Search for DG --- Jobs

THE PRESIDENT and Governing Body of the NCAER (the Council) have appointed a search committee to
identify a candidate for the position of Director-General (DG) when the incumbent's term ends later this year.
The DG is the Chief Executive of the Council and is an ex-officio member of its Governing Body. The Council
is an independent, not-for-profit institution founded in 1956. Throughout its existence it has been dedicated
to objective, non-partisan documentation and analysis of policy and implementation issues in India's growth
and development. Further details are available from the Council's website www.ncaer.org. While NCAER
has traditionally achieved its impact through written reports for a broad range of sponsors, a recent major
grant from the (Hewlett-Gates-IDRC-DFID supported) Think Tank Initiative is designed to assist the organisation
in participating and initiating domestic and global policy debates. Equally, NCAER aspires to strengthen its
standing as one of the leading centres of applied research on development in Asia. NCAER already enjoys
extensive links with scholars and research organisations globally. These links are expected to expand
dramatically over the coming decade.
THE IDEAL APPLICANT would need to demonstrate intellectual grasp of major issues in economic development
so as to provide strategic guidance to the work programme. This could either be through a distinguished
career in teaching, research and publication with an emphasis on empirical analysis of policy issues, or
through practical experience in a policy setting with demonstrated interest in analysis and publication. An
interest in policy issues and policy impact is essential. This substantive experience should be complemented
with demonstrated capacity for delegated management and leadership appropriate for an organisation with
a head-count in excess of 100 persons. The job also requires excellent communication, representational and
networking skills, in public speaking and presentations locally and internationally, as well as in fund-raising.
The appointment is contractual for an initial period not to exceed five years, subject to renewal by mutual
agreement. A compensation package competitive with similar institutions in India will be offered, commensurate
with qualifications and experience. Applications/nominations may be emailed to searchcommittee@ncaer.org
no later than August 15, 2010. While receipt of applications would be acknowledged, only short-listed candidates
would be contacted thereafter. The Search Committee reserves the right to fill the vacancy by invitation.

International Conference on Challenges to Inclusive Growth in the Emerging Economies”]

*STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT FORUM OF INDIA in association with INDIAN INSTITUTE OF
MANAGEMENT, AHMEDABAD (IIM-A) Announces INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on
"Challenges to Inclusive Growth in the Emerging Economies" *

The International Conference of Strategic Management Forum featuring 3 major
components:

  - Invited talks and panel discussion by well known Academicians from
  India and abroad
  - Invited talks and panel discussion by Senior Corporate Leaders and
  Executives
  - Presentation of the Research papers and Case studies on the Conference
theme by the scholars from India and abroad.

Unprecedented growth has been experienced in most part of the globe during
last few decades. Unfortunately, the fruit of such growth has not improved
the life for all. While the poverty has been reduced in some of the emerging
economies like India, China and Vietnam, half of the world's population owns
less than 1% of the wealth. More than half of total workforce of 2.6 billion
in the developing economies is employed in the "informal sector" with
unfavourable working conditions. Unemployment, especially of youths, is in
the range of 40 to 70%. With close to 1 billion people suffering from
malnourishment, 2.7 billion people living without proper sanitation and
clean water, around 125 million children not going to school and around 30
million children dying of preventable diseases in last 10 years before
reaching the age of five; do clearly indicate that a large part of the
population have been deprived of the opportunities in sharing the fruits of
the growth.

The situation is surely unsustainable. The great and immediate challenge of
the current century is to generate inclusive and sustainable growth.

The poor lack money, safety, food, health, and living conditions with basic
dignity. They don't have access to information, credit, skills and networks,
which could improve their personal, economical and social well-being. The
demographic dividend enjoyed by countries like India and China would lead to
prosperity only when available additional workforce is educated and
productively employed. In absence of that, social unrest and instability can
be expected.

In order to create a better and sustainable future, Governments, Corporates
and NGOs will need to work collectively and playing their respective roles
most effectively. Organisations will also be required to innovate in several
areas in order to offer products and services at affordable price range, to
a large size market segment.

From this perspective, Strategic Management Forum is organizing the
international conference on "Challenges to Inclusive Growth in the Emerging
Economies" Research papers and cases are invited on the following sub-themes
of the conference:

  - Public Policy Reforms for providing food, shelter, health and education
  - Education and skill development for empowerment
  - ICT Deployment for Rural Development & e-governance
  - Creating employment opportunities for economically weak and physically
  challenged citizens
  - Affordable products and services offerings through innovation
  - Role of NGOs/SHGs towards empowerment
  - Micro Finance and DFI initiatives
  - Development of Infrastructure for rural upliftment creating new
  opportunities
  - Is "Inclusive Growth" an issue of concern and relevance for developed
  economies as well?

Conference

CONFERENCE
Shri Ram College of Commerce (University of Delhi)
Conference on "Issues in International Trade during Globalisation Era" from 19th to 20th November, 2010, at
Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi.
Globalisation has led to very rapid integration of countries across the globe in terms of flows of commodities as well as finance.
The value of global exports first exceeded US$ 1 trillion in 1977 and by 2008 it reached more than US$ 16 trillion. The global
trade in merchandise, which included exports and imports, as percentage of global GDP surged from 18 percent in 1977 to
51 percent in 2008. Such dramatic rise has been observed after the enactment of the WTO rules, which stresses on various
types of tariff reduction measures, removal of quantitative restrictions on imports, and various fiscal and monetary policies
measures to promote the international trade. But, as expected it has given more edge to the developed countries who have
been major beneficiaries from such trade expansion. As per the WTO data for 2008, developed countries constituted 63 percent
of global exports while developing countries constituted 33 percent and rest is by least developed countries. In the light of
such facts Shri Ram College of Commerce is going to organise conference to invite high quality research papers which deal
with different dimensions of international trade particularly about the experience of developing countries with international trade.
Papers should be either theoretical or empirical in nature dealing with international trade or regional trade. Broad themes for
Papers are the following: (1) Theoretical debates on international trade, (2) Assessment of the dominant international trade
theories in the era of globalisation, (3) Trade related regulations and their impact on international trade, (4) Performance of
regional trade organisations, (5) Challenges of management of international trade in new macroeconomic environment,
(6) pattern of trade in goods and services, (7) International trade and economic development, (8) Financing of exports
and imports.
Selection of the received papers will be subject to the screening by selection committee. The authors of the selected papers
coming from Indian destination will be provided T.A. and free accommodation as per the UGC norms. Due to limited fund the
foreign authors of the selected papers will have to make arrangements on their own for their travel expenses, while the lodging
will be made available by the college free of cost. The last date of submission of abstract is 15th August, 2010. The last date
of submission of completed paper is 30th September, 2010. The date of confirmation to the selected authors is 20th October,
2010. Abstracts and papers can be sent electronically at srccseminar@gmail.com. For further details contact Mr. H.N. Tiwari

Winter School

Announcing Winter School on
LIFE AND THOUGHT OF GANDHI
Over the last three decades the scholastic, intellectual, political and social interests in Gandhiji's life and thought has acquired a new urgency
and depth. Gandhiji's writings like An Autobiography or The Story of My Experiments with Truth and Hind Swaraj have been subject of
minute textual, philosophical and literary studies. The theory and practice of Satyagraha, constructive work and the institutions that Gandhiji
established have come to be studied by historians, political theorists and commentators and chroniclers of social movements. Lives of
Gandhiji's associates and interlocutors like Mahadev Desai, J C Kumarrapa, Mirabehn, C F Andrews and Lanza Del Vasto have added to
our understanding of Gandhiji. As a result of these studies our understanding of Gandhiana has emerged deeper, richer and nuanced.
The Winter School seeks to acquaint the participant to this variegated intellectual tradition of thinking of and about Gandhiji. The School
would seek to provide a non-fragmentary understanding of Gandhiji's life and thought. Quite often we have come to look at political Gandhi
as quite distinct from the Gandhi of the constructive work or see Gandhiji's spiritual quest as distinct from his quest for Swaraj. The School
would try to unravel the underlying relationship between seemingly disparate practices, utterances and writings. With this in view a Two
week Winter School is proposed to be held at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla during 1-15 December 2010.
The Winter School will be conducted by various eminent scholars from several disciplines who will explore various aspects of Gandhi's
life and thought.
Applications are invited from young College and University teachers/researchers from Humanities and Social Sciences/Journalist/NGO
activist in the age group of 22 to 35 years.
A batch of 25 participants will be selected from amongst the applicants. Those interested may send their bio-data (that should include
their academic qualification, experience, research interest and area of specialization) along with the note of 200-250 words regarding
how they perceive life and thought of Gandhi.
All expenses will be borne by the IIAS. Applications for the above programme should reach IIAS on or before 31 August 2010. Those
selected will be informed by 15th September 2010.

Call for Papers

Call for papers- Arborvitae -  November 2010 special issue on forestry and gender

Arborvitae is the official newsletter of the IUCN Forest Conservation Programme (FCP). The mission of FCP is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve biological diversity in forests and tree-dominated landscapes and ensure that the use of forest resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The newsletter Arborvitae follows this mission, and covers the most important issues currently affecting how forest resources are used and governed. You can view previous issues at www.iucn.org/forest/av

The November 2010 issue of Arbovitae (published by IUCN) will focus on forestry and gender issues. The objective of this publication will be to provide information that will  improve forestry practices through gender mainstreaming.
For this issue we request articles from researchers, development policymakers, practitioners, and activists from both, the forestry and the gender studies sector. We are interested in articles that focus on:
  • How do men and women contribute differently to the forestry sector?
  • Why gender mainstreaming is needed in the forestry sector? And which particular areas in the forestry sector could benefit from this gender mainstreaming?
  • What international/national initiatives or efforts are being carried out to ensure that gender issues are integrated into forestry agendas?
  • What lessons have we learn from case studies where gender has been mainstreamed into forestry projects?
  • What insights do we now have on the effect that gender mainstreaming might have on mitigation initiatives related to climate change (particularly REDD)?
  • What governance issues should be addressed within the forestry sector in order to warranty equality between men and women?

If you are interested in writing an article for this issue based on these topics, or have another idea that might relate to these topics, please send an abstract outlining your proposed idea to lorena.aguilar@iucn.org as soon as possible, and before the commissioning deadline: 1 of September, 2010.  The size of the article should be of 500 words.
Commissioned articles will need to be completed for a deadline of  1 October 2010.
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
