul, the host venue of the very 1st conference.

The keynote speakers are:

Jeanette Winterson (Pending Confirmation)

Born in Manchester, UK in 1959 and adopted into a firmly religious family, Jeanette Winterson studied at Oxford University. Her first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, was published in 1985 to tremendous acclaim, and she later adapted it for television. Since then she has written numerous novels, including Sexing the Cherry, The Passion, and Written on the Body. She has won several prizes including the Whitbread Prize, and the Prix d'argent at the Cannes Film Festival.

Professor Simon During

Simon During is a New Zealander who studied for his PhD in Victorian literature at Cambridge. For many years he taught at the University of Melbourne, where, as Robert Wallace Chair and Head of Department, he helped establish the Media and Communications, Cultural Studies and Publishing programs. Between 2002 and 2010 was a Professor of English at Johns Hopkins University, where he also served as Director of the Film and Media Programme. He has held fellowships and visiting positions at Berkeley and Princeton and elsewhere.

Professor Gerard Steen

Gerard Steen has been professor of Language and Communication at VU University Amsterdam (VU) since 2013, and before that held the VU chair in Language Use and Cognition. He has led an NWO Vici programme on metaphor in discourse (2005-2010) and an Open Competition programme on visual metaphor (2009-2014). Steen is also chair of the Board of the Netherlands National Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT).

CALL FOR PAPERS

Our conference accepts papers in a wide range of topics from many different fields of "Studies in English". Some of the major fields are:

Literature, Cultural and Critical Studies, Linguistics, Language Teaching and Translation Studies

Please submit an abstract (maximum 250 words) to:

idea10@boun.edu.tr

Only email submissions are going to be accepted.

Please include your name, affiliation, abstract title, email address, a brief biography and 5-6 keywords pertaining to your topic.

We would also appreciate if you could write the name of the field of study in the title section of your email.

After sending your abstract you should receive a confirmation email within 3 workdays. If you have not received a confirmation after 3 workdays, please contact us.

All the abstracts will be peer reviewed.
