International Water Convention
Water Security and Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities
3-4 November 2010, Venue: India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with the Ministry of Water Resources, is organizing the first "India Water Forum" (IWF) an annual world water convention to address the dynamics of water security and climate change. In its inception year, the IWF theme is: 'Water Security and Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities'. The theme of IWF 2010 has great significance in today's world as climate change, being a global phenomenon, calls for collective action and knowledge sharing across countries. Climate change impacts on groundwater, ocean, rivers and glaciers are being felt by fragile ecosystems and vulnerable societies. Enhancing the adaptive capacity of countries for coping with the impacts, risks and uncertainties of a changing climate and climate extremes is the most important challenge for our planet and its inhabitants. In this context, the forum envisages a series of interactive sessions which will bring together policy makers, industrial experts, environmentalists, researchers, academicians, students and the general public on a common platform. This international convention will showcase advanced knowledge and successful technologies developed in different countries and regions, with the aim of promoting international knowledge network and partnerships for addressing challenges related to Water Security and Climate Change. The convention will explore vast opportunities in developing technically viable and economically feasible solutions for sustainable governance and management of water resources.

Through its research, TERI has made significant contribution to the international climate debate, especially from the perspective of a developing country wherein efficient use of natural resources and protection of the environment are seen as essential prerequisites for economic welfare. TERI is the Regional Knowledge Hub for Water and Climate Change adaptation in South Asia, endorsed by Asia Pacific Water Forum (APWF) and supported by PUB Singapore, UNESCO-Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). A Conference on "Rural Labourers in Neo-liberal India" 18-19 December 2010

At XIMB (Xavier Institute of Management – Bhubaneswar), Orissa, India

Organized by York University, Toronto, Canada and XIMB, Orissa, India, with the financial support of Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada

Also supported by Dialectical Anthropology (New York)

Rural labourers live in the most precarious conditions, especially in imperialized, poorer countries such as India. They suffer from economic exploitation, which is often carried out through, or coexists with, gender- and caste-based oppression. They are also subjected to relative neglect on the part of the state. The conditions of this class therefore cry out for serious critical scrutiny. The conference aims to bring together scholars who will explore multiple dimensions of the lives of rural labour from a critical perspective. More details are available at the conference website, Abstracts of papers (maximum 200 words) should be submitted online. Review of abstracts would start on 1st October; so, those received after 30th September would be considered only if space is still left. Completed papers must reach us by 5 December 2010. All participants, including those presenting papers in the conference, must register on-line by 10th December through the above-mentioned website. Registration is free but does not include food or folders. Some or all paper presenters would be offered a Rs.200 Room & Board package or/and financial support towards travel. Enquiries can be sent to

of Student-Athletes
September 23, 1:00-2:30pm EDT
online webinar
Host: Innovative Educators

NOTE: Payment is not required prior to event
date. The recording is included in the
registration fee and is accessible for one full

Intercollegiate athletics enables students to
develop a wide range of skills that can support
their success in college, in their careers, and
in life. However, many student-athletes also
need guidance to help them balance the demands
of their academic and athletic lives.

This 90-minute webinar will consider individual
and institutional initiatives that can support
learning, development and persistence for
student-athletes  It will examine issues that
impede and enhance the academic success of
student-athletes. It will provide concrete,
tangible strategies that can enable educators to
motivate and support student-athletes to take
greater responsibility for their own learning,
development, and persistence. This session
will  provide information on the key elements of
a successful academic support structure and
provide resources for institutions seeking to
implement or enhance programs to serve student-
athletes. The webinar will also review the
FLAG/GRO model developed by the NCAA to examine
the level of academic risk of incoming and
continuing student-athletes. The model is a
tool that can be used to anticipate and
respond proactively to the needs of any at-risk
student population.

1. The role of intercollegiate athletics in
enhancing institutional visibility and

2. The characteristics of student-athletes,
their strengths and challenges.

3. The definition and nature of at-risk as
presented by the NCAA working group.

4. How existing programs and services might
be coordinated to support student-athletes, as
well as a model for structuring and staffing
distinct student-athlete support units.

5. The purposes, components and structure of
the NCAA FLAG/GRO model and consideration of the
principles of student success and persistence as
these relate to the FLAG Program and to the
enhancement of student development and graduation.

6. How the NCAA FLAG/GRO Program can be
applied to the work of academic advising and
academic counseling units and other programs and
departments across the campus.

7. The role of the National Association of
Academic Advisors for Athletes (N4A) in
supporting those working to enhance the success
of student-athletes.
