4th Global Conference: Experiencing Prison
4th Global Conference Experiencing Prison Sunday 12th May - Tuesday 14th May 2013 Prague, Czech Republic Call for Presentations: This inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary conference marks the continuation of a project dedicated to the study of the experience of imprisonment. Imprisonment has become the dominant form of punishment in most societies across the world. It may occur prior to trial, or as a result of sentencing by a properly constituted court. Imprisonment without trial or due process occurs in various forms in most societies across the world, mostly sanctioned by the state itself, sometimes used as a political strategy by military, ideological, political or religious groups within a state, or by groups desirous of becoming a state. We welcome contributions about the experience of incarceration across the entire range of perspectives, including legal, criminological, historical, fictional, phenomenological, biographical and autobiographical. Contributions are welcomed from former prisoners, detainees, incarcerated asylum seekers, former prisoners of war, political prisoners or those detained because of nationalist, religious or other convictions. All genres and media will be considered, in order to examine the widest possible range of representations, past and contemporary, which communicate the experience and nature of imprisonment. Contributions will be welcome from those who are involved with the delivery of incarceration, as well as those who seek to ameliorate incarceration by providing therapeutic drama, literacy, education, counselling, religious support and other services. Presentations will also be considered on any related theme. What to send: 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 4 30th November 2012. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 15th February 2013. 300 word abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats with the following information and in this order: a) author(s), b) affiliation, c) email address, d) title of abstract, e) body of abstract, f) up to 10 keywords. E-mails should be entitled: Prison 4 Abstract Submission. Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend. Organising Chairs Diana Medlicott: diana@inter-disciplinary.net Rob Fisher: ep4@inter-disciplinary.net The conference is part of the Probing the Boundaries programme of research projects. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and exciting. All papers accepted for and presented at the conference will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers may be developed for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s). For further details of the conference, please visit: http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/probing-the-boundaries/persons/experiencing-prison/call-for-papers/ Please note: Inter-Disciplinary.Net is a not-for-profit network and we are not in a position to be able to assist with conference travel or subsistence. |

11th Global Conference: Violence
11th Global Conference Violence Thursday 9th May - Saturday 11th May 2013 Prague, Czech Republic Call for Presentations: This conference is one of a continuing series that aims to bring together people from a wide range of disciplines to focus on Violence. Our intention is to contribute to the body of thought which seeks to understand the nature and causes of this endemic feature of society. Such a complex phenomenon has many faces, a multitude of contexts (real or imagined), and many possible explanations in relation to causation and to the role Violence has played and still plays in societies all over the world and at every stage of development. Perpetrators may be states, political or religious factions within states, military groups, state or private institutions, communities, gangs, families or individuals. The range of possible victims is equally diverse and possible explanations range across historical, cultural, political, ethical, literary, functional, psychological, criminological, sociological, biological and economic sources. We therefore invite contributions from any and all of these disciplinary areas. Our inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approach seeks to do justice to the richness of this theme at a conference where fruitful dialogue between and across disciplines is highly valued. The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. What to send: 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 30th November 2012. E-mails should be entitled: Violence 11 Abstract Submission. Joint Organising Chairs: Diana Medlicott: diana@inter-disciplinary.net Rob Fisher: v11@inter-disciplinary.net The conference is part of the Probing the Boundaries programme of research projects. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and exciting. All papers accepted for and presented at the conference will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers may be developed for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s). *BACKGROUND*
Adopt a Negotiator (AaN) is a project of the Global Campaign for Climate Action, an alliance of more than 350 non-profit organizations working to ensure a safe climate future for people and nature, to promote the low-carbon transition of our economies, and to accelerate the adaptation efforts in communities already affected by climate change by mobilizing civil society and galvanizing public. AaN got its start with a group of passionate young climate activists publicly tracking their country s climate negotiators during the lead-up to the Copenhagen Climate Talks
(COP15) in 2009. The project has since continued to support activists in publicly tracking their government s roles in international efforts to respond to climate change.
------------------------------
*THE OPPORTUNITY
The Adopt a Negotiator project is awarding fellowships to exceptional young people that we think possess the ability to effectively push their country toward unlocking climate solutions nationally and internationally. Our Fellows will have an opportunity to help shape their government s role in solving climate change. They will be part of a team of passionate, dedicated and talented activists from around the world; participating in a moment that will shape if and how the world responds. Their efforts will build on a proud legacy of past Negotiator Trackers , and contribute to the climate movement in a creative, challenging and exciting role.
Applicants must be 18 to 30 years of age; be able to attend the Doha Climate Change Conference from November 23rd to December 9th; and able to actively contribute to the Adopt a Negotiator project as an activist and blogger from August to December of this year.
Here are some of the qualities we are looking for:
*You understand the landscape -* Our Fellows should not only understand climate change, they are also familiar with their country s national and international climate politics; preferably with the UNFCCC itself: its history, its inner workings, and its roles in addressing climate change.
*You are a great communicator -* Our Fellows are excellent at turning the complex and hard to communicate developments happening during climate negotiations into compelling, accessible, creative, actionable communications across multiple channels and mediums. Our primary tool is blogging and you must be a skilled blogger but the ability to leverage other communications tools and channels with strategic and/or large audiences via new and traditional media is key to their success.
*You've got informed empathy -* Our Fellows seek out a deep understanding of how climate change affects people in different situations in different ways all over the world security, health, livelihood, values, politics, business, etc and can tap into that understanding to help them connect with various audiences (including your negotiators).
*You're brave -* In a short amount of time, each Fellow has to build relationships with experts in our alliance, members of the media, and their country s negotiators and decision makers. Fellows must make and take public stands on complicated issues; get their ideas and opinions out to media in their home country in meaningful ways; and share those
*You're fast -* Our Fellows must be able to rapidly respond to events and opportunities inside climate negotiations and out.
*You're dedicated -* Our Fellows understand the stakes and are dedicated to helping push for progress in addressing climate change in spite of any setbacks and challenges we face along the way. While we expect to count on our Fellows full-time participation during the Doha Climate Change Conference, they will also actively participate in the project throughout the remaining months of 2012.
While this Fellowship is a volunteer opportunity, support for participation in the Doha Climate Change Conference will be provided by the Global Campaign for Climate Action.
------------------------------
*ROLE DESCRIPTION
