CALL FOR PAPERS
CRIME AND VIOLENCE IN LATIN AMERICA
InterAmerican Conference on Social Security (CISS)
Mexico City, Mexico – October 1st, 2010

Persistently high crime rates and violence in Latin America have made it the top
concern for most of the region's population. Policy intervention has generally been
ineffective in bringing down the rates of homicide and other crimes in most cities, and
represents one of the most complex issues facing policymakers today. Research efforts
in this topic are increasing in the region and the CISS, with the support of the UNDP
and the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) is hosting a conference to bring
together academics working in this field.

Selected papers (approximately 8) will be invited to the conference to be held in Mexico
City on October 1st, 2010. Economy‐class plane tickets and expenses will be covered
for participants (one per paper). Some authors may be invited to publish their papers
in a special issue of Well Being and Social Policy, the journal edited by the CISS and the
Universidad Iberoamericana.
Papers should be sent to Daniel Ortega (dortega@caf.com) no later than July 15,
2010. Decisions will be announced by August 13th 2010.

IIPM Seminar

The IIPM Think Tank, an independent, India-centric research body, is
inspired by Dr. M.K. Chaudhuri's vision of India as an economic powerhouse
in the 21st century; a modern nation state where poverty becomes history and
the underprivileged are not consigned to the dustbin of amnesia. Wholly free
of ideology, we look at the Indian developmental paradigms, purely modeled
upon the basis of 'objective reality' and passionately believe in the credo
that we constantly seek to follow: rethink, edify and delineate. This
enduring commitment has helped us foster and broaden the parameters of
public policy debate and alternatives. IER is then an attempt to instigate a
debate in our system and then to come up with a new paradigm, a new roadmap
and most importantly a new mindset for the path of development.

IER is editorially independent of IIPM and is not peer reviewed. It offers
seminal and contemporary ideas to its discernible readers and claims a wide
and high ranking readership and as well enjoys the reverence of academics,
policy makers and development activists.

The upcoming quarterly issue is due for release in the month of May
2010, wherein
the focal intent of this issue us to portray an all-inclusive, up-to-date
and lucid exposition of an array of socio-economic and political issues and
concerns that are of paramount importance for appreciating, evaluating, and
suggesting solutions to the present Indian economy. Toward
that goal, we strive to achieve greater involvement of the intelligent and
concerned change agents and thought leaders in questions of policy and the
ideation.

In a quest to attain these objectives, we resort to formulate a common
minimum agenda, and we consider that this will be achievable, if we receive
a write-up from you (not exceeding 3000-3500 words), on the topic *"INCLUSIVE
INDIA: DOES MARKET OFFER A SOLUTIONS FOR GROWTH?**" *or on any other topic
of your expertise and interest <which will be published in the non-thematic
section >, delineating the possible alternatives and options, on or before
15th
May 2010. We can arrive at a mutually convenient deadline for your write-ups
and take this initiative forward subsequently. In case you are unable to
write, kindly depute someone from your esteemed organization to participate
in this. For any more clarification, please feel free to mail me at
m.chaitanya@iipm.edu or alternatively at +91 9177603777.

MCPH Course wanted young faculties and students

Uniqueness of the MCPH course:

·         No such course in India so far

·         The only course in India (perhaps the world) which will bring together philosophy, social sciences and the arts

·         The only course which will draw upon both Indian and western intellectual traditions in all the courses

·         The only course which will have semester long courses on 'reading and writing' and on critical and creative thinking

·         Serious training at the MA level to write a thesis (of about 50 to 60 pages) in the fourth semester

·         Presence of international students adds a different dimension to this course

·         The subjects will be theme based and not discipline based

We have also managed to get a very subsidized fee for this course. We want to restrict the number of students we take. The students who finish our course can go on to higher studies in any discipline in social sciences and humanities. They will also be well trained in thinking and writing, which will help them if they take up work in NGOs or elsewhere. Not to forget - they can always do the Services exam!

So please pass on the word. All the details of the course will be put on the websitewww.manipal.edu in a week or so. Until then, you can spread the word and encourage those who want to really do a great course to apply to us. Staying in Manipal is also fun - it is close to the sea and to the western ghats. Please ask interested students to write tooffice.mcph@manipal.edu for more information.

I would also need your help in finding good faculty - basically young PhDs who want to be part of an exciting new initiative. Please let me know if you know of such people.

The Course Setting
The Internet has become a great and veritable source of information on a variety of topics. The quantity of

increasingly becoming sophisticated and faster. In the context, the purpose of this short duration course is
to take students by hand through the various logical steps in doing a typical applied development project
and then acquaint them with Internet resources that can make these steps much more easy and rich. In fact,
this is a thoroughly revised and updated version of an earlier course titled, Using Internet for Social Science
Research. The current version is broadened to include a wide variety of disciplines under a variety of
settings such as the academia, industry, government and the NGO sectors- in fact in any walk of life, which
