New academic opportunities from the UNCTAD Virtual Institute network @ 6th May 2014

I am pleased to forward the following academic offers proposed by the Virtual Institute extended network. I hope you find them of interest.

The International Network of Customs Universities (INCU), invites Vi members to participate in its inaugural conference, "Trade Facilitation Post-Bali: Putting Policy into Practice," scheduled May 21-23 in Baku.

Sub-themes of the conference include: the WTO Bali Package and its impact on customs; customs-business partnerships and trusted trader schemes; customs-academia partnerships in research and educational programmes; trade facilitation in emergency/disaster relief situations; and infrastructure and regional aspects of trade facilitation. Azerbaijan Customs will cover accommodation and conference fees for selected participants. 

Registration for the conference has been extended from the original deadline of May 1, and will remain open subject to available space.


ARTNeT, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLASCO), the Council for Development of Social Sciences in Africa (CODESRIA) and the International Association for Development Economics (IDEAs), have issued a call for applications for the South-South Scholarship Awards 2014 on the theme "Work and Welfare in the South." The call is aimed at social scientists from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.

Nine scholarships will be awarded in total, three for each region. Each scholarship includes a monetary award of USD 10,000, as well as air tansport and accommodation to participate in an international seminar.

Applicants must be experienced researchers who have a master´s or doctoral degree. It is a required condition to reside in any country in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa or Asia and to have the endorsement of CLASCO, CODESRIA or IDEAs, according to the region concerned.
Applicants must speak English so they can present the results of research in an international academic seminar.

Applications must be submitted to grants@networkideas.org (Asia); research.grants@codesria.sn (Africa) or becassur14@clacso.edu.ar (Latin American and the Caribbean) no later than June 1.


Oportunidades de la red LATN

  • LATN, la Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, the United Nations University, GIGA, Universidad de Barcelona y BID ofrecen beca para participar en la III Escuela Doctoral sobre Regionalismo Latinoamericano, Europeo y Comparado destinada a generar un espacio de debate y reflexión para estudiantes doctorales e investigadores en disciplinas de las Ciencias Sociales y áreas vinculadas al estudio del regionalismo. El evento se llevará a cabo del 14 al 18 de julio en Quito, Ecuador.

La beca cubre los gastos de matrícula del curso y traslado aéreo a Quito desde algún país de América Latina (gastos de estadía serán la resposabilidad del becado).  Se considerarán especialmente aquellas propuestas de investigadores con al menos de tres años de experiencia en el tema y estudiantes doctorales provenientes de países de América Latina.

Para postular, candidatos deberán enviar una carta de motivación, un CV detallado y un resumen de su proyecto de investigación (en español o inglés) hasta el 12 de mayo a latn@latn.org.ar.

Cada estudio de caso cuenta con un financiamiento de hasta USD 10.000. Los autores deberán presentar un breve presupuesto que no exceda esa cantidad máxima de financiamiento, justificando los ítems que se incluyen. Las propuestas seleccionadas recibirán oportunamente términos de referencia detallados comunes que permitan la comparación de estos estudios de caso.

La propuesta deberá ser enviada a redlatn@redlatn.org.ar en un documento de Word, con un nombre que contenga el apellido del autor/es y el caso propuesto. La fecha límite para la entrega de propuestas es el 12 de mayo. El documento tendrá como máximo 2.000 palabras en letra Times New Roman, tamaño 12, con espacio doble.
