African Development Finance Workshop

The Institute of Global Finance and Development (IGFD) at the Lancashire
Business School of the University of Central Lancashire, in collaboration
with the University of Stellenbosch Business School and Economic Research
Southern Africa (ERSA), Cape Town, South Africa, is organising a two-day
workshop to provide a platform for deliberation on what matters for
Development Finance in Africa. The workshop is a result of an on-going
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) project on Microfoundations of
Access to Finance: Demand-side Perspectives in South Africa at the
University of Central Lancashire, UK.

African Development Finance Policy Workshop
7 - 8 August 2012
The Institute of Global Finance and Development at The Lancashire
Business School of the University of Central Lancashire in
collaboration with the University Of Stellenbosch Business School and
the Economic Research Southern Africa, Cape Town, South Africa is
organizing a two-day Workshop to provide a platform for deliberation
on what matters for the Development Finance in Africa.
Background
Well-functioning financial systems are crucial for ensuring
sustainable growth and development. It is also generally accepted that
well-founded financial structures can have beneficial effects on more
equitable distribution of wealth and poverty alleviation. And yet
large portion of the population on the developing world are
effectively excluded from the formal financial system. It is therefore
important to properly assess and understand the mechanisms and
processes that could improve financial inclusion. Due to the high
connectedness between financial and social exclusion, extending access
to finance should be expected to also bring about wider societal
benefits. Thus, an all-inclusive financial system enhances efficiency
and welfare by establishing a 'functional' equilibrium between the
financial and real sectors of an economy. In a wider context,
financial inclusion contributes to economic growth through value
creation of small entrepreneurship and businesses, positive
spillovers, improvements in human development indicators (health,
nutrition, and education), reduction in inequality and poverty.
Papers addressing both the micro and macro causes and effects of the
finance-development nexus are welcome. In particular we are interested
in papers dealing with the issue of access to finance and its role in
development, but papers discussing other such as e.g. political or
social constraints on development will also be considered.
The conference will give excellent opportunities to exchange
experiences and promote networking. We welcome papers, articles and
case studies on topics related to the core issue of financial sector
development in Africa and invite all interested academics, researchers
and policy-makers to attend the workshop.
The conference organizers request the participants to send either an
expression of interest to attend or an abstract of 500 words relating
to the central theme. In the case of the latter both theoretical and
empirical papers are welcome.

Seminar

From Survival to Development:
Understanding Himalayan Traditional Knowledge Systems in
Socio-Historical Perspective

(A Two Days National Seminar, 22-23 March, 2012)

About the Seminar
In the past couple of years, with the failure of the grand theories of
development, there appears significant change in social sciences
research to think about the theories that are site-and time-specific.
This paradigm shift has also gained the momentum in exploring the
interrelationship of agency of the subaltern actors and the
Traditional Knowledge systems in present day context.
With the changing scenario of development, it has now become essential
to understand not just how the poor and the marginalized were / are
subjected to development, but also the manner in which they are to
withstand and re-appropriate external interventions creatively.
The Himalayan Context
As we know India with its multicultural diversity, is the repository
of Traditional Knowledge (TK) Systems. Through centuries, communities
living in different ecological zones in our country in general and
Himalaya in particular have developed their own treasure of knowledge
interacting with nature and other cultures.
If we look at the existing practices of TKS in the Himalayan region,
they are not only rich, but varied in forms. Be it practices of
environmental protection, management and conservation of natural
resources, animal husbandry and veterinary practices, agriculture,
horticulture, forestry, architecture and housing, health science and
practices, metallurgy, craft, textiles, performing arts, fine arts
etc. In spite of its wide spread prevalence and utility, not enough
attention has been paid to TKS from an academic research or
development policy perspective. The policies adopted in the Himalayan
region in the name of modernisation in colonial and in post colonial
India demonstrate that such practices which form significant part of
cultural life of the Himalayan people were either ignored or
sidelined.
The growing concern for sustainability has now made people realise
that TKS has vital role to play in sustainable development of the
region. Even in academic discourse it is vaguely discussed. Many
attributes of TKSs are still not considered. The seminar proposes to
focus on all such vital issues that are of relevance and importance to
understand and bring to light the treasure of Himalayan Traditional
Knowledge Systems.

Objectives of the Seminar
• to evolve a theoretical framework to situate TKS in
socio-scientific perspective.
• to understand the historical forces that played role to negate
people's knowledge in these far flung areas and thus add new
knowledge for the construction of cultural economic history and
history of science in the Himalayan region.
• to identify the important TKSs for the documentation and
archiving of these rapidly diminishing knowledge base of the
Himalayan communities.
• to prepare action plan with the help of experts for documentation
and conservation of these systems. The seminar will also make efforts
to suggest ways to integrate culture as a prerequisite and basis for
development project design and mutually agreed strategy for
sustainable development.
Sub-Themes:
• Theorising TKSs: The debate on scientific vs non scientific
• History and TKS
• TKS in the Himalayan region
• TKS and Development: The Himalayan perspective
• The road map for TKS studies and conservation
• We have broadly outlined the sessions on below mentioned themes.

CAN WE SURVIVE CAREER? CAN WE SURVIVE WORK?
CAN WE SURVIVE CIVILIZATION? by anhilaal*:
Lecture and Workshop Tour in February 2012
Main Speakers and participants: John Zerzan, Faridabad Majdoor
Samachar, Vilas Sukhdeve, Rabbi Shergill and
Gangadin Lohar
1. Can We Survive Career? In 1950s, children were heroes if they
secured 50% of marks in the final high school and secondary exams. In
1980s
children were heroes if they secured 80% in the final high school and
secondary exams. In 2000s securing 100% has no meaning at all and
children are in a state of hopelessness. Number of children committing
suicide in India is growing at a rate of 30% every year. If not
increasing
knowledge load and increasing time poverty: what else explains this
collective madness? If not the fear of fall in the social hierarchy
and fear of
remaining unemployed: what else explains the driving force behind the
economy? What else than the accumulated pressure over decades and
centuries to outcompete Others in the job market has turned the
generation of parents and teachers into natural enemies of the younger
generation?
2. Can We Survive Work? In 1950s, one male member with 8-10 hours of a
day job was somehow able to provide for a family of 4 to 5 children
and extended family members. In 2012, both spouse work 12+12 = 22 to
24 hours each day. (Not-so-) old-age parents, if possible, work 3 to 4
hours x 2 = 4 to 8 hours everyday. In total, our shrunken domestic
unit spends 28 to 34 hours working. We slog three to four times more
at the
workplace today. Still, ruling ideology and consensus is never tired
of telling us how much more hard working and motivated we should be!
Welcome to new hierarchy from old hierarchy! What else but our being
worker or wage-worker explains our misery? The more we work, more it
turns against us and robs us of our humanness in our relationships in
our family, community, society and with ourselves. Real-time thief is
the
workplace or our friends, relatives and community members?
3. Can We Survive Civilization? What the elites called Civilization
was always work for us. Without any exception; what else were
Civilizations
for the nature and for the majority of population other than death
machines out of control and labour camps? If we want to become normal
with
ourselves, with other members of our species and share the planet with
other living beings together: the abolition of our existence as
workers
and wage-workers is its precondition. This is one of most central
questions that should be raised and discussed together. We want to
have
relationship with nature, human beings and other living beings at the
centre of our life. Not career and work.
4. Searching the way out, together! At the end of our workshops and
talks in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram, we would
like to share ideas, experiences and our attempts from the history and
contemporary societies to escape Work, Career and Civilization. We
would
like to establish a non-hierarchical coordinating centre to pool our
resources at south Asian level, as a part of similar attempts
everywhere else,
together. Everybody is welcome.

PSPC 2012- 5th Annual Conference on Poverty, Sustainable Development and Social Policy

PSPC2012 - 5th Annual Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Conference
(Poverty, Rural Development and Social Policy)
8-10 March 2012
Bangkok, Thailand
Abstract submission deadline: 1st February 2012 or until space is available
Website:
http://www.tomorrowpeople.org/poverty-social-protection-conference.html
Apply now: http://www.tomorrowpeople.org/pspc-application-form.html

Dear Scholars, Students, NGO and governmental representatives:

We are happy to announce PSPC2012- a great opportunity to gain exposure to
other cultures while expanding your social network and adding valuable
interest to your resume.

The 5th Annual Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Conference (Poverty,
Rural Development and Social Policy) will take place from 8-10 March 2012 in
the beautiful city of Bangkok, Thailand.

This three-day program is unlike most academic conferences, and will focus
on issues of poverty and its eradication, rural development, social policies,
social inequality, race relations and policy management and mismanagement with
an international perspective. As poverty continues to be an ongoing, often-
inhumane problem, this conference aims to provide a comparative perspective in
analyzing past/current trends and conditions to better understand the never-
ending downward spiral many individuals and families find themselves in.

The 5th Annual Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Conference (Poverty,
Rural Development and Social Policy) will address questions regarding the role
and importance of equal distribution of resources and social inclusion, the
potential roles and impacts less-developed countries have on politics,
business, education and the public sector and major social and economic trends
and their potential for poverty reduction.

PSPC2012 will welcome scholars, NGO representatives, corporate and
Governmental representatives gathered with a common goal- that of poverty
reduction and to increase social responsibility. Fostering partnerships and
international cooperation are integral steps towards notable change.

Integral part of the conference is visit to Duang Prateep Foundation and the
biggest slums in Bangkok- Klong Toey. This is an area of Bangkok that most
tourists will never visit. It is the slums where the poorest people live. Here
you will meet real Thai people, people who are dealing with the harshest
aspects of life in Bangkok. They are friendly with nothing to offer but a
sincere smile. They are happy to see visitors, it shows people care. A visit
to Klong Toey will leave you questioning what you thought you knew about
Thailand, and perhaps even about yourself and what you thought you valued.

NOTE: Most of Thailand provinces and inner Bangkok, including the area
conference hotel is located in, were NOT affected by recent flooding that
occurred in some provinces in Northern and central Thailand. Moreover, as
waters recede in affected areas, big clean ups have been organized by Thai
government and situation is now back to normal. There should be no reason for
safety concerns for international travelers, who are already coming back to
Thailand in a big number.
